    DM / Player problems

Except my sulky childish player is nearly 60 years old... "What do you mean I can't cast Dominate Animal?" "You can't see the animal. It's dark in there." "But I know it's there. I can hear it. It will work." "You can't target a spell at a creature unless you can see it." "It says I...

    Evil: individuals or entire nations?

I've been thinking about the nature of "Evil" in D&D, and it seems that there's several ways of including it in a campaign. One way is to have Bad Guys out there whom the heroes must track down and eliminate. Another is to have entire nations devoted to evil in conflict with the good...

What is your favorite D&D setting?

Hadn't heard that. I do know that to qualify as "official" every single word they write for the KoK setting has to be approved by WoTC before it's allowed to be published.

Morality in your D&D - b&w or gray?

Black and white for purposes of determining alignment. However, each religion has its own list of virtues and desirable traits. Following those - doing the "right" or "good" thing in the eyes of that diety - doesn't necessarily mean the character is doing the "right" or "good" thing in terms...

What is your favorite D&D setting?

Kalamar. And why would somebody argue that it's not D&D? It would take a hell of a lot of conversion to play any other system in it.

Learning to DM - Adventures/Modules to help

Oh, it wasn't THAT bad. OK, sure it was poorly edited (monsters were described as having one weapon, and the stat block in the back had another, for instance), the plot was strange and inconsistent, the encounters ranged from simplistically easy to TPK if played correctly.... OK, maybe...

Domain Spells and Wand Activated Spells

Have fun with your wand, but good luck finding a divine scroll of Enlarge person! Those things gotta be rare...

Rat Bastards! Help with elemental swarm!

What, your dungeon was carved out of stone in the ground, not a maze of Walls of Force on the Negative Energy Plane? What kind of cakewalks are they sending 17+ level characters on these days? :p

    Fireball vs. Wind Wall

I would agree with this. I see no reason to believe that the "bead" is a solid object. Though not entirely flavor text, I don't think the "bead" is meant to follow any of the rules for missiles.

    D&D 3.x Enchanted Ranged Weapons in 3.5

Well, it can still be fun having a +5 bow and +1 flaming holy arrows...

    Do you use dungeons?

My players were thinking exploring empty rooms was getting boring. Then they discovered that one of the "empty" rooms used to be used by a construct-crafter, and the furnature was all animated objects. Now they're much more on their toes. :D To be fair, though, only about 1/4 of the rooms were...

So when does the new server get hooked up?

Shame about the video card. But it can still HOST online games, right? ;)

Getting hit with a bowl of soup

Croutons might be a bit munchkin, but it depends on your group. Do you think they can handle the additional power? I've heard of campaigns collapsing because too many croutons were given to the players too quickly.

The top change 3e made to the D&D spell system...

I think the new saving throw system really impacted the spell system.

How Does Temporary Hit Points Stack?

I was told in a different thread that you can't dispel temporary hit points that are granted as the result of a spell any more than you can dispel the hit points gained when you are affected by a healing spell.

It begins, Castle Zagyg, the most famed of all dungeons

Heh. "Big Fish Lake" didn't bother me. Sounds like a good name describing what's in it. "Long Forest" bothered me. It always seems like the designer is running out of names when they have to resort to using names based on how the feature looks on their map.

How Does Temporary Hit Points Stack?

There seems to be some division on the concept of stacking temporary hit points. Some people think False Life is the greatest spell, since you can cast it several times and get a huge sum of temporary hit points, while others insist it wouldn't stack. But it seems clear to me that if you're...

    Spell Penetration is kinda bla

I just noticed that one of the 2nd level wizard/sorcerer spells in the Kingdoms of Kalamar Player's Handbook grants spell resistence 10+caster level (for 1 round per level). The only catch is that the spell ends if a single spell penetrates the resistence. I just allowed unequivically all...

    the FLGS list

The primary one in Albuquerque is Active Imagination. It's a nice place, and stocks the usual d20 and collectable card game stuff. It also has a surprising amount of random stuff from other systems, lots of obscure board games, and a huge bumper sticker collection. For some reason, one entire...

    Do you use dungeons?

I was going to say that I prefer small, but then I realized that what I really prefer is quick playing dungeons. I want dungeons that will take, at most, two sessions to complete. Currently I have my players going through a 30-room dungeon, but it's a former brigand base built into the back of a...
