I run a campaign similar to this, but the human-elf conflict is in the background. My PC's (and probably yours) will not willingly fight Elves. It makes for some good tension in parts when the PC's are exposed to it.

Sure a Human or Elf can have a Half-elven parent. Say a Half Elf marries a Human girl and have children, according to game rules they would be pure human. Yet they would have some half-elven/elven genetics.

What about creating 'Return to the lair of the fire giant king' from the original G3? The new King can be Snurreson from the module Lord of the Iron Fortress. That way you get an easily customizable dungeon and a link to another good module.
