D&D 5E (2024) Is Combat Tedious on Purpose?

You’re not just railing against one company, you’re railing against the entire system which just isn’t really going to get anywhere.

D&D 5E (2024) Is Combat Tedious on Purpose?

The shareholders certainly would take issue. And really, you’ve already said you’re not looking at this from the perspective of what’s financially good for the company. It’s fine to be a fan of the hobby and the game. But don’t get that confused with the primary motives of the people running WotC.

D&D 5E (2024) Is Combat Tedious on Purpose?

The words “fiduciary responsibility” come to mind. They are part of a publicly traded company. I agree there needs to be more emphasis on stewardship but that is definitely the business argument for it.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Look. The real villain of Titanic is the iceberg. Once again, we fail to put the blame on the actual responsible parties. Clearly the ship had the right of way. And it didn’t even stop to help once it’d done all that damage. Rude!

How Would Your Favorite Game System Handle This?

So I’ll use AD&D 2e for my answers (it’s probably my second favorite edition, but I feel like 5e has been kinda talked to death or at least more people have a sense of how it’d work.) 2e really doesn’t handle this elegantly as part of the system - it relies on the DM to adjudicate, and leans...

D&D General Matt Colville on the “Forever DM”

Haven’t heard that name in awhile. But, yes, a perfect example of someone whose manner distorts the message. And yet, his style is part of the point and for me, I totally understand why people grate against it even though I find it to be extremely clear and effective. He clearly pays attention...

    D&D General Limiting Utility Cantrips

I actually love the idea of the PCs finding a rat in the trap! It gives them a clear clue that "Hey, there are pressure plates around here!"

D&D General Doing Tragedy in D&D

I think there’s a difference. Putting a location in front of the PCs to explore is an expected requirement, I.E. there’s no adventure if you don’t go into the dungeon, and I, the DM, have nothing else prepared for tonight so why don’t you just go into the dungeon, please? But enacting a tragedy...

D&D General Doing Tragedy in D&D

So going back to literary definition of tragedy, if the PCs can change the outcome, wouldn’t it cease to be a tragedy? If I could intervene in Romeo and Juliet and convince Romeo to not take the poison, or for the Capulets and Monatgues to come to the table to air their grievances, etc, I can...

D&D General Matt Colville on the “Forever DM”

If we’re just talking voice, I would listen to Matt Colville’s voice all day long versus the what is typically out there in long form YouTube videos. Most seem paced at x1.5 or x2 speed where the speaker is rattling off words without ever taking a breath to let something sink it, no matter how...

D&D General Doing Tragedy in D&D

So, this is where I like Gothic Horror as a genre, particularly Ravenloft. Ravenloft allows a player to get their thrills from the horror, but the stories of many of the NPCs are tragic in nature. If a player wants to lean into that aspect and interact with the NPCs in that way, then it’s...

    D&D General Limiting Utility Cantrips

Ah yes, the ubiquitous 10 pound rat. They’re good eats. I don’t know what all this delicious in Dungeon stuff is, I just need my 10 pound rats that wander all over.

D&D General Matt Colville on the “Forever DM”

Having watched many, many hours of his content, I can say that the first person to say that Matt Colville will ruffle feathers and his personality and opinions are not for everyone, is Matt Colville.

Do you really think that’s a distinction people make, the person versus the desire?
