    Mind Flayers & related monsters

Here's a second vote for these-- the Embrac, Saltor, Kirgid, &c &c... I've thought about introducing Illithids IMC by having one or two of these show up in the remoter wilderness, and sending the PCs out to investigate... Also, the Aboleth seems to fit right in, and to that I'l add the Amiskwa...

    Fey - the little people

For "little" fey, the sprites, a la Fantasia, is what pops up first... Otherwise, if you say "Fey" to me I immediately think of the Sidhe...

    Prehistoric Animals

I'll have to second the Indricothere-- just 'cause I think thry're cool... If I'm shivering in the snow out on the street during a cigarette break at work in winter, I sometimes imagine what it would be like if a herd of Mammoths would walk down the streets of Philadelphia... Smilodon fatalis...

Formation of an *Elaborate* Plan: Your Advice/Ideas, Please!!

Your entry into high society... Instead of those 500 gp that country mayors are always giving out for someone to defeat the goblins, or whatever, ask for a letter of introduction to someone in the court circles. It need not be to the King himself-- any noble who may spend time at court would...

Tournament of Champions in recent Dungeon

Credit where it's due, and you're more than welcome! I, for one, would like it if Paizo would consider adding to the Dragon CD-Rom archive-- I'm missing a few of the Monster Hunter Adventures! Alas, it's probably not cost-effective (yet) for them to do this.Maybe sometime around issue 450...

[World building] Ecology, real and magical

Just off the top of my head: The growing season is shorter, so agriculture would be less important, perhaps, than hunting or herding. In more northern latitudes, herders may concentrate on reindeer, like the Lapps in the real world. Great herds of caribou... followed closely in the winter...

Tournament of Champions in recent Dungeon

"Challenge of Champions V" was in Dungeon #108, the March 2004 issue. It's listed on the "Back Issues Available" ad in the latest ish, so Paizo still has some around. Good to see stuff by Richards-- I still miss his "Monster Hunters" ecology articles from Dragon. The new formats just aren't as...

    What D&D character are you?

A couple years back this (or one similar) said I was a "Lawful Good Human Cleric." Today I am a "Chaotic Good Human Bard"... Something's changed...

What other of setting finalists from the WotC contest got published

. Excellent! I still check your website from time to time to see if there is any new info-- glad to finally hear how things are progressing... Once "Northern Crown" is out, can "Europa 1666" be far behind?

    [October] What Are You Reading?

October reading... Finished Dies the Fire by S. M. Stirling, now reading Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson and working my way through A Monarchy Transformed: Britian 1603-1714 by Mark Kishlansky... Seems I'm on a small 17th Century kick... Though in the Halloween spirit I'll probably pick up...

Historians! Gamers! Armchair Gamer Historians! Gather for the arcane revolution!

Well, there's your first change right there... To use magic at the level of control/ "technology" in the D&D rules, it would have had to have been around for a while... and society would have adapted to it. Those who can use the wizardly version would have to be literate, and educated, and have...

History can be fun 3: Women in the European Renaissance -fighting

Random, Useless Historical Facts and unsupported Rumors IIRC, the judicial duel is still legal in Maryland, of all places. The story goes something like this: Maryland's original constitution, charter, or whatever, contains a line saying that the laws of the state will be "the same as the laws...

DM wants advice: Fortifying a Kou-toa village

Algae-covered floors (Balance check) that dump characters who slip into a moat filled with giant stinging sea anemones (or whatever the Underdark equivalent would be...) (the KT as clownfish) Or perhaps blind cave piranhas... Seaweed that entagles/ grapples characters... Narrow passages filled...

    Insult me bay-bee!

From the Department of Random Historical Facts... Possibly the most insulting thing you could say to someone, in the Medieval/ Renaissance Period, was "You, sir, are a liar..." Certain to get you a duel...
