    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

Stunned. I do confess - it takes work - if the DM has already done their work! Put my quote in context please.

D&D General Matt Colville on adventure length

Nobody listens because they don't understand your logic. "I would quit playing the game of D&D if my character died," is not logical. Characters in books die. Do you stop reading them? To quote @Paul Farquhar Superheroes die? Do you stop watching the movies? Iron man dies. Black Widow dies...

D&D General Matt Colville on adventure length

I understand there are other stakes. But you are leaving out the context of this particular game we are talking about - D&D. The one where rules actually explain how you can die. And then the makers of the game spend an enormous amount of the book explaining combat. They even came up with a...

D&D General Matt Colville on adventure length

I just can't comprehend this. If there are no stakes, and your character can never die, what is even the point of combat and dice rolling. The entire game is built on success/failure with randomness intervening via dice. It seems impossible to have a success/success model. If you cannot die, why...

D&D General Matt Colville on adventure length

It's like the old Ninja Warrior show in Japan. No one ever made it, and once someone did, they made it harder. There is something comforting for some about seeing the effort. For others, they thought it was stupid. Those that thought it was stupid remade it. The American version is meant to be...

D&D General What Classes Would You Add to D&D?

The cook. All sorts of edibles that do neat tricks.

D&D 5E (2014) As a DM, how do you handle monster hit points?

Average. I will occasionally bump up a boss, especially if the group has been running through the encounters. But, it is always plotted in advance. These decisions are never spur of the moment.

D&D General How involved are your gods?

I think, like most, the gods directly come into play only during special moments like a near-death experience, a last plea for help, or as a quest giver. Their power can be seen everywhere. This is due to the game mechanics stating it. But in-person is rare.

D&D General Matt Colville on adventure length

I agree with Matt. I would add that the module created a template for us on how to world build, or at the least, gave us a preference on how we like world building to be setup. The module, in its purest form, gave us ways to build NPCs, encounters, and plot hooks. I would also note that for us...

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

Not come up with. Please stop insinuating that all DMs do is make stuff up on the spot. The last port my players were in I had: the ships that came in and out, their destinations and where they came from, the captains, a ship log for the important ship, the dockmaster's name (and personality and...

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

All of these are my point - they can negate a background's feature. They can also lead to new and interesting things. I can assure you, if a DM had a blockade built that negated this feature, they sure as heck had better made plot points, NPCs, and inciting incidents for the blockade as well.

Advice: One Session, Experienced Players, Basic Set, & The Keep

Yeah, I know it is not a single session experience. But my friend who gave it to me as a gift, well, he and I have very fond memories of playing it. And just as importantly, he wants to bring some new people into the fold to have that experience. Thank you for the advice. I definitely think...

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

Very little, if you accept the premise that the DM might say no. The port they might be in is very small, one boat a week. The last twenty ships that docked there might be nothing but lizard folk sailors peddling their swamp jewelry. That is what the others are saying. The world and the place...

Advice: One Session, Experienced Players, Basic Set, & The Keep

Hi Everyone, It has been a long, long time since I've run a game from the Basic Set box. This set was a gift, and my friend wants to get together to play the adventure contained within - The Keep on the Borderlands. This will be a single session (3 hours), and the players are all experienced...

D&D 5E (2014) GM: Who Do You Target? [READ OP BEFORE VOTING]

I say rogue. They benefit from the rogue's cover, and they get rid of the character that can do damage via long distance. The wizard, if they have some good saves, might do very little. And the fighter might have to spend their turn getting to them. In that turn, they can punish the rogue by...

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

I understand it's not extra work - for you. That is my point. You can insist someone DM just like you, so they don't have this issue. But the reality is there are many DM styles, and for some, it might prove extra work.

D&D 5E (2024) Comeliness and Representation in Recent DnD Art

Aesthetics, especially in art, are part of that diversity. The aesthetics of clothes in general is often an integral part of the inclusion of diverse people. In the end, it's not just about skin tone and weight.

You can also view it as the opposite - those that were policed are now kick-butt so much, that they are allowed to run around in whatever they see fit. Again, two-way street. As for practical use, flowing robes made of satin being worn during a fight where you are lighting things on fire seems...

D&D 5E (2024) Comeliness and Representation in Recent DnD Art

That is a great question. I can only speak from my experience, but running the high school's D&D club, most of the students pick one of three things: A replica of their favorite anime or cartoon character Something outlandish, like I want to be a starfish like on Spongebob Something they are...

D&D 5E (2024) Comeliness and Representation in Recent DnD Art

Chainmail bikinis are an aesthetic. A type that some players don't mind. I always find it weird when someone argues for inclusiveness, and then turns around and says - "Except for this." Chainmail bikinis can represent an aesthetic, just like the shirtless warrior with his butt poking out of his...
