Core Rule Books Only - What system would you play?

Off hand, I would pick Pathfinder and Mutants and Masterminds as my top two choices with Pathfinder being first. GURPS would be first, but I use too many secondary books for that to be an option in the topic.

In case you didn't know: The WotC community is FREE

Tin Foil hats aside, I wonder what both Palladium and Kenzer Co, ala the Knights of the Dinner Table would say about it. Sure, lots of the fluff posts are paranoia, but the legit cases are present.

In case you didn't know: The WotC community is FREE

The last part of section 1, you mean. Agreed, it is the usual disclaimer, but I would love to see WOTC try and defend that one in court. They claim usage Rights and deny liability for content*. Just from my stint as a legal paperwork shuffler, I know a few judges that would love to see that one...

In case you didn't know: The WotC community is FREE

*recalls bomb threats from love-sick teen and terrorist messages on own board from various people* WOTC is actually pretty brave to claim ownership of content. :uhoh:

What Science Fiction Games are being played these days?

I am doing a Bolo themed game around the Eclipse Phase engine. It is mostly email based with military players. But, the system plays very well. The license model and free PDF is part of the thing that makes it work for my group - some of my players are literally in the middle of a warzone and...

3E & 4E Love and Hate Polls - What does it mean?

Trends in the existing social networks do not always match the trends for the emerging markets. The poll data is valid as a direct reflection of En World on that level. You could argue that the poll data and drift of most poll data indicates a general trend on the Internet - the publishers are...

Have you (and to what extent) designed your own RPG?

Completed and Unpublished Sci-fi tactical movement with RP based leveling for the story fans - the basic premise is that earth is under the heels of an alien race. The remnants of human society are nomadic drifters and seek to retake earth from the alien race holding it. Trouble is, the aliens...

    Oots #692

Love that last box - I know at least one campaign that could use fewer panels.

Were the 80s really the Golden Age of D&D?

As the publishers lose interest, the RP communities in general seem to make the conversion from players to "diehards that will keep the system alive" for each system as part of the sub-culture from that peer group. I submit that is the likely cause for the birth of "Golden Age" mentality among...

    Wotc takes on ... Optimization?!?

Humor books are fun for gifts - it might have that going for it.

Were the 80s really the Golden Age of D&D?

A good summary - I think the only other thing that you could add is the transition from actual game system to icon status correlates to the lack of interest from the publisher.

Pathfinder 1E Whinge about Pathfinder RPG availabilty

Just to bump this, I thought you might find it good to know that the "blip" has more orders for Pathfinder than some of the other systems at my local FLGS in Virginia Beach according to the owner/fellow DND geek. I managed to get a hold of the monster guide from what the had in stock, but the...

4E - 18 Months Later: Love it or hate it?

(snipped as admin made a request) But yeah, not impressed with 4e to go back on topic.... :) I will stick with 1e, pathfinder, and 3.5 as I can find it for the most part.

Love it or hate it, 3e style

Just to add something, the fantasy book Warriors & Warlocks for Mutants and Masterminds stands a good chance of falling into the "love" grouping for myself due to the Conan style pace of the story line - it is a wicked system to play if you are a Conan fan.

4E - 18 Months Later: Love it or hate it?

Indeed :P I feel the same way when it comes to the skills in 4e. Debates can get heated at the real life game table. Online? The insults from the people on the board just tell me which people not to take advice from when I get around to posting some of the stuff my 4e table in any case. ;) If...

Love it or hate it, 3e style

Like it... I would love it except for the Other Systems. Gimme' GURPS, WEG's D6, and 1e for the Love section. The OGL, 3.0, and 3.5 systems have strong core mechanics which let people choose - for good or bad - among the basics without too much of a fight at the game table when things break...

4E - 18 Months Later: Love it or hate it?

I refer to the errata, and you admit the errata comes from Dragon Mag. Hence my point... And for the record, the heal action confirms my point. It is an action - not a non-action. In a closed encounter system, nothing happens in a void. That action has to have consequences or the system breaks...

4E - 18 Months Later: Love it or hate it?

Aroo? :P Looks like you were talking about d20 to me. And for the record, Dragon Mag was the official core rules update system for 2e. While I think it sucked, the result is a tone of core rules for out of combat events. jdrakeh, you can not ignore the action costs of those skills without...

4E - 18 Months Later: Love it or hate it?

I would ask you to look up Heal as a skill - what type of action is it? If you meet a GM willing to let you use that kind of rule out of an encounter cycle, I will show you a doomed campaign in the making once those players are able to use the high level powers and actions "out of combat". ;)...

4E - 18 Months Later: Love it or hate it?

I will point you to the 3.5 rules for the same things in order to rebute your point which states that the old systems do not have those things. ;) I mentioned 1e as one example. Heck, even 2e has more rules for such things. *shrug* The real difference - and my main point - is that 4e forces...
