    Northern Crown Preview/Intro

As Northern Crown line developer, I second Gareth's request for things you'd like to see to support the game, although I suppose you will know more clearly after you all see what's in the two books coming out in August. I know what's on my wish list, and Gareth and I are already discussing it...

How did guns change medieval societies?

Armor was still being worn in 1650, 300 years after guns appeared on the battlefield, so it can't be that simple. The true relation between guns and the decline of armor is a little more complex. Armorers could easily make suits of armor that could stop bullets. In fact, the armor was "proofed"...

    Elizabethan character classes and races?

I just bought Marvel 1602, definitely good resource material there. For Faerie, Queen, and Country is Victorian-era, but still has lots of info on faeries and the British Crown. Stormborn, thanks for including the link to Northern Crown. it does include some character classes, feats, weapons...

    Firearms and the Campaign

They're only unbalancing if you make them more reliable, accurate, and powerful than their real-world analogs. Three shots a minute would be a good rate of fire for a flintlock -- that's about one shot every three or four combat rounds. In my forthcoming Northern Crown campaign setting (go...

What do you look for when you purchase an Adventure Module?

One thing I'd like to start seeing in adventure modules is a flow chart, with the major decisions faced by the PCs as branching points on the chart. I'm a visual learner, and I tend to grok the structure of an adventure better that way.

    Amazing Engine

I am a big fan of the For Faerie, Queen & Country setting -- for those of you who aren't familiar with it, it was a Victorian supernatural setting, with an emphasis on the fey folk. There were thaumaturgical societies, royal magicians, Holmesian detectives -- it was notably short on physical...

Tekumel: Empire of the Petal Throne

Thanks for the Review... Great review, Billy. Now I want to dig out my TSR boxed set of Petal Throne and pore over the beautiful maps.(My dad bought the game for me for Christmas in 1977, along with about 100 minis, many of which I still have). I have a soft spot for Tekumel -- it's just so...

Things to do on the East Coast (when you're 10th level)

Have them show up at a renfair, gaming convention, or a LARP event -- everyone will comment on their cool costumes and makeup. If you play your cards right, they won't even know they're on Earth until they walk out into the parking lot. As for what kind of trouble they're likely to get into...

[d20 Past] What should be in Volume II?

Yes, that would be me. Northern Crown: New World Adventures, coming as a 2-volume hardcover from Atlas Games August 2005. I'm professionally curious to see how d20 Past covers the Age of Exploration!

How do you describe a new encounter?

I think it's fine to confront PCs with really powerful opponents now and then, as long as you give them the option to retreat, surrender, outwit the creature, or find its Achilles heel. Maybe when the PCs are getting close to a powerful monster, you can give them some clues, such as: -- the...

Northern Crown - Fantasy Adventuring in Europe's Colonization of North America

There are werecreatures in NC. Native PCs can also have animal ancestries, which give them some of the abilities of a wolf, bear, or turtle. The game includes a list of d20 System monsters appropriate for the campaign, plus about 2 dozen new monsters, all integrated into a set of encounter...

Northern Crown - Fantasy Adventuring in Europe's Colonization of North America

I think having adventure modules available is crucial, and I would like to have at least one out there by the time the books are released in August. I have a couple of adventures from the old web-based campaign that I can update and re-release. The first one is for 1st-level PCs, and the second...

Northern Crown - Fantasy Adventuring in Europe's Colonization of North America

NC includes all you need to patch the campaign world into d20 rules. New weapons, armor, equipment, core classes, prestige classes, skills, feats, and magic are found in the first volume; encounter tables, monsters, magic items, and treasure tables will be included in the second volume. That...

Northern Crown - Fantasy Adventuring in Europe's Colonization of North America

All the maps and illustrations you see in the flyer were created by me. No major changes, just a major reorganization and expansion of the material. My rules for sea battles did not make it into the manuscript, but I'd love to release them as an expansion set.

Northern Crown - Fantasy Adventuring in Europe's Colonization of North America

Northern Crown does have Vikings, actually. In my alternate history, the Vinland colony survived and the Vinland raiders are the terror of the east coast, having plundered as far south as Boston. "Vinlander" is one of the culture backgrounds available for PCs. Oh yes, and they have guns.
