D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

Interesting. This is probably where our opinions differ the most. Although i understand but dislike the magical woodsman aspect of the ranger, the archer i just don't. I agree that some rangers can have it as a ranged alternative (after all many of them could be hunters), i just don't see them...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

I never thought of something like this before and i quite like the idea. It can make for some unique thematic builds.

D&D 5E (2014) Is there a way to negate critical hits without adamantine armour?

Good point. I don't really see HPs as health also. Overall health is a part of them for sure, but the only way a system, any gaming system that incorporates HPs as a game mechanic to actually make sense (has a real world counterpart or enough suspension of disbelief) is to actually consider...

D&D 5E (2014) [POLL] What drives your inspiration behind char gen?

Most of the time, i use and abuse mechanics to achieve a certain thematic goal. My themes are however almost always strongly media based (books, poems, movies, comics....), even other gaming systems, so i voted media. However, my latest PC was actually rolled, as in BG, bond, flaw being all...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

Two good points, although on the opposite sides of the coin. My own 2 cents. At the moment we really do lack a dedicated scout class. Some would argue to the actual benefits or having such a class (especially its tactical usefulness), but personally i think no classes need be "battle worthy" to...

    D&D 5E (2014) A half-elven question for the lore masters

Well, he's paternal grandmother was neutral evil :P Really, she was. But not the idiot, stupid evil. Either because she needed help tp survive on the surface or because of genuine gratitude, she did over time form bonds with several surfacers (aside from her mate). Yes, self preservation was...

D&D 5E (2014) Do most striker builds weaken a party?

First off, a nice topic :) Second, i'm with the band that doesn't consider the 5E rangers as "strikers" or "glass cannons". The way they are designed is as a versatile magic augmented combat class (melee or ranged). I won't be going into my criticism over the designer's choice (there is a whole...

    D&D 5E (2014) A half-elven question for the lore masters

I always thought the Drow arrogance was more of a cultural thing then a genetic one.

    D&D 5E (2014) Not liking Bounded Accuracy

Unfortunately the problems with armor class is not bound to the bounded accuracy per se (no pun intended). At least i don't see it that way. Ever since 2E i've had my doubts about the whole Armor Class system, that i find it harder to rationalize then the Hit Points system. However, any attempt...

    D&D 5E (2014) Not liking Bounded Accuracy

This! I can't state how much i love it. Only thing i might add would be some specialization/expertise options for most of the classes (like in the old 1E, 2E rules), just to ramp up the flavors. Aside from that i wouldn't trade BA for anything. Amen brother.... Late EDIT: to add the...

    D&D 5E (2014) A half-elven question for the lore masters

    1. Yep 2. Nothing official in the 5E books i've read so far, but i don't have the SCAG or the Out of the Abyss, where there might be more detailed Drow features/rules described. Sounds like an interesting character to play, but it just feels too Drow for a 2nd generation. I would have surely...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

The first time we transitioned from 4E to 5E, i actually proposed to my DM to merge to archetypes (one fighter and one ranger) into a class with an end result that would be just the same as if i did i regular MC and push the casting 6-8 levels back (or even ditch it all together). He still said no.

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

Found it. The guardian really draws my attention. It kinda plays one of my two favorite themes for rangers in DnD. EDIT: probably because it reminds me the most of the 1E ranger :)

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

    1. You practically read my mind here. 2. I tried something like this in 4E and it didn't work out well. But, then again 4E seamed to have been more "rigid". I mean, i survived with my PC till level 13-14 and only stopped playing because 5E came out, but still.... I always felt like an appendix...

    D&D 5E (2014) A half-elven question for the lore masters

That sounds like a good idea. I already opted for silvery eyes with violet/obsidian strains (when i decided what physical trait to take), that he inherited from his grand mother. Is the rule for taking one drow feature and substituting one regular half elven, for first generation half-drow only...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

Don't get me wrong, there is certainly a fun way to role play a ranger that refuses to use magic, just as easily as there is way to role play a cleric that is an atheist and/or has lost his faith so he no longer casts spells and only fights as quasi sub optimal fighter. But is the class designed...

Ah, i don't have the SCAG yet.
