Dragonlance "The Women of Dragonlance" -- Larry Elmore's New Dragonlance Painting

The thing that folks that write-off digital media seem to not understand is that you cannot make these images without that same skill set as a traditional painter. All of the color decisions, composition, etc, is 100% the artist. The big upside of digital is that it's faster and cleaner but guys...

D&D General How far from the source can we stray?

People loved Finding Nemo. You don't need humans at all to tell a human story. You certainly don't need humans with pointed ears or humans with beards.

Dragonlance "The Women of Dragonlance" -- Larry Elmore's New Dragonlance Painting

I guarantee you that Elmore's stuff would still look like a group of average folks posing for a photo in their cosplay if he was a fresh 30 year old working in digital medium. All of the color decisions, composition, naturalistic rendering, etc, is the artist. There's no magic button that you...

Dragonlance "The Women of Dragonlance" -- Larry Elmore's New Dragonlance Painting

Vallejo was THE fantasy artist to me, as a kid. Brom was the best in 2e. WAR has been one of my favorites since 3.5 but I feel like we have guys like Tyler Jacobson in the game now who are blowing away pretty much all of those old 2e guys. Just the technical level of contrast, color, lighting...

    D&D General Alternate "Ability Scores"

Before 4e or Numerera came out, I had been thinking about homebrewing a 3.5 system where Fort, Will, and Reflex were the only ability scores and everything keyed off of that. After seeing how it turned out in Numenera, I'm not sold on it, 100%. I'd still miss Con and Str being different, etc...

    D&D 5E (2014) Abusing Tasha's racial proficiency swaps

As someone who started building a character before realizing that I now get a pile of tool profs, I have to admit that you have to work really hard with the DM to make them relevant, outside of a couple like Thieve's Tools. I can imagine giving a character every tool kit prof in the PHB and not...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's wrong with this psion?

The version and mechanical particulars of psionics are an issue that is orthogonal to my point that the sci-fi arugment doesn't mean anything within the context of Dnd's origins.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's wrong with this psion?

Sure, the official mods set the official setting don't exist unless the DM chooses but that has no bearing on whether the creators and genesis of DnD involved sci-fi pieces.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's wrong with this psion?

I seem to remember plenty of the mods with futuristic stuff being released after the game came out. Sci-fi was a basic theme employed by the creators of the game themselves. Only later did we have ironic claims that there was no place for it in the game.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's wrong with this psion?

Blackmoore, one of the first DnD settings, was a post-apocalyptic world with super futuristic technology and in the past, waiting to be uncovered. Gygax ran DnD games where players visited the old west and spaceships. At some point, we had a weird phenomenon where some people wanted "pure" DnD...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you restrict racial choices in your games?

I build a default setting with a certain set of races in mind, but I'm open to players coming up with some world building lore if they want something off-menu. I'd never bother to incorporate halflings in a base world, for instance, but if you really wanted to run one we could come up with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

This point, what I'd really like to see out of DnD character generation is 3 part: Ability Scores Point buy, with enough points to build what you used to be able to, after racial mods. No racial, class, or lineage bonuses here at chargen. You can be the super cliche elf that Dnd has always had...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

The claim was that they somehow broke a promise though, which is completely false, since they haven't gone back on anything. The Tasha's option applies to existing races and remains completely optional while the new races don't require that you pick up Tasha's or look at it's rules, they're just...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

I see you spending a lot of time spinning your wheels on this example. What you're talking about has absolutely nothing to do with character building mechanics and everything to do with players wanting a thing that forces other people to submit. What if two players want to be the world's only...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

The fact that this is the way they plan on doing race going forward is hopeful. Character building it going to need a full reboot to be done correctly but having unique racial powers be "lineage," all of the skills and cultural stuff be "background," and letting bland math modifiers be a...

D&D General Do genes exist in D&D?

In Dnd land, a lot of things only exist because of magic. DNA probably exists, but it doesn't mean a whole lot in the big picture of diversity.
