D&D 5E (2014) First Strike: Initiative in Next

Hmmm... Just throwing this out there, but what about using a the normal everyone rolls for the first round, and every round there after you get 10+initiative bonus to determine initiative order. Could bring back calling out actions at the start of a round with this method too. At the beginning...

    Something Awful leak.

I would really like to see the numbers on this for other areas. The various meetups in my location are relatively equally diverse. There are about 3 regular Pathfinder groups, 3 4e groups, 4 3.5 groups, 3 2e groups, and 5 BECMI/OSR groups. I think the biggest issue from the above meetup...

    Something Awful leak.

I have been pinging back and forth between both sides of this argument, I can see wisdom in both directions. But this doesn't necessitate becoming irrate. I find it is usually more productive to assume you don't have enough facts rather than assuming someone else is an idiot. It pushes you to...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e: Stat the Lady of Pain...so we can overthrow her

Argh... Don't let the planescape gravey drip onto my mashed forgotten realms! :p

D&D 5E (2014) 5e: Stat the Lady of Pain...so we can overthrow her

Although I do share much of your opinion on this, I have no idea whether or not those stats have been put to use. I agree that having the pages devoted to other aspects of religion would see more use from me too. Gods are not singular bodied entities in my stories, and PCs mostly focus on taking...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e: Stat the Lady of Pain...so we can overthrow her

I completely read you on this point and what you described definitely makes for quite a boring story regardless if its a mighty god or a lowly kobold the PCs are engaging. Most adventuring stories would be TPKs straight off the bat if the DM was half as concerned for the welfare of the monsters...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e: Stat the Lady of Pain...so we can overthrow her

Ultimately, though, doesn't this sentiment ring true for an evil wizard or ruthless overlord... The DM would have to actually BE an evil wizard or ruthless overlord to accurately model their thought patterns and creative defenses. At every level the DM is just letting the overpowered characters...

    Alignment in D&DN...

Hehehe, by this definition, almost every predator might be a murderer, and nature would be filled to the brim with EVIL! Unless you are only talking about killing human's, then killing an elf might not be murder... Moralilty in a fantasy setting is awful tricksie. :)

    Alignment in D&DN...

I'm sure that you are not intentionally explaining it this way, but this is very cyclic logic. I feel like I'm sitting in a classroom being taught to teach teachers how to teach teachers to teach teachers how to teach teachers to teach. Morality guidelines and frameworks for maintaining morality...

    Alignment in D&DN...

Ah... 4e was closest to the original alignments that existed, prior to the 9 alignment breakout with AD&D, 2e, and 3e. Alignment in this case is not really a good veil for your clear dislike of 4e, there are other aspects you could choose to rally behind, but the alignment issue is not it. I...

    D&D 5E (2014) The math of D&D Next; a moderating proposal

Gah... I wasn't thinking about the heavily armored tank when I was thinking of high defense characters, more along the lines of the warrior with light or no armor but can move like the wind and dodge and evade attacks with lightning reflexes. But then, D&D always failed to accurately represent...

    Alignment in D&DN...

There has been too much skating on the edge of edition warring in this thread already. I have my issues with every edition, but I play them ALL and like them ALL. Those who are insinuating that if X sacred cow is not included in the core than 5e will fail like 4e are trying to make 5e become the...

    D&D 5E (2014) The math of D&D Next; a moderating proposal

While I do like simplifying the math even further, this still continues to enforce the strength is better than speed mentallity, which should NOT be so one sided. The post in this thread about attacks missing less because experienced combatants know when not to waste an attack is accurate, but...

    D&D 5E (2014) The math of D&D Next; a moderating proposal

Yes, this is on the money. If the math the OP is describing is based on PC advancement, not NPC/Creature advancement. I like the 50% mark for maximally optimized PC attacker versus a maximizally optimized PC defender. Keeping in mind that in order to achieve either extreme, they would have had...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should the +1 Sword Exist in 5E?

I know what you are driving at, but I must reiterate that it is awesomely simple to add +X items to your game if you desire them. There is nothing complex about +X items, no rules require changing in any way that we know of at this time. Just plop a +X in front of the name, and then add the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should the +1 Sword Exist in 5E?

This is one of the most horrible aspects of +X items... "oh looky... a new +2 Battleaxe, guess I can just chuck this here +1 in ye ole bag-o-stuff-to-sell since it's practically worthless now." I've been playing D&D since the late 80s and +X items were boring back then and just as boring now...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should the +1 Sword Exist in 5E?

+X items are ridiculously easy to add back in if anyone wants them... If WoTC doesn't put them in the game I won't mind at all, especially if they focus on magic items that do things that make them special instead (ex. ring of the ram, horn of blasting, wand of wonder) I would lean more towards...

Balance bwtween Class, Race, and Background

I also feel race should not advance with level, at least not very much. To me it seems too gamist if characters advance racially. How does a character's race change as the story develops? I could understand this logic for otherworldly races, but for standard human/demi-humans, this just...

Once, Twice, Three times a Daily

I love playing wizards but I do wish that spells were actually more vancian than they are now. If spells were lengthy and complex rituals that needed to be prepared ahead of time to have any hope of using them in combat. So a mage has to spend time preparing the spell (like the level squared *...

    Healing Without Surges

What I have been working on lately is adding bloodied/wounded system to my game. I have two sub scores below hit points: bloodied and wounded, both begin at 1/2 your hit points at level 1, but your armor's defense bonus is added to your wounded score. The wounded score improves by 1 point two...
