Agreed. This same concept is applied to things like marks and divine challenge. That is, if you make an area attack that includes the fighter/paladin/etc. then you're not affected by the mark/DC.

This is where I'm saying your assumption might be flawed. I'm alluding that the calculation of the difficulty of an encounter gets far less precise the further away from N we get. So, if a level N encounter (1000xp) is an accurate estimate (this is our baseline), then a level N+4 encounter...

No. It would be more than 2000 xp. It cannot be less than 2000 xp. If the first one is 1000 xp and the second one, given a short rest, is also 1000 xp, then having the second one without a short rest MUST be >= 1000 xp. So, the assumption shouldn't be trying to gauge the lessened difficulty...
