Should I pass up the Dragonstar Essential Collection?

I would think it would be available soon. I picked up the set at Origins.

How long do you like your D&D battles to last?

I like battles that last a good, long while. This gives a chance to do some tactics and not just run up and bash. My group, though, is a bunch of wargamers at heart so we enjoy the minitures and the squares and the moving stuff around. We had a new player new to our group once and he made a...

So, how do people come up with character names, anyway?

Foppish pirate. That's funny! :) If you need a background for him just check out a real pirate named Stede Bonnet.

So, how do people come up with character names, anyway?

I've got "The Complete Guide to Middle-Earth" by Robert Foster. It's got over 550 pages of names from Tolkiens books. It gets used quite a bit when people are stuck for names; we'll just open to a random page and start reading down until something looks interesting.

Your biggest screw-up as a DM?

My worst DM flub was to do a total party kill. This wasn't just any TPK but it was in a campaign that had a definite ending, and the TPK was about 5 hours of playing time from the end of the campaign! So the players played the same characters for about a year, just to have them all accidently...

Ever kill a familiar? I did.

I had my rat familiar killed by a cone of cold from an Ogre Mage. Oops. I think that most of the time we actually forget about familiars when area of effect spells go off. Unfortunately they are usually just used for the bonus, with the drawbacks forgotten. We have a wizard/cleric with an...

    Handling maps in your game

For dungeon maps, or maps where combat might occur, I draw stuff out on an 8.5" x 11" engineering paper with 1/4" squares. One of these pages has exactly the same number of squares as the large chessex battlemat that we use. Therefore, I make each level of a dungeon fit on one of the...

How does your group handle a character's Hit Points?

    In my group we can either roll and re-roll 1's or take the average d4 = 3, d6 = 4, d8 = 5, d10 = 6, and d12 = 7

Anyone have the Iron Kingdoms book? I have questions

There aren't really any additional Wonderous Items or armor or weapon enhancements. There are some alchemical items (acids, antitoxins, curatives, etc.) and grenades. The summon spells, Summon Monster and Summon Natures Ally, have a changed list of creatures. Also, the summoned creature gets...

Anyone have the Iron Kingdoms book? I have questions

They are still the same, Exotic Weapon to use, Craft (small arms) to reload.

Anyone have the Iron Kingdoms book? I have questions

I took another check through for you, but still didn't see anything. I really need to find the time to start reading this instead of just flipping through! :)

Opinions on Which Mega-Module to Run

I'm not really familiar with the three you listed so I can't really make an educated comment. But, another big module that I've just got done reading is Vault of Larin Karr by Necromancer. It seems like a very good module. The PC's will have a lot of different options open to them at any one...

Anyone have the Iron Kingdoms book? I have questions

Druids and Bards are pretty much the same. Druids can use any light armor and have a list of weapons they are proficient with (club, dagger, greatclub, handaxe, quarterstaff, shortbow, all spears, and slings). They must be of NG, N, CN, or NE alignments. The Bard (War-Bard) has it's skill...

Anyone have the Iron Kingdoms book? I have questions

The obvious copy and paste problem didn't really bother me, I just found it kind of amusing. I'm looking forward now to the World Guide also. The IK Character Guide was an impulse buy at Origins but I'm pretty happy with what I've seen so far.

    Starting Wealth

My group gives the PC wealth for higher levels as in the DMG. But, when I DM I'll sort of "short change" the party on magic for a little while in the future, nothing drastic, but just enough to eventually even out. I think next time I DM I'll only let new characters have about 1/3 of the...

Anyone have the Iron Kingdoms book? I have questions

I've only read about 30 pages and done some flipping thru to answer questions. In the first 30 pages I only saw one word misspelled. But in flipping thru I saw that the Ranger has the following in the class ability descriptions: Woodland Stride (EX): IK rangers gain the woodland stride...

    reptilian humanoid villain race suggestion

I recently completed a campaign where I used Xill, from the Monster Manual, as the army for the BBEG. They were fun and their planewalk ability drove the players crazy. They are also Lawful Evil. So a Xill might be a good base for an interplanar Warlord. D.

    Absent Players

In the group I play in if a player can't make it one of the other players will run the character. This usually means that the missing player's character will only be around in combat. They still get full XP as we really haven't had a case with a "bad" excuse. If more than one player can't...

Anyone have the Iron Kingdoms book? I have questions

There are 20 (!) new domains. They are Adventure, Atrifice, Assassination, Autumn, Dark Lore, Farmstead, Madness, Mechanika, Mendicant, Mercantilism, Plunder, Predation, Reighteousness, Seafaring, Spring, Summer, Tyranny, Undeath, Warrior, and Winter. Also, quite a few of the existing domains...

    IKCG is at the printers!

They were for sale at Origins and I picked up a copy. I've been answering questions in a thread in "General".
