Alternative Monsters: Different Fluff, Same Crunch

It's alive! Hives discovered in the jungle appear as miniature castle-like spires of fused ceramic, backed by the heat of the sun, with sharpened spears of bamboo sprouting out in all direction, like a prickly fortification. Bright yellow and red beetles crawl and fly about the structure...

Help Make James Jacobs' and Nic Logue's Love Child! (Spoilers)

This kinda reminds me of the 'mother of monsters' PrC in Wrath & Rage (for Orc Adepts). To build it into an adventure, the monsters would be a threat, obviously, but also the ritual / Incantation / whatever involved in the process would require certain reagents. Vast quantities of food...

Does Adulthood Change the RPG Experience Much?

I said yes, but I translated 'adulthood' to mean maturity and not just age. Gaming with immature people, I find that random shopkeepers get attacked, particularly if they aren't obsequious and don't give away their wares. The immature players then get their nose out of joint that the forces...

Do You Prefer to Play One of the Four Primary Base Classes (Clr, Ftr, Rog, Wiz)?

Yes to this. In 1e and 2e I was all about multiclassing Cleric/Wizard somehow (even I had to strap some Fighter in there). But in 3e, it's been Cleric, Druid, Warlock, Barbarian, Ranger, Wizard, etc. Straight Fighters and Rogues don't really interest me, but neither do Sorcerers or Paladins.

Do Adjustments To Core RAW Often Meet With Resistance In Your RPGing Group?

Same with out group. Late 30's, early 40's, we've all played a dozen or more RPGs, some online games, etc. and we all like to tinker. Everything is a toolbox to us.

Do You Sometimes Purchase RPG Books Just To Read (Not For Play Purposes)?

I have so much White Wolf stuff I've never used it's not even funny. Most of the Mage: the Ascension and Wraith: the Oblivion books, most of the Werewolf: the Apocalypse books (I played one game, but that was before I had any of the books). Most of the Vampire: Dark Age books (again, we played a...

PC concepts I'd love to play...

Instead of an awakened animal mage, one of the NPCs in a current campaign is a Raven familiar to a high-level wizard who is currently 'elsewhere' (Imprisoned, actually). The familiar retains most of his familiar abilities, including the power of speech, as well as a Ring of Invisibility that his...

Tips/ideas wanted for running a royal ball/banquet situation

I've been having similar thoughts about trying to make a banquet/ball interesting for the last module of the Freeport trilogy. Twelve Council-members, the Sea Lord, family members, a few random nobles, the major domo, the head of the wizard's guild, the head of one or more influential temples...

DMing your way into a corner

One option to deal with possible PC backstories and / or the language issue would be to have some of the 'natives' turn out to not be natives at all, but the descendents of exiles from the PCs native country. Why were they exiled? Politically unpopular? Religious schism? Cannibal cultists...

    What's with the Gnome Hate?

Gnomes exist in the AD&D game only because of Hugi, from Three Hearts and Three Lions. Half-Elves (and Hobbitses) exist in because of Elrond, from Tolkein. Neither race is a staple of pre-D&D fantasy, really. One fantasy race I see very little of is the idea of the elder human race, from...

    What's with the Gnome Hate?

I'm glad the ideas will be working for your 4e halflings, but I gotta admit, I never pictured them as bards, illusionists, tinkers, fey, etc. so the Halflings in my various games have been *radically* different than yours! Never read Birthright, so I'm not real familiar with these Vistani...

Harry-Potter Like 4e Game - Need Ideas for Challenges

The mage(s) who created this stuff in the first place 'cut corners' by binding spirits to the various machines, rather than animating them with costlier and more complicated magics. The machines, with simple animalistic spirits, are increasingly likely to 'freak out' in the prescence of...

    Bizaare Gambling Games

Something we used to do at recess in Oklahoma was play 'chicken' with boot knives. The two challengers would stand a few feet part, facing each other, and one would throw his knife so that it stuck in the ground between the boots of the other, and then step back a step. The other would throw...

    The Misalignment of the Gods

Ideally, every diety should be unaligned. Worshippers of every diety in history have been good, evil, selfish, generous, orthodox, lapsed, etc. The god(s) demand a certain level of devotion, but unless a god is a god *of an alignment* (a god of law, for instance, or a god of chaos), there's...

    What's with the Gnome Hate?

In the launch of the Scarred Lands setting, Gnomes weren't a part of it, but I wanted to include them, so I envisioned them as a nomadic people called the Rus, who were very much based on cheesy stereotypes of the Romani. Brightly-painted wagons (that doubled as boats), garishly-clad...

    Least Favorite (Core) D&D Race

I picked half-elf, but it was a three-faced coin toss between them, half-orcs and halflings. I'm not fond of the dragonborn (prefer kobolds with draconic traits) or tieflings, either, but since I play 3.5, it's hardly an issue for my games. That being said, just because I care not at all for...

    Why do people hate Elfkind?

And yet, Gary's elves *were not* Tolkeins elves. They were shorter, and had some lower stat maximums. Humans were better at certain things, and many class options (and the whole Dual Classing thing) were not available to elves, *and* Elves couldn't be as good as a human at any specific class...

    Why do people hate Elfkind?

I blame the Complete Elves Handbook as well. I was a huge elf fanboi until I read that, with stuff about human bards falling into despair, and never playing music again and wanting to deafen themselves after hearing elves (not elven bards, just any old elf-on-the-street) singing at a funeral...

    Making trouble for a womaniser

Doppleganger. It just wanted to get him nekkid (and sleepy) so it could steal his stuff and leave. It's never fun when a little somthing, something turns out to be a little someTHING, someTHING, if ya know what I mean... Or he could meet a friendly dagger-toting lass named something like...

So THAT's why Regdar gets no love...

Naull. She's an Evoker. And, to my eyes, kinda Mayan-looking. Her, Kerwyn, Eberk and Tordek are that other Iconic 'core four' party, that doesn't get blown up or dismembered or eaten by beasties all the time. Obviously, they are much more competent than the Regdar, Jozan, Lidda, Mialee group...
