WOTC undecided over OGL/GSL. Why you should care

I think it's important to remember that Clark is not at all dependent on Necromancer or d20 for his income, or even a significant portion of his income. I think he's more spooked as a D&D fan, and, in the last eight years when people were fretting about all kinds of things, I haven't seen him...

    Colors of magic (Help, please!)

Just a note -- there's a series of PDFs doing colours of magic available at the ENWorld store that you might want to look at: http://enworld.rpgnow.com/index.php?cPath=217&sort=xa&filter_id=32

    Announcing: The Dreamworld Database

Looks really well-designed! Best of luck.

GSL questions for Scott Rouse and Mike Lescault

The original belief was actually that all RPG stuff out there, including incompatible systems, helps drive the market leader's sales -- that's it's good for the market leader if there are smaller companies out there servicing the niche RPGers and keeping them playing RPGs rather than switching...

    Various Gary Gygax Blog Entries/Tributes/Podcasts

Screenwriter John August also has a tribute post. He's written some fairly big movies like Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, etc.

WotC Doesn't (Didn't) Understand the OGL

He wrote a module for Atlas, but I'm not sure how much else. I figure you're right about them not talking to Mearls -- though I don't remember him being on any of the discussion lists so I'm not sure how up he is on the execution of the license as opposed to working with covered material.

WotC Doesn't (Didn't) Understand the OGL

Psion has mentioned it in other posts and I remember how the OGL in (I think) the Monster Manual 2 wasn't properly implemented. The guys at Lone Wolf, makers of Hero Lab, said this in a forum post: Frankly, amateurs with no legal expertise were discussing and debating how WotC would handle...

How often does Grappling happen in your game?

My group is at 13th -- so I avoid using it because it would really be pretty much an at will TPK.

    Non-Villainous Antagonists?

Just a note, I read a really good term for this kind of opponent -- contagonist. I think Malfoy in Harry Potter falls into this (unless he turns into a real antagonist in the books that haven't been movie-ized yet).

D&D 4E Interesting Article on OGL and 4E

I agree. That was point #2 that we were discussing earlier -- and I think revokability is the biggest one and definitely makes it not an open license.

D&D 4E Interesting Article on OGL and 4E

I agree, but after Jan 2009 the fee goes away -- so I think it'd just not count as open (for that reason) in 2008, then afterwards it's the other stuff that's the problem.

D&D 4E Interesting Article on OGL and 4E

Definitely -- the people who came up with the theory think that White Wolf, Steve Jackson Games, and all those other folks back in the 80s and 90s were great for WotC. One of Dancey's further motivations in pushing the OGL was that, during the 90s, there was a large fracturing of the rules sets...

D&D 4E Interesting Article on OGL and 4E

Number 2 is the big one IMO. A license simply is not an open license if it's revocable.

D&D 4E Interesting Article on OGL and 4E

I think you misunderstand how network externalities and the Skaff Effect work here. WotC doesn't care if PHB purchasers also buy a copy of Mutant's & Masterminds, they've already sold their PHB. Their real worry is that the gaming group will, instead of buying into M&M for their supers fix...

Gleemax Terms of Use - Unacceptable

I'm not quite sure I see how this is a good argument that one should give up even more of their rights when posting their writing to a forum. If anything, it should be an argument that the terms of the release form should be looser.

    Best Post-apocalyptic RPG?

Most of the print stuff is going to be older, and possibly hard to find. eBay can work pretty good though. Here's a few off the top of my head: Aftermath! Waste World (sort of gonzo) Twilight 2000 Warp World --none of those are d20, and I think all but Waste World are available as PDF too.

OGL To Be Renamed Game System License (GSL)

A bunch of companies support M&M via both OGL and more formally through Superlink. Adamant dual-stats VIA OGL to Spirit of the Century. Fiery Dragon and Mystic Eye supported Arcana Unearthed. I used a few elements from 3rd party folks in my books.

    LotR: Galadriel Triumphant

That's really cool -- and a great twist on the dark empire. Instead of being ruled by fear it's governed by fanatical devotion and love, perhaps almost like a cult. It could even have a creepy, too-perfect aesthetic. Not nightmare landscapes but everything made too beautiful. Ira Levin...

Gleemax Terms of Use - Unacceptable

As a point of comparison, here's a generic release form that you'd use when submitting a screenplay to a production company or studio: Note that movie studios/prodcos are often subject to much larger lawsuits than what you might get off a roleplaying supplement, submitting a screenplay for...
