    D&D 5E (2014) Blog Post by Robert J. Schwalb

So because one thing (let's call it "the Tool") informs a second thing (which we'll call "the Entire Point"), then we should care more about the Tool than the Entire Point? I don't see how that makes any sense.

    D&D 5E (2014) Weak Saving Throws

Well, to me that's a nonsense in the context of an RPG. YMMV.

    D&D 5E (2014) Starter Set Resting

It just depends whether you're a "glass rounded up" or "glass rounded down" kinda guy. Edit: the last playtest packet I have (September) specifies that you round up in this situation. Probably just an omission in the final rules (or just the SS). No biggie.

    D&D 5E (2014) Weak Saving Throws

Storm, meet Teacup. Here's my Devil advocate position: PCs being weak on certain saves is GREAT. It gives them more opportunities to get BEATEN DOWN, and PROTAGONIST FAILURE is where DRAMA comes from. It's only a problem if you're obsessed with the PCs winning all the time, and stuck in the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Blog Post by Robert J. Schwalb

The more you try to make a role-playing game unbreakable, the more certain people will push and push at it until they find a way to break it, and then that metagame (to a great degree) actually becomes the game for them. But if you just say "whatever, go ahead and break it. But it's kind of easy...

    D&D 5E (2014) Blog Post by Robert J. Schwalb

Well, we see things differently. Seems to me a lot of folks around here are much more interested in playing with (and complaining about) numbers than adventures or storytelling.

    No worries. Apologies.

D&D 5E (2014) Starter set being shipped early in Canada

Yeah, I could probably get it earlier in-store, but it would be more expensive, plus I'm moving to a more remote area next week, without any game shops. It's okay - I'll live =)

D&D 5E (2014) Starter set being shipped early in Canada

In the phandelver play-through, the goblins keep hiding after they've attacked. That's their ability.

    D&D 5E (2014) Blog Post by Robert J. Schwalb

Indeed. The trouble is when people treat it as the reverse. And when the rules are as strongly emphasised as they are in 3E and 4E, that's tacit support for that approach.

You and I can do that, and come up with new background details. But I'm curious what their advice is for new players.

I'm pretty sure they would have been more helpful in a more casual setting. Being broadcast live can be very distracting, I'm sure.

None of that has anything remotely to do with what he said. But if it puts people like you guys off the edition, that's not such a big loss.

Multiclassing will be marked as optional in the PHB, so no house ruling necessary. But it wouldn't matter if it was necessary, because 5E actively encourages modding to suit your individual needs.

    D&D 5E (2014) Blog Post by Robert J. Schwalb

Totally down with everything Rob is saying. It's not that no-one will be able to min-max in 5E. But if it turns out to be way more fun to create a character with interesting limitations and quicker and simpler to get playing, then why would most people bother? Sure, some people will continue to...

D&D 5E (2014) Starter set being shipped early in Canada

I have a question for those who've already received the set: Are there any guidelines for what to do if a PC dies during the adventure? It's a reasonable possibility, given the low hp they start with and the swinginess of crits. In fact, Greg Bilsland mentions in the Phandelver play-through...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Livestream: Lost Mine of Phandelve Todayr 4 PM PT

I was going to say something similar ;) Actually, I thought the fighters weren't going to remember that they even had the ability. The Noble only did so in the nick of time. Have just finished watching, and found it enjoyable. As others said, the mix of male/female and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Roll20.net character sheet for 5e

Ah, just watching the live play-through of Lost Mine of Phandelver, and Greg Bilsland mentioned that there is a space to record a faction on the optional third page of the official sheet. All three sheets will show up in Basic on the 3rd. He also mentions that they've added a little box to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Roll20.net character sheet for 5e

It's primarily an organised play thing, but there are guidelines for them in the DMG. This was stated by Mike sometime in the last couple of weeks, although I forget exactly where.
