D&D Books That Don't Really Get Used

I have bookshelves full of D&D books (from every edition) and I probably have only used 10% of them. I've given up on feeling guilty about this and have taken to calling myself a "collector". If I'm just completing my "collection", I don't feel so bad about not actually using the material in...

    Constitution = hit points?

I use it for negative hit points. I use (Con Bonus + Level + 10) for the number of negative hit points you can receive before you are dead. So if you are a 5th level Barbarian with a 16 Con, you don't die at -10 hit points, you'd die at -18 hit points. I made this change because I found that...

Pathfinder 1E A gripey letter to Paizo

Sorry to hear about your situation, but I can't say that I've ever had a problem with my Dragon or Dungeon subscription in the 3 years that I've been subscribing. If you're convinced that your local post office is not the culprit, is it possible that someone is swiping your copy out of your...

    Humor in sourcebooks

I think increasing the amount of humor in sourcebooks would be a great idea. Many Planescape fans (like myself) will recall that almost every section of a major Planescape sourcebook had a quote from some random character that was usually a little funny while also helping to introduce the...

    Questions about Iron Heroes?

I notice that the Book of Iron Might and the Iron Heroes are both written by Mike Mearls. I do not own either book, but they sound rather similar. If I buy Iron Heroes, would there be any point in buying the Book of Iron Might? Thanks in advance.

How many teachers on the boards?

I'm in the same boat as the original poster: my D&D gaming group includes 4 people, and 3 are teachers. And, yes, we are all mourning the end of summer, too. :)

Is Caster Level a prerequisite for creating magic items?

Warning: this is a very lame post. This is completely irrelevant to the highly technical points that you are making, but I actually did see someone do a targeted dispel once. We were fighting a powerful lich whose ring seemed to be helping him a lot, so the cleric in the party did a targeted...

    Alchohol During A D&D Game?

I'm 32 years old. I've never consumed alcohol while gaming, and neither have any of the people I've ever played with. We've never even considered doing so. (And, yes, we do drink at parties and social functions.) Like I said, I've never really thought about it. But now that I am thinking...

Is Caster Level a prerequisite for creating magic items?

I don't see any intellectual dishonesty in what dcollins quoted. The quote indicates that Monte a) believes that caster level as a prereq is part of the canonical interpretation of the rules and b) that he thinks its a lingering mistake. I don't see how the heading that you added to the quote...

Is Caster Level a prerequisite for creating magic items?

Hello all. Long ago, near the beginning of 3rd edition, Monte Cook posted the following clarification on his website. He directs us to the text in the DMG about creating magic items, and then he comments as follows. Now since Monte was (apparently) in charge of writing this part of the DMG...

Anybody tired of god-o-centric d&d worlds

Although this is a bit of a departure from D&D, you might also check out Monte Cook's Arcana Evolved (or Arcana Unearthed). If I recall correctly, his system has no gods, no clerics, no alignment, and wizards have access to (vastly reduced) healing spells.

Clone Wars (or, Mace Windu: Superman)

I like this explanation a lot.

What is the worst edited/proofread product you've seen?

I've read over and over again about d20/D&D products that are poorly edited or poorly proofread. Originally, I thought that these were just nitpicks from English teachers. That was until I took a look at the Star Wars Dark Side Sourcebook (from Wizards of the Coast, no less!). That thing...

Prediction of a gaming boom/ Edition discussion

I was recently walking through my grandparents' nursing home and saw a flyer advertising euchre night in the main activity center. And it occurred to me that in 30 years, they'll be advertising D&D night instead. :-)

    Concentration and casting defensively

No, you do not provoke an AoO when you botch your Concentration check when Casting Defensively.

    Mirror Image and Combat Reflexes

Personally, I agree with everything Hypersmurf has written in this thread. (Usually I don't submit "me too" replies, but it sounds like the person who started the thread wanted a general idea about what people in the D&D community think. Hence, a "me too" is appropriate in this case.)

I have a real problem with Tumble

I think Monte Cook submitted a house rule for this situation long, long ago. If I remember correctly, he suggested that the Tumble roll should be an opposed roll rather than a static DC. Again, IIRC, the tumbler rolled a tumble check and the opponent rolled a d20 modified by his BAB (only)...

    Wil Wheaton Drops Dungeon Column

I agree with Colonel Hardisson that it was nice to spend a page at the end of the magazine putting a human face on a gaming and RPGs in general. After all, gaming has a pretty bad reputation, sometimes well-deserved. It was nice to see an adult, non-munchkin perspective on how gaming fits into...

    Deflect in SWRPG

Hi all. I'm an old D&D player but a new Star Wars RPG player. I've got 3 questions about the Jedi Deflect Special Ability. First, the text says that "deflecting an attack is a reaction that costs the Jedi a move action in his next round," but what if a character knows he wants to activate...

Anakin's path to darkness too steep! (SPOILERS)

I wrestled with the same misgivings. I was also concerned about Anakin's rapid decent into evil brutality in the movie. But after watching it a few times, here's what I came up with. Palpatine told him that in order to find the way to defeat death, he'd have to be stronger with the dark side...
