What takes you the longest in adventure preperation?

Count me among the unhappy statters of NPCs. This is the big weakness of d20 for me, especially at high levels of play. I can spend an hour or more building a bad guy, only to see her defeated in short order by the PCs because my players have had months to figure out how to use their feats...

    Quick Question for Doug Anderson

There's a recent thread on rpg.net about it, but I'm happy to repeat the info here: Northern Crown: New World Adventures is going to be released by Atlas Games as two d20 softcover books -- the Player's Primer and the Gazetteer. The first book is in the layout stage, the second book is waiting...

Boston EN World game day on Saturday, January 29th

A Mini-No Pants Yet? Congratulations! I'm sorry you won't be in my Northern Crown game this time around. Maybe next time.

Good military strategy books--what do you advise?

The Face of Battle by John Keegan has an excellent account of the battle of Agincourt that can serve as a good introduction to medieval warfare. Very readable.

How long have you been with your gaming group?

27 years. My brother and two friends -- we've gamed together since 1977, sometimes weekly, sometimes only once or twice a year. My wife joined us in 1987. They are the greatest players a DM could wish for, still full of enthusiasm for the game and so clever that they always challenge my skills...

Boston EN World game day on Saturday, January 29th

Actually, Alikander (Mrs. Dougmander) reports that she would like to join the game, too!. An afternoon slot with 5 players would be ideal!

Boston EN World game day on Saturday, January 29th

Ok, ok. Unless my wife is in labor. Maybe. Northern Crown: New World Adventures, anyone? Mohawks, flintlocks, tomahawks, Ben Franklin, bad guys ranklin'; automatons crankin', witches cursing, doxies' lips a-pursing; powdered wigs, whirligigs, and square rigs. Geez, I know I'm a goober, but...

Boston EN World game day on Saturday, January 29th

Dang, I just saw this thread -- late as usual. I may come for a little while just to say hi, if that's ok. I enjoyed myself so much at the last game day I can't imagine missing it.

    What makes an adventure great?

Don't worry if your ideas are mundane. There are only so many basic plots out there. Even something as basic as "find the magic ring hidden the wizard's ruined tower" could be a great adventure for 1st-level characters, as long as you make it fun, intriguing, vivid, exciting, and custom-fit for...

Near Epic play in a modern setting?

Why do you believe that d20 Modern might not be appropriate? My own d20 Modern campaign started very modestly, and is now building toward just the sort of gameplay you describe, with the PCs trying to prevent the end of the world. Seems to work fine at high levels, except for the same problems I...

Campaign Setting that would work nice with Grim Tales?

It's based on d20 System, not d20 Modern. I wrote it to be easy for anyone who has played 3.5e to feel comfortable rolling up a character and diving in. Most of the core classes are available, but there are also six new core classes and a number of new prestige classes too. If you have read...

Campaign Setting that would work nice with Grim Tales?

Just make sure you read the manga rather than see the poorly dubbed, cut to pieces anime version. I have wanted to do Nausicaa as an RPG setting for a long time, have never got around to it. The setting is more Mad Max mixed with 'Arzach (the old Moebius graphic novel) than...

What makes a great campaign setting?

For me, great campaign settings often have a distinct authorial voice rather than the feeling of something written by a committee. When you read the campaign material, you sense the guiding hand of just one or two creators for whom the campaign world is a labor of love or an obsession. I also...

What other of setting finalists from the WotC contest got published

I would love to expand the campaign world of Northern Crown -- creating a fantasy colonial North America required me to sketch out the politics of a fantasy Europe, so the groundwork for such an expansion is already there. Many of the feats, weapons, armor, character classes, inventions, and...

What other of setting finalists from the WotC contest got published

Yes, correct on all counts, and for what it's worth, I did enter it in the WotC setting (what was I thinking?) Currently I'm "pencilled in" for a March release -- I'm sending the final revision of the manuscript to the editor next week, and I'm already working on the illustrations.

[Oct] What's up in your campaign?

Tomorrow night my d20 Modern group is losing a player (sadly, he's moving out-of-state). We intend to send him out on a high note, though. It's a present day campaign linked to Arthurian legend, with the characters searching for Arthur and Merlin's resting places, to wake them before evil fey...

Original Campaigns from Wizards Campaign Creation contest

I didn't read Keyes until after I developed the campaign, but it's uncannily similar in flavor. Alvin Maker, on the other hand, I did read when the books first surfaced, and I'm sure they were a major influence. (I heartily agree with your assessment of them after the third book -- major letdown).

Original Campaigns from Wizards Campaign Creation contest

Thanks! Only their Penumbra line of generic d20 books is on hold -- they never said they were getting out of d20 completely. My campaign world, Northern Crown, is more along the lines of Nyambe -- an original campaign setting with both historical and fantasy elements, but in my case, early...

Original Campaigns from Wizards Campaign Creation contest

That would be a pretty long list -- I bet there are some real gems, though. The link that Jürgen posted is a good start. My own submission to the campaign setting contest was handily rejected but will be published next year by Atlas Games, huzzah!

    Adventuring while pregnant

Hmm, I can just imagine that conversation when the kid turns 16: "Mom, I've decided to become a ranger." "But Justin, I thought we'd agreed you'd become a paladin. Everyone knows rangers never amount to anything. I need a cohort who can detect evil and lay on hands!" "STOP TRYING TO RUN MY...
