How much do you mix genres in your game?

I thought a lot more people would have voted for highly mixed genres, so I'm pretty surprised then that a lot of the new stuff coming out is so genre-mixed. When I look at the illustrations for the new campaign sourcebooks, I see all this machinery and steam pumping and balloons and whatnot. I...

How much do you mix genres in your game?

It's hard to say. I guess choice #4 would be just out-of-this-world crazy stuff or just mixing more than two or three genres. Like say, another example would be: "My halfling detective crime-fighting rogue just found out his brother is the robotic vampire hiding in that gothic-style glass city!"

How much do you mix genres in your game?

From what I understand, D&D had its origins as primarily a strategy war game which added an adventuring element that was also accompanied by some science fiction-inspired magic. I know that one of the earliest adventures S3 "Expedition to the Barrier Peaks" was largely science fiction-oriented...

A sole product I'd love to see.

If done properly, these could be good intros to the game for people who are not familiar with D&D. They could be kind of like "D&D lite" in the style of "Choose Your Own Adventure". For example, it could have a pre-made PC with all their stats, equipment, and personality listed in an...

How to Handle a "Character Switcher"?

Sounds like you just need a new player.

$1000 Where would you put yours?

I'd either spend it all on miniatures or OD&D, AD&D, and JG stuff. I might also buy a few new d20/D&D items like: Swashbuckler Nyambe Necropolis Spycraft Call of Cthulu Arthur Pendragon Scarred Lands Everquest Lord of the Rings Star Wars Monster Manual II Epic Level Handbook (why not?)...

The artwork in the Book of Vile Darkness

I haven't seen the Book of Vile Darkness yet, so I can't say what my opinion is. But I just wanted to know why people complain so much about the art in 3rd edition. Has it always been like this or has the art gotten worse? Personally, I prefer the art in previous editions. A lot of the art...

    Getting your name "out there"

How do you companies get a distribution deal anyhow? Do you print out 50 copies and show them at GAMA and whatnot and hope for a distributor like Alliance to come by and pick your products up? Or do you send distributors PDF's and hope they pick them up before going to print? How many of you...

    Compensation for Artists

I still don't have any idea what the compensation range is like.

Is going d20 really worth it?

Thanks, everybody, especially Henry for clarifying the legal reasons! All of this is very interesting. I wonder how many d20 companies keep a lawyer on retainer and if so, how do you find an IP lawyer who would be knowledgable on all this??? It seems complicated and yet simple in some ways...

    Compensation for Artists

I am interested in knowing more about average compensation rates on for artists. I know it's like asking how much the average doctor makes (it varies!), but I guess I'd like to get an idea what the pay ranges would be for a talented amateur, semi-professional, and professional artist. For...

Is going d20 really worth it?

So did LOTR and EQ use the SRD or not? It seems like they don't legally need to. WOTC/Hasbro cannot copyright game mechanics from what I understand. The whole thing seems so tricky in many ways. Like once you go d20 you have to depend on WOTC/Hasbro to continue updating and adding to the SRD.

    Counters for combat grids

Well then! I have to get it now! I need more NPC's though, Klaus! More! Like peasant farmers, barmaids, and merchants!Okay, so these types are not in combat often, but sometimes they are! And what about footmen? More humans, Klaus, more! Anyhow, I will definitely pick up Counter Pack...

    OT: This is very cute!

Yep, my thoughts exactly. :) Oh yeah, and the giant does like a happy psychotic dad beating up on his children. Anyhow, hope you enjoyed it! It's amazing how many different facets of life fantasy role-playing can touch... :)

Is going d20 really worth it?

By the way, I'm not a publisher, just curious about the system. Anyhow, I don't know why you even need the SRD if game mechanics cannot be copyrighted. Is the Lord of the Rings RPG using the SRD? What about the Everquest RPG? It seems the companies that printed these games used a lot of...

If there was one thing about 3rdE that you could change, what would it be?

This is not so much about 3e, but more D&D in general. I'd give spell-casters less powerful magic but more hit points. In other words, let them engage in melee more than just standing back and casting spells. After all, Gandalf who is the prototype for many wizard-types (although I think he...

What is more important author or company and would you pay more????

But of course, I'm more likely to take a look at something written by someone I like than someone I don't recognize. That doesn't mean I'll necessarily buy it however. But I will give it a closer look! So, authors DO matter...

What is more important author or company and would you pay more????

It depends on the particular author and company, but I would have to lean more towards company. This is because I've seen products by the same author written for different companies and you can see the difference in style, packaging, and editing in terms of quality and presentation. Some...

Is going d20 really worth it?

Forgive me if I sound pretty ignorant (because indeed I am of this issue), but I'm curious to know if the d20 logo is really worth all that for you companies to forgo the freedom of going OGL. I mean you can pretty much do anything you want besides plagiarism if you go OGL: discuss character...
