Does art matter in a publication?

I'm on his side. There are a few kinds of art I like to see; 1) gorgeous stuff (Wayne Reynolds covers, Denis Beavais dragon-fight covers, etc.) 2) descriptive stuff (pictures of weapons and armor, or iconic characters, meant to get a feel for the idea being presented) 3) cartoony jokes...

Forked Thread: D&D: Generic and Specific Both?

I don't think that D&D was created as a toolkit, so much as a set of rules to work for a very specific group of people in their home game, that every single purchaser ended up playing differently than those creators did. Regardless of it's intended function, it *became* a toolkit the second...

Testing The Correlation Between Class Preference And 4E Love/Hate

Yeah, I've noticed that the posts that are getting any response at all are only getting nitpicked to death on minor example details, and that anything not controversial is being ignored. As with pretty much every other thread asking for opinions about gamer's preferences regarding 4E, it's a...

Testing The Correlation Between Class Preference And 4E Love/Hate

My pet notion for the 3.0 divine casters (both Cleric and Druid) is that they should have the option of using either a Spontaneous casting mechanic (small fixed spells known list, flexibly cast) *or* a Prepared casting mechanic (potentially limitless list, but some sort of 'prayer book' or...

Testing The Correlation Between Class Preference And 4E Love/Hate

Ignoring the derail attempt; I always seem to end up with Clerics or Druids in 3.X. (In previous editions, I preferred some sort of multi-classed elven magic-user.) I've never liked Rogues, and I've only played Fighter types in GURPS and Vampire. I'm not a fan of 4E.

    Advice for Gamers in Society

It was mildly annoying when LARPing to have half of your fellow gamers off boinking and not available for advancing the plotline. Still, they were young and unmarried, so I guess they still had sex drives.

    Tweaking monsters

Way, way back, when 3.0 was pretty darn fresh, Kenzer & Co came out with their Kalamar stuff, in which several of the critters would have little notes in them like, 'Unlike other Aberrations, this critter has Blindsight instead of Darkvision' or whatever. To me, that was the way it was...

    Advice for Gamers in Society

Remember children, you should hide your true identity and feelings from other people, if you don't want to be ostracized and rejected. Burrow deeply into that closet and only talk to people about what they seem interested in. If you happen to like something that they aren't talking about, it's...

Does Your Heather Have Two Mommies?

Even if Alter Self were ruled not to be able to do this, an enterprising wizard with some extreme views about the usefulness of males might research a transmutation spell that could swap functional gender (but nothing else) and create her own 'Amazon enclave' of reproductively self-sufficient...

Hit Points - A Discussion of a "Solution"

I'm partial to either; a variation on the system Monte Cook uses in his Book of Experimental Might (Wound points and 'Grace' points, with the former being actual physical health and the latter being the much-faster-healing 'winded' type damage). Con score in health, add class HD in 'grace.'...

    Information on Druids

Good choice. In the academic context 'discredited' means simply 'something which I have grossly oversimplified into a straw man that I disagree with.'

    Information on Druids

Campbell's about as reputatable as it gets in that area of study. If you don't care for any presentation of what ancient druids believed in, including the practices of their descendents, I'd recommend just making up something that sounds credible to you. The actual 'druids' are all dead and...

1E Unearthed Arcana: Yea or Nay?

So many things in that book that I loved, but gadzooks, was there some stinky broken cheese in there as well! Drow as a PC race. It was indeed a herald of the Drizztpocalypse. If only they'd followed through on the Drow/Duergar/Svirfneblin trope and made a race of underdark Halflings or...

    Dragonomicon: Dracolich Mongrel

Thanks! I was tempted not to even post to this thread, seeing as how the jumping-on-anyone-who-doesn't-love-it has already started. I kind of like the dragon's graveyard idea, best, myself, but I blame that on leftover 'cool' still stuck in my brain from the D&D cartoon. :)

    Dragonomicon: Dracolich Mongrel

I was wondering myself what sort of 'personality' such a creature would have, with fragments of multiple minds and souls shoved together in a chaotic mass. If the thing didn't have some sort of controller, it would likely tear itself apart. Even then, a dracolich made from a single, even...

    Your Second Love

My first love after D&D was Villains & Vigilantes. A role-playing game about *superheroes!* It was the best thing, ever. Since then, I've had lots of loves. Vampire: the Masquerade, Mage: the Ascension, Aberrant, Trinity, Adventure! and Mutants & Masterminds are all in my absolute favorites...

What class are you least likely to play in 4e?

I'd have to try them all to find out. At first glance, the Cleric and Wizard, who've been my favorites since 1st edition, look like they'd still be my favorites. I've never liked the Thief/Rogue, so I'll probably still not care for that class / role. Until I've seen how they play under 4E...

I'm sorry, your character idea is too awful.

While not 'Egyptian God of Mexican Wrestling' level quirky (his 'Nut Buster' is the coolest wrestling move, ever), my most unusual character was for a Spelljammer game, a Tinker Gnome Giant Werehamster Clockwork Mage. Everyone laughed, until the party was were taken prisoner by the Mind Flayers...

"Legal" paladin trickery Forked Thread: Would you allow this paladin in your game?

Yeah, I think they might even have been forbidden the use of flaming oil. Every class, in those days, had a 'use poison?' disclaimer, just as every monster had a '% in lair' chance.

Vampires, Pop Culture, and Your Game

Dusk Till Dawn. A fun movie. The sequel 'Texas Blood Money' is MST3K worthy in it's cheesiness. That's one thing, no matter how they are played, I never use the rules-version with the dozen weaknesses and strange collection of powers. I prefer for the majority of 'vampires' to be more like...
