    Powered by Apocalypse

if someone asked me what PbtA game I’d choose to play, then first on my list would be City of Mist because I like it’s free form “playbook” creation rules and urban fantasy setting. I think the second in my list would be Urban Shadows, again for urban fantasy and also world of darkness vibe.

The Warhammer Fantasy Role Play Starter Set Is A Great Gateway Into A Grim Game

I agree about the influence. A game that has Men, Dwarves, Elves (both Wood and High) and Hobbits... I mean Halflings as the primary species for characters is absolutely wearing Tolkien's influence on its sleeve.

The Warhammer Fantasy Role Play Starter Set Is A Great Gateway Into A Grim Game

Lord of the Rings is perceived as shiny and light because the story ends with Sauron overthrown and the beginning of a new age, despite the hardships the Fellowship suffered leading up to the beginning of the 4th Age. Warhammer Fantasy Role Play does not have such a happy ending, with the...

The Warhammer Fantasy Role Play Starter Set Is A Great Gateway Into A Grim Game

WFRP 4E character generation is no longer only random. You start by rolling, and if you accept the rolls you get extra XP. But you can always choose not to accept the rolls and just select your career/race/characteristics.

The Warhammer Fantasy Role Play Starter Set Is A Great Gateway Into A Grim Game

I love Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. I think it's the best fantasy roleplaying game. But I've always thought there was something better out there so only purchased the core book for 4E while looking for that "better" game. But recently I realized that I was a fool, and have committed myself to...

Warhammer: Age of Sigmar: Soulbound: Starter Set PDF Coming Monday

I too was puzzled at the move. My initial reaction to AOS was "Oh, its WH40K Space Marines ported over to a post-apocalyptic Old World" and dismissed it. My beloved WFRP was discarded and I didn't want anything to do with its replacement. But the roleplaying game has changed my mind. The...

Opinions on Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4ed?

I really like the changes made to character advancement that allow a character to remain in their current career but still advance. I like how 4th edition brought back the classes from 1E. I like how skills and characteristics both allow advancement. I like how social class is built into the...

    Plant-based races

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Soulbound have the Sylvaneth - "beings of nature, creatures of life magic whose flesh and sinew are crafted from the living boughs of the wyldwood".

"Family-friendly" version of SotDL gets Re-Named

Could have used “Wild Wizard”. Then it would also serve as a synonym of “mad” as in angry.

How do you feel about learning new rule systems?

Now? At my age which is... ahhh, 21, yes, 21. I hate it. Too many new things to remember and likely the rules aren't presented in a coherent manner...... unless the game somehow makes me want to read it e.g. Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound.

    LotFP in financial dire straights?

Oooo! My first RPG was red box D&D.... but then I recall the reasons why AD&D overtook B/X (at least in my eyes) so my interest went away. Perhaps something to get when nostalgia hits me again.

    Good fantasy reads?

Memory, Sorrow and Thorn, a trilogy by Tad Williams (The Dragonbone Chair, Stone of Farewell, and To Green Angel Tower).

Warhammer's Age of Sigmar: Soulbound Is Here!

I was not planning on buying this. But apparently I had other ideas and went behind my own back to purchase it, both PDF + pre-order hard-copy. It indeed is metal. But doesn't replace the love I have for WFRP.

    Dungeon World

The way I see it is that the Players are rolling dice for both their character and the opposition. Either they succeed or their opposition does (or both manage to ding each other). A single dice roll rather than two (or 4 if a system has resistance/dodge rolls).

Cubicle 7 No Longer Producing The One Ring and Adventures in Middle Earth

Ahem. For 15 years MERP was the Number One Lord of the Rings roleplaying game*. TOR has a few years to go before it knocks MERP from that perch.... ;) Ah but I joke. TOR is definitely the better system. I would play TOR over MERP any day. But at the time of MERP, I preferred it over the...

Cubicle 7 No Longer Producing The One Ring and Adventures in Middle Earth

To add to the post by @JeffB, MERP had two editions and, according to wikipedia, ICE was working on a 3rd edition before they lost the licence. ICE also release a CCG and an introductory rpg with the Intellectual Property. MERP may not be the best ruleset for LotR, but ICE supported the IP for...

Why Do You Hate An RPG System?

I can dislike systems for various reasons. I like systems to be able to produce reasonably balanced characters so systems/games that don't do this I dislike e.g. RIFTs. Some systems can be overly complicated. I'm sure some games released in the nineties would fit into this category. Also...
