Exactly how important is it to start the game with a +3 ability score modifier?

Personally, I would not build a character that does not start with +3 in their primary stat, unless the concept absolutely does not work without a particular race/class combo, and even then, I'd take a hard look at the concept to see if it's worth it. The way 5e's ability score increases work...

Adventurers' League and the Hermit's Discovery

Since discoveries don't provide mechanical advantage in AL (unless your DM wants to give you advantage for suitable situations occasionally), you can make it whatever you want. You can use metagame knowledge to create discoveries that fit particular adventures/storylines e.g. "A vampire named...

That player in the back of the room

D&D is a cooperative game, and organized play even more so. Someone who doesn't help the party complete their objectives as a general rule is being selfish and acting disruptive to the game. "That's what my character would do" is not a valid excuse for disrupting the game, and not assisting in...

Have we failed to discourage min-maxing?

I would love to see more noncombat ways to resolve problems in AL adventures, but I would hate to see adventures where you'd simply fail or get overwhelmed without certain noncombat abilities. AL is focused around public play with players who frequently don't know each other, so it's very easy...

    D&D 5E (2014) Aid Spell and Wildshape

Wild Shape doesn't end any magical or other effects that still apply to you. If a cleric casts Bless on you and you Wild Shape, you retain the Bless. There's no reason why the same wouldn't be true of Aid.

What is the ceiling on playing a habitual liar in Adventure League?

Just note that you can't be Lawful Evil and join the Order of the Gauntlet. Lawful Evil is only permitted with Lord's Alliance or Zhentarim members. That said, there's nothing stopping you from claiming that you're a member of the Order of the Gauntlet to other players, but the DM has to know...

D&D 5E (2014) Great Weapon Fighting and damage dice from other sources

GWF is pretty disappointing if it doesn't apply to additional damage dice, since even for greatsword/maul it adds less than +2 damage per hit on average. It's an interesting and useful fighting style when it works with extra dice, and it's a mediocre and semi-useless option when it doesn't, so I...

New DM Quest Rewards available on DM's Guild

Wow. I've been annoyed by a lot of the AL changes lately, but this is just excellent. I love the incentive structure here, and it makes me excited to DM again. I now want to run all of the DDALs and the hardcover for season 4, whereas before I strongly considered not running a single DDAL and...

    Season 4 Pregens?

When will we get pregens for season 4? Our store is running out of them, and I would love to have some new ones that aren't genasi or related so deeply to Hillsfar.

DM only thread: In game use of Items (obviously Spoilers)

Magic items can certainly tip the balance of the game in the players' favor, and lack of them can do the opposite (mostly when players don't have magical weapons against resistant enemies). Most of the time, minor magic items (+1 weapons and such) won't affect balance a great amount, but certain...

Find Familiar - Before First AL Adventure?

There are precious few adventures where you can't just say "I spend an hour after waking up to cast Find Familiar" at the very start.

D&D Adventurer's League vs. Pathfinder Society

5e's DCs are drastically different from 3.x/PF's, due to the flat math in 5e. In 5e, DC 10 = easy, DC 15 = average, and DC 20 = hard, and that doesn't really change at higher levels. So a high level rogue who focuses on skills in 5e will find a lot of checks very easy to accomplish, rather than...

D&D Adventurer's League vs. Pathfinder Society

That's... not really an example of powergaming. Archery is just designed that way in 5e. All you have to do is pick the Archery combat style as a fighter at level 1, and have a high Dex, and you automatically have +7 to hit. It's difficult not having such a high attack if you're playing an...

Build-wise, what's far too common in the AL?

I see way too many Great Weapon Master fighters, barbarians, and paladins, as well as Sharpshooter rangers and fighters. Those feats are just too good and make their fighting styles too much better than other styles.

Things to do with Downtime Days

About a quarter of AL adventures published so far have spellbooks, and there are scrolls in nearly every adventure. More importantly, as a wizard, all you have to do is play with another wizard once and you'll have more spells available than you can even copy.

[SPOILERS] Some thoughts on the Author Only mods from Winter Fantasy

I played Mearls's AO (which didn't have a name) at WF and it was an amazing experience, but I doubt it would work if ran by anyone else. At the time, the adventure was written only insofar as he had listed some areas and factions that can be involved. He improvised a lot of the adventure and...

    D&D 5E (2014) [Out of the Abyss]Magic item distribution?

Your choice. +1 weapons don't require attunement, and this is comparable. Either way is fine.

    D&D 5E (2014) [Out of the Abyss]Magic item distribution?

You know Green-Flame Blade while holding the mace, and you must attack with the mace if you use it. It uses your highest mental ability as its casting attribute, and deals an extra 1 fire damage to both the primary and secondary targets when used that way. If you simply use it as a mace without...
