    D&D 5E (2014) The Gloves Are Off?

I have no doubt that your players will not budge, no matter what. So out pure of curiosity here: 5e is actually a deceptively decently complex game once you get in to the different classes with their associated little subsystems like sorcerers points... but 5e is essentially Stat + Mod + d20...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Gloves Are Off?

Smacks of a whining player trying to claim 'backsies'. Just pure 'But, but, but,...' logical pleading trying to emotionally blackmail the GM so that they don't do anything bad to their precious PC. There are no backsies in RPG land for character actions. "I imagine my character is wearing...

D&D General Hot Take: D&D Has Not Recovered From 2E to 3.0 Transition

Being outsold by a clone of the previous edition was an unacceptable situation - even though they were only getting outsold by a little bit. D&D outsells its nearest competitors by orders of magnitude. It is not a first among equals RPG IP.

D&D General Hot Take: D&D Has Not Recovered From 2E to 3.0 Transition

In my personal experience much of that has to do with a lot of managers largely having never having actually worked in the departments that they are put in charge of. (Lots of lateral moves of people with finance and business management degrees...) Modern Corporations also do not value...

D&D General Hot Take: D&D Has Not Recovered From 2E to 3.0 Transition

For Corporations, just being profitable isn't enough sometimes as well. I'm fairly positive that Hasbro had set certain ROI thresholds. And if their 'opportunity cost' thresholds were not met - they pull the plug based on the idea that they could make 'more money' investing in something else.

D&D General Hot Take: D&D Has Not Recovered From 2E to 3.0 Transition

Agree with the hot take, but I feel your breakdown misses some fundamental issues: 1- The Abandonment of Morale rules had a profound impact on combat in the game - as well as tying XP to mostly monster killing. 2- The Abandonment of Hit Dice limits - after 9hd you got a static +1, +2 or +3 hps...

    D&D General “Folk” D&D vs. “Official” D&D

IMO; Potaoto, potahto; who was at the WW helm is a side show - it said WW on the tin, and it happened. #2 game run down into irrelevance. Same with all the non-D&D hobby big names from the 90's. Almost all those companies either went under, changed hands, or are shells of what they used to be...

    D&D General “Folk” D&D vs. “Official” D&D

Another hard disagree. I still don't want to derail the thread - feel free to PM if you want a spirited debate.

    D&D General “Folk” D&D vs. “Official” D&D

It is quite impressive when looked at in hindsight. They took the perennial #2 RPG company in the world, and reduced it to a company catering to the few remaining faithful thru kickstarter...

    D&D General “Folk” D&D vs. “Official” D&D

I disagree. Corporations are state created entities given special liability protections that small mom and pop businesses do not enjoy; insulating themselves from many of the effects of market forces, and thus very anti-capitalist. But I suspect we define certain terms very differently, and...

    D&D General “Folk” D&D vs. “Official” D&D

That's Corporatism. A very different thing... In Gygax's defense; even he was taken aback by the demand for campaign settings and Lore. Which is why he finally did Greyhawk. There is, and will always be, a subset of the hobby that very much does want the RPG company to do their imagining for...

WotC Hasbro Bets Big on D&D

Well, that's the kicker. Like I said; the corporate-speak is strong. They are not going to spell it out for you. People seem to be hanging their hat on her word choice when she says that the "D&D as a BRAND is under-monetized." In spite of having the audio linked with a time stamp to go to -...

WotC Hasbro Bets Big on D&D

In my opinion; The repeated referencing of the single "under monetized" quote is a red herring - distracting from what the real discussion should be about. The real talking point is when she goes on to say the following* after referencing the buyout of D&DBeyond: Miss Williams At 34:08 in...

WotC Hasbro Bets Big on D&D

Letting the licenses lapse and not renewing them when they come up is also another tactic I see WotC using. I do not believe that people previous purchases will be deleted from FG or R20. But eventually, access to DnD Beyond stuff will be cut off unless you are on the OneVTT. I expect any...

D&D 5E (2014) Great Weapon Fighting Style *Fix*

I'd keep it as simple as possible. Roll Advantage for damage. Done as part of the damage roll, and less mathy as you are just looking for the bigger number. Quick and clean during actual play, and gives the PC a tangible benefit.

WotC Hasbro Bets Big on D&D

I rate this a 4 out of10 on the attempted 'gotcha' scale. Nice try at a smear by association with the link, but as my actual quote does not contain any of the pet phrases, you ultimately fell short at your attempt to put words in my mouth. Do better. If people continue to see the whole thing...

WotC Hasbro Bets Big on D&D

One VTT is not an MMO. But WotC will be the one that makes the final decision on what's allowed in the OneVTT ecosystem. If the negative effects of microtransactions on the wider play culture in other gaming media that people have repeatedly brought up in this thread have not registered...

    Modiphius' Conan TTRPG Is Ending

The law needs to be changed then. But unlikely given that the trademark holder of public domain IP names and Characters can pour more lobbying dollars into pockets than independent creators. So "trademark infringement" bullying for the win then...

    Modiphius' Conan TTRPG Is Ending

If an IP is in public domain - you shouldn't have to use different names. The idea that trademarks based on IP that has entered public domain can still tell someone what to call a character needs to be challenged for this reason. It is likely a conflict that lawmakers did not see coming, but...

WotC Hasbro Bets Big on D&D

Will OneVTT effect you and your table? No. Will the OneVTT ecosystem have an effect on the wider 'official' WotC D&D culture of play? That is obvious. The only thing left to debate is what kind of effect it will have. Granted, until we see the implementation it is mostly speculation. But...
