School in California decides to make elementary school students wear RFIDs *Updated*

I think everyone involved did a good job of keeping the politics out of it and, more importantly, kept from letting things get personal.

Anyone else find it annoying to figure out skills for NPCs?

Yep! And this works for at least 75% of NPCs. It's basically how the original rules assumed characters would spend points as well. For more diverse, special, characters you can take a little extra time and get fancier with the skill points.

School in California decides to make elementary school students wear RFIDs *Updated*

The discussion about the job was to equate badges at a place of work with badges at a place of education, rather than as homing beacons used to restrict a child's personal freedom. I continued to reply to the discussion of job options as it related to my argument (in my mind) about what a...

Acquana's Art Thread -- Closed, New Thread Started

I like your lines. You have a particularly good way with faces (an area I struggle with). I'll definately be keeping an eye on this thread. A few of the tighter pieces look good enough to see print in the PDF circuit. I don't know if you've already been published or not... just an observation...

School in California decides to make elementary school students wear RFIDs *Updated*

Agreed. Sometimes, to get what you want, you have to accept the additional responsability and costs associated with what you want. A parent who feels that strongly against the practices of a school, after exhausting all means at his or her disposal to make sure that what the school is doing is...

School in California decides to make elementary school students wear RFIDs *Updated*

Work or be destitute. Big choice there, huh? Oh... or I could flip burgers for minimum wage. That's plenty of cash to take care of a home, vehicle, and dependants. But they can go to other schools. Unless you live in a pretty rural area there are usually several school systems in a given area...

School in California decides to make elementary school students wear RFIDs *Updated*

Read from a great distance, but not triangulated or to an exact location. They would know that student 1 is in somewhere within Area B because the receiver in Area B (areas might be as big as a wing of the school or as small as a classroom depending on the school's budget) is currently powering...

School in California decides to make elementary school students wear RFIDs *Updated*

They shouldn't need to, as others have said: The parents should have some say, not the children. As for my situation. I didn't choose it... it was what was available (the tech industry took a dive a few years ago, if you hadn't heard), but in my time here the level of surveilance has only...

School in California decides to make elementary school students wear RFIDs *Updated*

Because it would be your responsability, not the schools, to tage the child away from school. You, as a parent, most certainly could... and there are lojack/GPS devices on the market specifically for the purpose of giving parents that ability. I specifically stated that these badges were...

School in California decides to make elementary school students wear RFIDs *Updated*

They don't need a proper lojack. If you have to use your badge to open doors or operate elevators you are being tracked by the system that controls all of that (timestamped entries in a logfile showing what doors or terminals you've accessed). And some do have the ability to actually track...

School in California decides to make elementary school students wear RFIDs *Updated*

I just don't see how it instantly becomes "tagged like an animal" (other than to give it a more negative image so that folks on the fence will also see it as a bad thing). It's a badge that is worn during school hours, not an implant or clip that is painfully and permanently applied to your...

What Game System do you play Rifts with?

I did a "World of the Dark Future" campaign a few years ago that was a bit strange but fairly well received. It was meant to be a distant future of the World of Darkness, about 150 years after a world changing event (a combination of the apocalyptic/end game events from Mage, Werewolf, Vampire...

Limited magic campaign......has never failed yet!

And most everyone else is voicing opinions both on your original post and the low-magic vs. high-magic debate. Don't take the posts too personally. People get passionate about certain topics on various message boards. The debate of low-magic vs. high-magic is one such topic that pops up on...

    Character Creation Time?

It depends on the characters' intended purpose. If we are talking about a character I intend to play (which doesn't really ever happen) or an important NPC; It takes around an hour (including basic background brainstorming and designing a basic feat chain that will allow me the abilities and...

Limited magic campaign......has never failed yet!

It's likely an agree to disagree situation, but being that this is a forum for discussion... lets talk about it a little. It occurs to me that maybe for a decent "low magic" setting to be successful some new game mechanics need to replace some of the 'options' that have been eliminated by...

Limited magic campaign......has never failed yet!

I didn't really read "personal attack" when I quoted that message. My bad. My argument stands, but was in no way meant as a personal slight. As I said, lots of people with a great deal of knowledge of the game have trouble with high level play regardless of the prevelance of magic. They prefer...

Limited magic campaign......has never failed yet!

I love low magic settings, but I have to agree with Saeviomagy. Standard D&D, high magic settings, and even epic level play can all be a blast to play (with plenty of excellent role playing opportunities and difficult scenarios for players to work through) if you know how to run them. Judging...

What's this about a plagiarized map in Conan: City of Shadizar?

Wasn't there just a similar case to this a few weeks ago surrounding artwork for a D20 Future setting? Odd that we hear of another case so soon. I guess unscroupulous freelancers (be they artists or whatever) aren't as uncommon as we would like to think they are. I can draw, and I like to...

D&D 3.x D&D 3.0/3.5 Character Sheets: What do you use?

Please, feel free. And, if you think of it, send me what you work up. I love to look at other people's concepts for character sheets. Like I said... I make character sheets all the time, and a lot of the elements I've come up with from various sheets have been inspired by sheets done by others...

Limited magic campaign......has never failed yet!

It seems to me that there is a faction of people who enjoy 'low magic' settings, although their definitions of low magic are quite varied, and there is obviously a great number of people who don't like such settings (as is evident from the anti-low magic posts that quickly flood most threads...
