D&D 4E Abstracting Wealth in 4e: good idea or bad idea?

I have no real idea of what abstract wealth means. Can you provide an example?

    D&D 4E 4e is Cool :)

Dice4Hire, "must spread XP before..." Anyway, I was gonna XP you and comment, it must be nice to have the time to have the choice. 3 games? That's just crazy talk! ;)

D&D 4E Poll for 4e DMs: Alignment System

4E's alignment system is a huge step in the right direction. 3.X was abysmal and mostly unplayable. It had so many stupid quirks that I say good riddance. 4E's is really good for two reasons: simplified and allows for an ambiguous alignment, and the mechanics don't require it. In before the...

    One Encounter Per Day

Actually, I thought the magic number was 4 encounters per day. The big problem with a larger encounter is that your encounter powers don't recharge before you hit the next wave. You can of course handwave that, and I certainly recommend it, specifically in light of healing powers. Outside of...

    September DDI Update news

Thanks for the update, mudbunny. I personally couldn't care less about customized character portraits. I'd MUCH rather have the ability to customize the printout so I can reduce the number of printed pages and save my expensive ink bill. A customized portrait should be higher resolution...

    Question on jumping

That's my point, though. In the OP, it seems like the players just want to reach something, because that's easier, but I think clearly from a rules perspective the PC wants to attack (Specifically, Grab), and therefore any rules applying to grabbing or attacking cannot be violated. Thus, the...

How much ability score variation is too much?

Agreed with the above. Random ability scores simply aren't my cup of tea. The game balance is too dependent on them.

    Elf Re-roll question

It's not as explicit as we'd like, but elven accuracy is a free action, thus you can use it whenever you want. Although it's a trigger, there's nothing explicitly saying you have to decide before the "hit-ness" of the attack is resolved. In practice, it's certainly not overpowered to let the...

    Question on jumping

Nothing specifically in the rules prohibits running in a circle, or even back and forth, and for a high jump I'm not sure I would argue that much. For a long jump, I'd argue it has to be roughly in the same direction. Two additional comments, though: Grydan, I think your calculations are a...

Help me Create a Memorable Encounter

To be honest, I hate planned capture encounters because they simply don't ring true. It's just downright silly that this Thaxos character would ever not plans things appropriately. The targeted PC would therefore be caught alone and during a period where weapons and armor aren't easily...

P1 - King of the Trollhaunt Warrens (Spoilers)

I had come up with a few preliminary ideas, but nothing set in stone yet. For those who care, I've updated the second document to include all answers so far found in this thread. Thanks to all who are contributing! :)

P1 - King of the Trollhaunt Warrens (Spoilers)

This would be a good opportunity to provide the players information that they might have missed from past failures. In particular, he might mention that Skalmad can't be permanently killed. He can also tell the heroes about Dethos the Scribe and clue the party in on his role in the Trollhaunt.

P1 - King of the Trollhaunt Warrens (Spoilers)

The bargain could be a prelude to Revenge of the Giants, in which case, no. The galeb duhr does not willingly give up. He will, however, try again later and may try to convince any goliaths to join him.

P1 - King of the Trollhaunt Warrens (Spoilers)

Norgg refers to himself in the third person and knows all of the skulls by name. If the PCs talk to him, he asks for their names and then stares at each, measuring their skulls visually. He frequently switches between giant and common, even in the middle of sentences. The bear is quite happy...

P1 - King of the Trollhaunt Warrens (Spoilers)

This group of troglodytes has modified their tribe symbol from an eye to an eye enclosed by a stalagmite, though that might be difficult to discern. The roper would happily talk to anyone speaking primordial, but basically tell them he's glad for fresh (non-trog, non-troll) meat. Maybe if the...

P1 - King of the Trollhaunt Warrens (Spoilers)

A set of very well tended wooden bridges with stone supports connects the islands leading to the Moondoor. These bridges resemble a large boardwalk and several shops are stationed on some of the larger connecting islands (sweet shops, souvenirs, etc.).

    Armor and Extended Rest

I have a hard time buying an explanation of verisimilitude when the house-rule gets tougher as the PC gets more experienced. Also, there are disease rules and no one's stopping people from adding the Common Cold if that's the type of game they enjoy. I don't see the argument holding any water.

    What a creature knows question

Not at all. The post by Doctor Proctor doesn't have the indentation correct. The last three lines are all indented. That means they're all part of the effect, which doesn't grant the secondary attack until the victim attacks.

    What a creature knows question

As a side note regarding Defender's Gambit, the major downside is that it costs the victim something. There are cases where a monster would choose not to lose his one immediate action to make a basic attack. If the monster has, say, an immediate action teleport power to get out of Dodge, then...
