D&D 5E (2014) Are you coming back to D&D from another GAME SYSTEM? (theoretically?)

I'll definitely be dragging in storygame elements from the likes of Burning Wheel, FATE and Dungeon World. Of those, I've only actually played BW, but I have great respect for the innovations all of those indie games have made with RPG mechanics. Compels in D&D? Hell yes.

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 6/16/14

Story bibles and world bibles are development tools. They're common in the development of narrative-heavy videogames as well. They're not designed for public consumption in that form.

    D&D 5E (2014) Pages from the PHB

No offense, but it sounds like your DM was a little lacking in imagination. Perhaps not only your DM.

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 6/16/14

Actually he says: "We were so pleased with Kobold Press's work that you'll see more collaborations between the R&D team and RPG studios in the future." Which suggests that they're working with multiple unspecified studios. It seems likely that they will work with KP again, but it will be...

    D&D 5E (2014) Pre-Ordering 5E on Amazon - Help Needed

Hmm - the books are on Book Depository, but are listed as "currently unavailable" and don't have prices. It is indeed worth keeping an eye on, though.

    D&D 5E (2014) Pre-Ordering 5E on Amazon - Help Needed

Ah, I just noticed you guys aren't including Rise of Tiamat. For all six, it's telling me US$192.64 and five shipments minimum. Weird that it's grouping yours into three batches rather than four. Note that I put in my my order a couple of weeks back, so prices may have fluctuated since then...

    D&D 5E (2014) Pre-Ordering 5E on Amazon - Help Needed

I'm also in Australia and ordered from Amazon. I found the opposite to samurus - the total price was $10 or so lower when I threw everything into one big order (as opposed to five orders). I've got "ship in fewest shipments" selected, but it still seems to be telling me that the order will be...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 6/16/14

I have no particular interest in either the MMO or the minis, but this is such a smart approach from Wizards, and I'm totally on-board for ToD now. There are only a small number of nerds who will get excited about a new rules release, but you can sell a good story to anyone. I'm also not in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Random Starter Set Teaser from Google+

Because we've all grown up a bit and realised that character > math?

D&D 5E (2014) Can an elf rogue be a decent archer in (Basic) D&D 5th edition?

Don't worry, I'm under no illusions that anyone is ever going to win this argument. This is a D&D forum, after all. Your very blinkered view of game design irritates me, that's all.

I hate to say it, but Ruin Explorer is talking sense in this thread. I essentially agree with all that, but I'm not in the least bothered by a single result in the Wild Magic table tying into alignment in a way that would usually be counter-productive. If it fits anywhere, it fits here. And I...

D&D 5E (2014) Can an elf rogue be a decent archer in (Basic) D&D 5th edition?

Haha, well it must be a terrible misunderstanding that allows me to run a videogame company and teach courses on Advanced Game Design! Of course I'm exaggerating some of my points for effect, but trying to talk game design to you feels like trying to carry on a conversation while trapped inside...

D&D 5E (2014) Can an elf rogue be a decent archer in (Basic) D&D 5th edition?

No measurement is useful in isolation for measuring balance. The only way to balance a game is get it feeling right at the table, and the only way to do that is through sufficient playtesting. Period.

D&D 5E (2014) Can an elf rogue be a decent archer in (Basic) D&D 5th edition?

Well said, Mistwell. Stats only tell you what they tell you, and nothing that they don't. As the expression goes: "There's three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics".

D&D 5E (2014) Can an elf rogue be a decent archer in (Basic) D&D 5th edition?

And I think YOU'RE missing the point, because the OP's question was about the feasibility of an archer rogue in play. In that regard, the posters who gave actual play reports of archer rogues doing well are worth more than all the DPR analysis in the kingdom. Because even if many of the factors...

D&D 5E (2014) Can an elf rogue be a decent archer in (Basic) D&D 5th edition?

Unquantifiable factors are still relevant (and become quantifiable with enough testing (which WotC have done).

    D&D 5E (2014) Live Dungeons & Dragons Q&A Friday, June 6 Question Thread

@Olfan: Your question isn't about the Starter Set/Basic Rules. A suggested rephrase: How much high level play testing and number tweaking was done? Will the DM's rules in Basic have any suggestions on how to challenge high level characters? (Or will that be something that's addressed later in...

D&D 5E (2014) Can an elf rogue be a decent archer in (Basic) D&D 5th edition?

Not arguing with specifics, but you're getting my point - a rogue archer can shine if they play to the rogue's overall strengths. Yes, they have to be more creative to have the impact a fighter gets by just headbutting people. But that's totally true to the archetypes, right?

    D&D 5E (2014) Pages from the PHB

@Thaumaturge: Agreed on the art. The PHB features a female character front and centre, and she's both lacking in excessive curves and appropriately dressed! The warlock likewise, but she also has some freaky character going on.

    D&D 5E (2014) Pages from the PHB

@Paraxis: This is exactly what I'm saying: the system is designed to support user-modification, so it's not failing if a user needs to modify it to suit their needs. The designers have finally realised that there is no set of rules that are going to perfectly please everyone, and so they are...
