Dungeons & Dragons Shifts to Franchise Model, Dan Ayoub Named as Head

My suspicion is that for the vast majority of people buying their products, the difference is largely going to be negligible because as you mention, there’s a bit of ballyhooing going on with they are touting this. For a 3PP or partner, it may be a great deal of difference at a business level...

Dungeons & Dragons Shifts to Franchise Model, Dan Ayoub Named as Head

How did that shift between 2020 to today? I’m not sure I could pinpoint the exact difference in a way noticeable to me. Like, for instance, BG3 came out in that time frame despite being a product designed earlier on. If Descent into Avernus was supposed to tie into BG3 in some way, they...

D&D General Wearing a lantern on your belt?

Just because I can envision some sort of lantern like device attached to my belt doesn’t mean I want it function as a light source for my D&D game. If you want a light source, you need a hand to hold it, or a special magic item taking up an attuned item slot.

Dungeons & Dragons Shifts to Franchise Model, Dan Ayoub Named as Head

I’ve read that statement a few times and I still don’t know what they mean by franchise model, how that’s different from what they did in the past, or what the impact is to me as a consumer.

    Sinners (2025)

You can say that about any genre. Action Comedy, Romantic Adventure, Sci-Fi Drama.

Raiding old western films for a short campaign arc.

The Ox-Bow Incident starring Henry Fonda, Anthony Quinn and Harry Morgan. Two cowboys join a posse that’s been thrown together to pursue cattle rustlers and it turns out that frontier justice, prejudice, and misinformation can lead to really bad consequences.

D&D 5E (2024) The Undead Army Necromancer is not Designable

Well, not at least any single edition for all cases. I still think D&D is more than just the current edition.

D&D 5E (2024) The Undead Army Necromancer is not Designable

I would’ve agreed with that once upon a time but I think that can lead to bad game design. Some concepts that will work fine with, but others, like the necromancer, do not.

D&D General What if the Wind Dukes of Aaqa were actually Djinn?

I like it, and I feel stupid for not having thought about it before. I think it brings a distant reference from D&D lore that seems disconnected and makes it something I can understand and communicate to players better. It immediately enriches the lore IMO.

D&D General Hasbro enters gambling deal using Dungeons & Dragons intellectual property

I think the broader discussion of gambling and the problems/benefits related to it are largely not on topic for the forum. Not meaning to shut down conversation, but just why the topic is kind of self-limited.

D&D 5E (2024) The Undead Army Necromancer is not Designable

To my mind, the horde necromancer is the BBEG. It’s an NPC antagonist archetype in virtually every media I’ve seen, not a protagonist. Whenever I’ve seen it attempted by players, it brings up visions of “Here comes the heroic party into town…followed by the zombie horde” and it’s such a jarring...

D&D General How Do I Help Mentor a GM Making Rookie Mistakes?

I would ask her what she’s aiming for with some of the rule changes. Is it that she wants a dark, gritty game? Does she feel the tone of the game should be one where PC struggle, lasting wounds, and threat of death are important? Part of this is to level set that she’s deviating from the rules...

Phase 5 of the MCU is over

Do Marvel phases even make sense anymore externally for viewers? Externally meaning that they speak to some sort of story arc versus an internal business related meaning?

D&D's New Solo Player Guideline Explained

Yeah the solo play thing is bugging me a little. Solo play to me means I’m playing the game by myself with some sort of randomizer mechanic to help simulate the GM. I don’t dislike the idea of one on one DM and player but I would like to see the other as well.

[James Bond] The next movie directed by Denis Villeneuve

Ehhh, don’t know about that. Within reason, directors have a lot of ability to force script changes if they are big enough directors. If it’s an outright bad script, they typically don’t sign on to begin with. Also, my issues with Spectre come down to pacing, which is not just the script.

D&D General In this day and age, people still laugh when you invite them to play D&D.

I’ve noticed a difference in overall acceptance, not necessarily willingness to want to participate, i.e. I’m don’t hear much overall mocking of how I like to spend my free time. Now that could also be a function of age too. Kids and young adults can just be meaner than adults, but there were...

[James Bond] The next movie directed by Denis Villeneuve

I don’t have a problem with Villeneuve but I’m likewise not beside myself with joy over it. He’s a good director, but so was Sam Mendes who gave us one exceptional Bond movie (Skyfall) and one terrible one (Spectre).

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

But what is bad about that scene, or others that it inspired? It’s a wonderful scene. And as a trope, it’s no different from say “Silence of the Lambs”, or “A Few Good Men.” Maybe I’m missing the original post, but even if a verbal confrontation or clashing of worldviews between protagonist and...

    Disney sues Midjourney

I’m just gonna hope these two sides (AI use of copyrighted material versus the endless copyright holding company) just keep knifing each other in court.
