What would the hardness and hitpoints of a 12-foot diameter spherical boulder be?

Solid granite weighs 161 pounds per cubic foot. A sphere 12' in diameter contains 452.376 cubic feet of granite, and weighs 72832.536 pounds, or 36.41 tons. It's gonna have a LOT of hit points, espicially if you factor in the fact that in this case the participants don't simply have to break...

Why is Aid a 2nd level spell?

I have honestly never seen it cast. I gave my players a few potions of Aid and they sold them. A Bless spell is only 1st level and give the whole party, potentially a great number of people, the +1 morale bonus to hit. And any PC I know would much rather be hit with a Cure Serious spell if he...

    A Couple of Questions

I generally consider somebody to gain levels as they age, gaining "roleplaying" or "story" xp throughout their lives. When a Commoner/Expert/Aristocrat reaches adulthood, they are 1st level. When they reach Venerable age (for their race) they have reached 10th level. They have to have done...

    Deflect Arrows feat DC

You could make it work like other feats, and say the monk has to declare a penalty to his attacks to gain an equivelent bonus to his AC versus ranged attacks...

What has been your experience with survival-focused adventures?

I found a random weather generator and pre-generated a whole year of weather for my campaign world. If they get caught in a snowstorm or avalanche, it's just their tough luck and they'll have to deal with it. Ditto for traveling in winter. When the temperature is below freezing, even without...

Using Charm Person spells on PC's, like to hear your thoughts...

A PC who's charmed is a kind of fun situation. If a battle is going on, as far as they're concerned two groups of trusted friends are trying to kill each other. In one game I DMed the dwarven barbarian was charmed, saw all of her friends going at it, and came to the conclusion that we were...

    Orange Ioun Stones

I'd let a character have multiple such stones, but each one would have to be affecting a different spellcasting class in which they have a level.

do you know what you just saved against?

I had some PCs "feel a tingle" and some of them "collapse to the ground" during our first (and last) bodak encounter. Amazingly, none of the players even knew what a bodak was. They were absolutely horrified when they found out what those "tingles" actually represented.

    A Couple of Questions

1: DM fiat. I don't think there are rules saying that being hit by ammo increases your load, but when the ammo specifically says it stays in your body until removed... 2: Yes, it is metagaming. But the PCs shouldn't know how well the NPC rolled, or what his bonus was. The DM should have just...

MerakSpielman's Story Hour (A Kingdoms of Kalamar campaign)

And so they trekked, with the wagon slowing them down a bit, for several days. Then they were ambushed by mounted brigands, to the delight of Astoria, who got to do some fighting on horseback. After the short, bloody battle, they tossed the 2 brigands who were still alive into their slave...

What is the best software for creating quick NPCs?

I want one too. The best combo was the NPC generator plus the equipment generator, but then I had to manually change the weapons to match the NPCs feat choices, and a few other changes... I'd really like a program that could do this intelligently. And Etools "generator" just pops out the...

what do you call the son of a duke?

Funny, I was thinking of calling him a "Dukling."

Is a moving ship a destination or an object?

But what does it mean to know the exact location? Do they use longitude and latitude in your campaign? Scrying works to teleport to a location - but how? If you scry an enemy, and see him in a paticular room, you can teleport to that room without having any idea where the room itself is...

Do You Like Advanced Monsters and Prestige Class Examples in your Books?

What's really fun is NON-intelligent monsters with classes. Want a tougher giant scorpion? Say it has been through many fights and loses its temper when exposed to pain - i.e., add barbarian levels. Perhaps the Stirges in the Dark Woods are particularly nasty and have evolved to strike with...

    When to Call it Quits

As a gamer who's married with kids, I feel sympathy for you. Luckily for me, my wife is into D&D too, so we came up with a solution. We advertised as a family-friendly, kids of all ages welcome group. Now we're a group composed primarily of married couples who bring their kids with them. We...

Is a moving ship a destination or an object?

Another fun question is if you're in a fast ship moving with a stiff breeze at 60' per round, and you're below decks and cast Fly, what happens? :D Don't bother thinking about it. None of the rationalles for this situation really make any sense anyway.

Do You Like Advanced Monsters and Prestige Class Examples in your Books?

I like the advanced monsters, but given time I'd rather make up my own. I actually LIKE adding class levels and rolling stats for really nasty foes. It's a fun exercise.

Is a moving ship a destination or an object?

I'd rule that a specific location on the ship (i.e., a particular cabin) would count as a location, whereas the ship itself, as a whole entity, would count as an object.

Can Wizards Write Down Spells They Can't Cast?

From the SRD: I see nothing preventing it. Which seems a bit strange. The spellcraft DC is tougher (because a lower level wizard hasn't put as many ranks into it as a higher level wizard), so a 1st level wizard trying to scribe a 9th level spell would have a hard time.

    False Life (Necro Spell)

Of course, if you cast several False Life's on yourself, take more than your original HP in damage, and then have the misfortune to have somebody Dispel them... Though the weird temporary hp stacking rules don't allow it, I think this might be a fun thing to allow anyway. Lord knows...
