    AD&D 2E [2e] What made 2e great?

Backwards compatibility with 1e. Fast character generation. Relatively easy to run combats without using a grid or minis. Awesome campaign settings. Tons of take-it-or-leave-it splatbooks for every taste. (Loved the green historical reference books, anyone remember A Mighty Fortress?)

Tell me about "Any RPG" from before 1990!

Space: 1889, by Frank Chadwick, 1988 (GDW). Victorian adventurers, scientists, and soldiers explore and conquer the inner solar system. Great background info on the Victorian Age, steampunk inventions, a fun alternate history that blends real-world events and personages with fantasy. Venus is...

Grognards: Was the Dex Check a Common House Rule Before 1e?

This is going back to 1977, when we played using the Holmes blue box set. We used percentile dice to determine whether someone succeeded at a non-combat task not otherwise codified in the rules, and didn't even think about the PC's relevant ability. The DM (me, all of 13 years old) simply set...

ENworlder: How long have you been gaming?

31 years. Started with the Holmes blue box set in '77. Damn, I'm old. Still haven't figured out how you win the dang game, either, yuk yuk.

    Changeover Poll

I voted "all earlier edition play" because that was the closest option. I'm actually running two RISUS campaigns and one Castles and Crusades campaign.

Do you not play WOW? Forked Thread: Wil Wheaton plays and reviews 4th.

Name any hobby, and you'll find people who lose themselves in it to avoid problematic aspects of their lives they are having trouble confronting or accepting. You'll also find lots of people who enjoy it as a pleasant diversion, in moderation. As for me, I don't confuse WoW with anything...

    Robots by Vecna

Vecna has tons of recruitment ads on the subways here in Boston. I snicker every time I see them -- "WORK FOR VECNA." Apparently he has great benefits and a casual work environment, compared to most evil NPCs. Maybe their slogan could be, "Most people would give their right hand to work for us."

If your group didn't like 4e...

Switched to RISUS, enjoying it immensely. Thanks, 4e!

    Farewell to thee D&D

The OP's criticisms of 4e resonated with me. My group has switched over to RISUS and we're having more fun playing (and I'm definitely having more fun DMing) than we've had in years. No rules lookups, no grid, no min/maxing, just characters, story, and action. I actually want to thank WotC for...

Help needed: Firearms in D&D (all editions)

Knights in full plate co-existed with firearms for centuries. Bullets did not ignore armor, and armorers certainly did not ignore bullets. Armor was demonstrated to be "proofed" against firearms by shooting a pistol or musket at it, and the resulting dent displayed prominently. Armored cavalry...

For real this time: What is your stance on 4e

Actively dislike the direction 4e has taken, and don't need to spend $90 on the core books to confirm my suspicions, based on reading many, many reviews of the game. So I'm out of D&D entirely -- the mental gymnastics of running high level 3e games has burned me out, and 4e has basically gutted...

D&D 4E 4e playtest report...my effort to convert our group

Two comments: 1. Actually, "archery" comes from the French word for bowmaker, archier, which is in turn related to the Latin word for bow, arcus. The root arcus here describes the shape of the bow itself, not the arrow's trajectory. The idea that missiles travel in an arc was not universally...

    Is this offensive?

Put me down as Offended. Think about it from the point of view of a woman playing D&D for the first time. She's told that female characters are wiser and more attractive than male characters, but they're weaker -- but it's ok, 'cause men are more foolish, less attractive, and stronger. What's...

Gary Gygax has passed. RIP beloved father of RPG's. (merged)

I had the pleasure of spending a rainy morning with Gary at the Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester, MA, back in April '03. He was a soft-spoken, gentle, friendly man, and his legacy is to have created the template for what is emerging as the dominant form of entertainment of the 21st Century --...

Games you thought you'd like and hated and games you thought you'd hate and liked

Wanted to Love, but Hated: GURPS: A universal set of RPG rules? Sign me up! I really really wanted to like GURPS, but it seemed to include almost every game mechanic I hate: hex-based movement, one-second combat turns, an ads/disads character creation system. My one caveat is that the...

What was so bad about DMing 3x?

QFT. If I didn't love my game group so much, and if they weren't so attached to their characters, I would have stopped playing 3e a couple of years ago. For me, joy leaves the building sometime around 12th level. I have high hopes that 4e will make DMing fun again. What burned me out: Doing...

Basic D&D: Did it hook you?

Absolutely -- and that cross-section map of Skull Mountain with the subterranean domed city? Goosebumps, to this day. My dream is to write and illustrate the equivalent of a blue box set for 4e!
