    Is anyone else like this?

I find it hard to rewatch or reread anything, simply because my mind siezes upon every available detail like a pitbull and doesn't let go for months or years. I may watch movies on TV that I've seen theatrically, I reread The Lord Of The Rings a lot in my youth, and I'm trying to reread The...

    Crazy/cool names of real-world places

Let's see... I don't think anyone's mentioned Y in France. That's just peculiar. Nullarbor, Australia - it sounds like an aboriginal word (to foreigners like me who don't know much about aboriginal languages), but is actually Latin for 'no trees'. I think it's the most beautifully suitable name...

    A Personal/Professional Announcement

And it's got a few pictures in it, too... Do let this fellow know what you think of the product. Hopefully there's more work ahead for illustrators in this setting (ahem, ahem). (And an announcement in the d20 Publishing forum might draw more attention.)

    What comics are you collecting/reading?

I'm currently picking up: Supreme Power Sojourn - because I admire the artistic merit. I've got to start taking notes... Tales of the Vampires - because I've been collecting Buffy comics since #1, back when they sold better than Superman. and in theory, Rising Stars - JMS's first comics foray...

What aspects of D&D magic do you like?

Fire and forget: Change. Spell slots: Keep. Specific effects: Keep. Spell components: Change. Arcane/divine distinction: Change. Spell failure: Change. Unique spell lists: Change. The coolest things about 3e in this context are multiclassing, feats, and the new casting options it introduced...

RPGs "reduce accountability and substite raw power for legitimate authority"

Frankly, this might be one of those situations where 'parental accountability' (used in a distant and bizarre fashion) is needed. Might. If we're talking about Death Row, I'd be very, very careful about exciting the inmates. If we're talking minimum security white-collar crime, then I'd be happy...

    SkyCaptain: Thumbs up, or down?

I've got nothing against Jolie, and everything for cool aerial stunts in the Crimson Skies vein, so I'm thumbing up at this movie we've seen almost nothing of.

    The Holy Grail

The idea that the quest for the Grail leads to something much bigger and freakier in The Archives is suddenly appealing to me... ("Oh my God, they cloned Jesus from samples of the Shroud of Turin and brainwashed him into being a government agent!" Nah, I'd just deus ex machina (sic) him into a...

    Honor Harrington RPG setting!

I guess it depends on what you're looking for in a book. I read Honor Harrington primarily for the space battles and nice big numbers, and Miles Vorkosigan for the audacious little - um, the social element. And I go away happy.

    Honor Harrington RPG setting!

'Will'? 'Do'. If you ask me.

Do you want to play a non-PHB character?

Might at some point. But only if it were interesting, insofar as I'd only do something if it were interesting. Of course, I'm quite happy just making stuff up if it's cool - if you've read my webcomic you'll see what I did to the party just with one PHB and a 2nd ed Monster Manual, and that's...

    Honor Harrington RPG setting!

Well then, go to http://www.baen.com and download David Weber's On Basilisk Station (book 1 in the series). The publisher wants you to. In slightly more detail, the Honor Harrington series is often described as 'Hornblower in space'. It's about an interstellar war that resembles Star Trek only...

What are the "Classic" Fantasy novels?

All Tolkein. Duh. I think that the following are probably pretty important too (not books, series; does anyone write standalones these days?): Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time. Say what you will about it, people will nevertheless say it. David and Leigh Eddings' Belgariad, etc. Drawing on myth...

    Van Helsing Trailer

It doesn't look too bad, for a movie about monsters and stuff. And I agree, it's just possible that we haven't seen the good stuff. There are few 'look at me, I'm awe-inspiring' shots of monsters in the trailer, mostly 'look at me I'm doing something' shots. I suppose we'll see, though.

    Underdark Ecology

The big problem with fungi is, as stated, biomass. You can't expect to have a couple of pads of fungus in a cavern and have that support an entire ecosystem. What you need is a more surface-style ecology. That is to say, most of the caverns are choked with fungi, and rock is rarely seen. In...

What would be fair pay for an artist on a PDF project?

Assuming you can sell enough to pay the artist off in the first year or so, then that doesn't sound too bad. The percentage is nice if the project doesn't really get off the ground, the total is very nice too. Upon consideration, I probably wouldn't mind using such a scheme.

    Simon R Green

I just got done reading Drinking Midnight Wine, and for some reason I think it's amongst Green's better work (having read nearly everything else he's done, including the first book of the second Deathstalker cycle). It's certainly less complex, shorter, easily managed, but it's not stoopid at...

[Trailer] Hey this looks great! Sky Captain and...

Studies show that New Zealand leather and related products are of preeminent quality for aviators. (I read it in National Geographic, probably from 20 years ago, but the greenies can't have retarded our biotech advancement that much that we'd drop behind in such a short time.) So there you go...

Comedy and Humor in RPG Books

I reckon a few are OK. Mutant sea bass in the DMG, for example. That's the kind of thing that livens up text. RPGs are entertainment first and foremost, after all, and a little humour can help you understand the rules. On the other hand, too much can swamp flavour and setting aside. Flavour...

What would be fair pay for an artist on a PDF project?

As an artist who works on PDF products (personal experiences; other people may vary): The first three options tend to be most common. A free copy is considered de rigeur; no matter how little effort a contributer has put in, they should get to see their work. I did 2 monsters, 1800 words, for...
