D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Regardless of whether or not you use feats at your home table, humans are chosen as power gaming option in lieu of fantasy races. Regular old variant human IS the "bonus power-up" thing you're bemoaning and they're no more or less optional than the bird guy or turtle man. Mountain dwarf doesn't...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Dwarves and elves are human characters with beards or pointed ears. I play a human in real life, so if I'm playing a fantasy game with magic, alternate dimensions, dragons, etc, just playing a bearded human or pointy-eared human is like making effort to travel to the bar for a drink and ordering...

D&D 5E (2014) Are there any races post-tashas that compare with mountain dwarf for casters?

Yeah, i figured there were ways to get crazy amounts if I was actually chasing that. The thing is that you're usually pretty much set after around 4 though. Thieves tools, a couple of crafting sets, and maybe an instrument for flavor, and you can cover most of any practical need most characters...

D&D 5E (2014) Are there any races post-tashas that compare with mountain dwarf for casters?

IDK about mountain dwarf for armor on a wizard, but I just built a duergar fighter for the RotF campaign and I was giggling when I realized that I got 4 free tool proficiencies without losing anything by swapping out all of my BS racial weapon profs. Between base dwarf, background, and optional...

Tasha's Cauldron of Everything: An In-Depth Review

They definitely seem a lot more conservative about doing different things and experimenting. Previously, they got into the more interesting outside-of-the-box stuff later in the edition's life cycle and it provided us with some really fresh options. Incarnum, Tome of Magic, Tome of Battle, et...

Tasha's Cauldron of Everything: An In-Depth Review

I have to assume that anyone claiming "bloat" after the second player option book in 6 years is throwing out some heavy, heavy, heavy sarcasm.

D&D 5E (2014) Investment of the Chain Master: Sprite is the new Imp?

The gazer familiar doesn't work at all with the new invocation. The invocation specifically states, "when you cast find familiar" and the gazer cannot be gained through the find familiar spell. The sprite is still and interesting option though.

D&D 5E (2014) So what variant features from Tasha’s are you planning to use?

I'm going to use the racial feature swap on pretty much every character I ever make at this point. Giving a "warrior" race features that are superfluous for a "warrior" class build always struck me as clunky design.

D&D 5E (2014) My Quick and Dirty Tasha Read

This is why I don't understand some folks tearing out their hair over tweaking the race mechanics. An elf wizard and an elf fighter PC had a boatload of mechanical differences before, but there are people acting like an elf starting with Con 16 instead of Con 14 completely destroys some mythical...

D&D 5E (2014) My Favorite Player Options From Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything

I just want to a duergar rune knight that becomes large and then the uses enlargement to become huge. 17th level = full kaiju mode.

D&D 5E (2014) New D&D WotC survey asks if you read ENWORLD!

Aren't most published worlds originally someone's homebrew? I feel like the difference is whether you're making an Eberron book with a bunch of lore or a more setting agnostic book like Xanathar's. I'd rather have more options and tools for my homebrew than a big book of Wildemount lore that I...

D&D 5E (2014) New D&D WotC survey asks if you read ENWORLD!

"Would you recommend D&D?" "Why?" Because I can't play the game if I don't convince other people to play with me.

    D&D 5E (2014) Tasha’s cauldron character thread

I felt like 4e got it right with 5 minute short rests. You cannot refresh the abilities the middle of a combat, but it gave a clear delineation between times when you completely put adventuring on hold and when you just catch a breather. I've seen too many tables where short rest characters are...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tasha’s cauldron character thread

I'm really hating how they're turning towards "X per long rest" as the go-to mechanic. I'd much rather things generally revolve around per-encounter balance.

    D&D 5E (2014) Exotic Mounts

In a fantasy world, you have a vast variety of creatures that don't exist in real life. I'm not sure why a fictitious drake or made-up dog breed couldn't make as good of a mount as a horse. There's 193,043 humanoids that are ostensibly non-human, so why can't a giant dragon have a rider?

    D&D 5E (2014) Exotic Mounts

Not just a resource for mounts, but I was surprised to find that the old 3e Arms and Equipment guide uses a gold standard that's nearly identical to that of 5e. Note that some of the items listed there are in the 5e PHB at the exact same cost. It would be a good starting point for exotic mount...

D&D General The Elven Empire that never was, yet has an Imperial Fleet, the LeShay, and the Elven homeworld

This kinda stuff reminds me that Spelljammer is the coolest form of DnD.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's wrong with this psion?

I don't like spell slots compared to the broad variety of other systems that games use and I was looking forward to a full "casting" class that didn't have to use them. I'm also weary of 5 players sitting down the that table and using the exact same spells with the exact same spell slot...

    D&D 5E (2014) Psionics in Tasha

Remember when they made powers from every class work the same in 4e and the community flipped their naughty word over everything working the same way? Even in 4e, psionics worked differently from the rest of the classes. The fact that literally every class in the game goes back to the same spell...
