D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Disparaged because WotC is trying to be inclusive, unless one has a particular moral stance that is counter to that? Well, you see - you pivoted from grognard to people of a certain moral view who disagree with WotC’s current position. My point is for grognards. Of course, sadly, there are...

So you feel the issue has little to do with storybased gaming vs site-based dungeon crawling, or perceived deadliness of the game or the traditional arguments for why grognards don’t like the direction WotC has taken D&D - instead it’s the moral stance they’ve taken and changes in the rules that...

I’m sorry but that’s simply not true. Cairn, Knave, Shadowdark, OSE, Castles and Crusades, DCC, Mothership, XCrawl - how are any of those games pressured or influenced by WotC? They exist because WotC vacated the space - WotC can’t possibly provide a game for the entire market.

WotC is not catering to a specific personality. They are taking the sum total of experiences they’ve had with the brand, i.e. past products, design decisions, sales, and feedback, and creating a game that will appeal to the broadest number of people. What they’ve determined is that the game that...

D&D 5E (2024) Anyone else dislike the "keyword" style language of 5.24?

I actually prefer the writing in 5e much more to the 5.5 rules - I felt it had a better blend of natural language and rules-speak.

Oy. WotC moved on from the game those people staked their identity to more than 30 years ago.

WotC Chris Perkins announces Retirement from Dungeons and Dragons

I'm not surprised Perkins is retiring - he's been working either with the company as a freelance writer or direct employee for nearly 30 years. There's also always been a trend of designers leaving after they released a new edition. It's been very rare for the designer of a major edition to stay...

Wow, we have totally different experiences of that adventure then. For one, while we had a decent size group (6 or 7 players), we seldom used henchmen/hirelings except on rare occasions. Second, there was less of an assumption that because the rules didn’t explicitly say you could be stealthy...

Except I think the experience of playing Keep on the Borderlands under Basic rules or AD&D 1e/2e plays a lot differently than under 5e. The intent of KotB under earlier rules was that you had to sneak in, find allies, and treat the entire cave system as a stealth mission and do lots of hit and...

Gotcha. For me, playstyle in this context is talking about whether it’s a resource management game (equipment, encumbrance, rations, NOT HP and spells) versus a tactical skirmish game versus a storytelling heroic action (or storytelling horror or storytelling mystery, etc). To me the mechanics...
