Suggestions for fun EL 18 encounters (John, Mike, Avi stay out!!!)

Sounds cool! My take would be to pick a theme for the encounters. Evil outsiders would seem a classic choice... But what's going to be fun/easy/challenging is likely to be somewhat dependant on the party composition... Any idea what that's likely to be? IME, one problem you are likely to see...

What makes a high or low magic campaign?

TheGogmagog IMO, I'd say your game was well within the 'normal' range. 70% isn't going to hose anyones character over too badly... as long as it's a reasonable mix of gear, or there are opportunities to trade some of it. Probably slightly 'increases the power' of buff magic from PCs. Imagine...

How often do deal with AoOs?

They come up more often nowadays in the game I'm playing in. Lots of larger opponents and our tank has a 5' reach... Moving towards summoning a lot of spam to keep his targets busy. Also just had a minotaur spiked chain weilder join. That's going to bump the count considerably?

Attacks of Opportunity are ruining D&D!!

I can't believe it. I thought this site was meant to be neutral ground for sensible discussion. Now I find out it's stuffed full of hate mongering attack of opportunity-ists. For shaaame! You can't blame poor little AOO for all your problems. It's mom was hopped up on healing potions. Pop used...

    Ask me about Shadowrun 4th!

Thanks a lot for this! Really has whet my appetite for 4th edition! How does the new initiative system work out? Anything changed from 3rd? SR 3. Dwarf. Really should be a 10 point race, IMO.

    Now they buy pigs

I've used the bag of tricks. Our DM put us through a dungeon filled with death magic touch effect trapped doors. Just kept throwing mice, bats and cats at them. Hey, pigs/reality... what about guys who can throw fire out of their fingers or survive 2-3 terminal velocity falls? Not realistic...

Worst D&D adventure of all time?

Another vote for Nightfang Spire here. That thing really sucked. Was worse, because it read a lot better than it played. Stopped playing 3E for quite a while after that horror. On the upside, at least I learned a lot about how to annoy players.

Help: Evil DM sundered my wand :(

Could just carry around the wand/stick. Don't use it for anything. Someone might just fall for it? Especially if people like to sunder wands? On the other hand, bluff could work out very nicely for a sorceror? Class skill based off casting stat. That MEA could be well spent there. Not going to...

    Fleshiver: 5th-level Power Word Stun?

Interesting... Not suprised you like it! :) In the 2nd round, you save to avoid the damage/nauseation. Is the damage negated or halved on a successful save? IME, the big disadvantage with PW stun is the HP limit. Quite a few beasties are likely to be outside the upper limit for it.

Is it possible to have an exciting and long-lasting campaign in a historical setting?

I'm a big fan of pseudo mythical historical games. Like quite a few other people, most of my experience has been with Ars Magica. Played a couple of long running games... IMO, the history works best to flavour the setting and providing background events. Not such a big fan of getting directly...

Help: Evil DM sundered my wand :(

I like Thanees idea. Glove of storing. I'd take to carrying round a non magical wand shaped stick... Wave it around menacingly while casting spells... The next guy who gets into melee with you might waste an action sundering it? :) And if someone doesn't kill the fake wand during your next...

    Fighter Question

I'd go down the expertise route - disarm and trip. Strikes me as very gladiatorial. Disarm does get a sizable bonus from 2 handed weapons. You could mix up the styles. Avoid focusing on one weapon. Take Quickdraw and change weapons mid combat. It's not 'optimal', but I tried it and found it...

    Sacrificing verisimilitude or adventure

I'm quite happy to stretch reality in the name of fun... Don't like reworking things the players have 'seen', but will readily change 'unseen' plot elements. I'll have a pop a the NPC/BBEG thing: If the NPC wasn't vital to some other story, then I'd be tempted to edit the plot to make the...

    Character maintenance

I like having a worn character sheet. Feels comforting and homely to me. When they get too bad, I'll rewrite them onto a new one - although this is generally tempting fate - tends to get the character killed IME. :uhoh: Some of the players in that group use various PC tools and print new...

    Bathrooming

Normally, I'll go print something out on the PC... In another room, so gives me a few minutes to think. Sometimes I go the deer + headlights route. :)

What does a horrible monster want?

Thanks guys, more really cool ideas! Stereroo - That's the classic. Love that kind of beast. Unfortunately what my last monster was like. Although we've had a good few bad things since then, I figured a somewhat different motivation would be needed for this one... Mix things up and all that. :)...

Cannot use lance in a mounted charge?

I guess part of the initial question is where the rider is in relation to the horse. It occupies a 10X10 square. Could the rider be considered to be in one of the 2 back squares. That way, the rider is in reach with their lance and the horse can attack? Does it specify anywhere? Could you...

Tell me of the coolest feature of some monster...

Babylon 5 and Perdido Street Station. Both ones I'd have bought up. Damn. Just realised I might be a geek. :D I always liked an idea from Deadlands. Counting coup, IIRC. Basically when you kill certain creatures there's a chance you get some power relating to them. Of course, using these powers...

    Imp Buckler defense broken?

It's not in the SRD, or I'd post it here, but I'm 99% sure it's only for 2 weapons. 2 handers don't apply. Why wouldn't someone use it? Well, it gives -1 to hit. Instead you could take an animated large shield. The AC is 1 less than the equivalent buckler for the magical + cost, but it doesn't...

What does a horrible monster want?

Wow! Thanks a lot, some seriously cool ideas there. Firstly, demiurge1138, that sun god idea is very nifty. Having him as a lower powered god/transcended mortal is probably the way to go. Plenty of interesting plotlines to do with taking down a god. Guess anything powerful enough to do that...
