What monster killed your first PC?

My first ever character, a "sea elf", was killed by orcs after he opened the door to their lair, twenty minutes into the game. This was at MaineCon 1977. I was hooked.

Yup, that's why we picked him to do the cover for Northern Crown. While so many contemporary illustrators are into dark-n-gritty, Aaron's work is all sunlight and classic old masters feel. Truly great stuff.

Northern Crown RPG - Do I need both books?

Yikes! The decision to open with a dungeon crawl was a deliberate move by Gareth and myself. We thought it would allow players to explore the new core classes, feats, cultures, and gear, without too much backstory. The next one will likely be a desert island adventure with a supernatural twist...

Northern Crown RPG - Do I need both books?

The books are out. Atlas Games shipped them last week. I saw them at my FLGS yesterday.

Northern Crown RPG - Do I need both books?

Yes, this is in the Northern Crown bibliography -- I have it on my bookshelf. Excellent reference. OK, my turn: Arthur Quinn's A New World: An Epic of Colonial America from the Founding of Jamestown to the Fall of Québec was the single biggest help in writing Northern Crown. You can get it here.

Northern Crown RPG - Do I need both books?

Thanks, and thanks. As for the witches, I figured that if they really existed as a persecuted minority, they would head for the "new world" too and set up their own nation. A good idea, until the Puritans show up just down the coast!

Northern Crown RPG - Do I need both books?

And I'm waiting for my daughter to get teeth -- hmmm, maybe I shouldn't be in such a hurry about it.

Northern Crown RPG - Do I need both books?

Let's let the author field that one: New World Adventures is focused on creating and managing characters, equipping them, giving 'em weapons, equipment, and spells. There's also an overview of the game world, more than enough to give any player their bearings. You can buy NC:NWA, download the...

    Mesoamerican Campaign?

If you haven't read Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond, do so now. For the record, the Incas had an excellent infrastructure of well-built roads, but because their prehistoric ancestors had killed and eaten everything* that could have been domesticated into a draft animal, they had to rely...

would u like to explore the dungeon?

I'd like to hear from dungeon about his game group -- how does a 15-year old get into D&D these days? Annoying spelling aside, I think it's great that he's posting here -- rock on, dude! (That's a sample of the way we spoke back in the day that drove our elders and betters crazy).

    Northern Crown Ships Monday

I just got my copies direct from John. Aaron Campbell's cover art alone makes these books worth buying -- it is gorgeous. Woohoo!

    New Hampshire RPG Convention (OGC)

Stopped by OGC briefly on Saturday -- I was really heartened by how many enthusiastic gamers I saw huddled around the tables. I didn't have a chance to talk to many folks, but I did eavesdrop on a few games. It really killed me that I don't have time these days to actually sit down and play a...

    d20 Fantasy in Colonial America?

I grew up on the north shore of MA, not far from Salem (not only witchy, but also Lovecraft country!). The witches of Northern Crown have a lot more to do with 17th c. folks' wildest fears about them than with the sad reality of 1692. The Victorian era is of couse much later than the time period...

    New Hampshire RPG Convention (OGC)

Preorder! No chance of scamming them from me! My hard copies haven't come yet -- they were just shipped today via USPS from Minnesota. But i'll be at the con on Saturday around noon to chat with you all anyway.

    d20 Fantasy in Colonial America?

I do like the first two or three books in the Alvin Maker series, but gave up partway through the fourth one. I'll have to give it another go someday. OSC often starts strong for me but fails to hold my interest -- come to think of it, I also conked out after the second Ender sequel and after...

    FLGS in Boston?

Excellent selection of RPG books (and SF/fantasy books in general) at Pandemonium, JFK St (The Garage Mall), Harvard Square, Cambridge) Warhammer, RPGs, and CCGs (and a gaming room) at Your Move Games, Davis Square, Somerville.

    d20 Fantasy in Colonial America?

Northern Crown exists in the same world as Nyambe -- they are compatible. As for China, hey, in the original homebrew Northern Crown campaign, some of our PCs circumnavigated the globe, stopping in Xipangu and Cathay along the way. Again, the seeds for your own world-spanning campaign are in there.

    d20 Fantasy in Colonial America?

It will be called Southern Cross, it will be a long time before it gets published. Witches are a huge part of Northern Crown -- you'll like the possibilities for adventure in the conflict between the Holy Commonwealth of New England and the Witchling coven of Naumkeag.
