The importance of being a 20

I planned my concept around a STR based mobile character, that fights mostly with a 2 handed sword, but can switch to other methods as situation demands it. I looked to the 1E ranger for inspiration. The bow was never supposed to be my main weapon, it's sort of came out of the blue and just...

    D&D 5E (2014) New "Fighting Style": Versatile

I like it..... Now let's get WoTC to include it in the next errata :D

D&D 5E (2014) Why Has D&D, and 5e in Particular, Gone Down the Road of Ubiquitous Magic?

This. Since most campaigns are low to mid tier anyways, there is no balance issue with MCing. In my group of 5 i am the only one who has expressed an interest in doing it (for the above concept reasons), but i can see why there would be optimization uses of the feature, especially if you know a...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Has D&D, and 5e in Particular, Gone Down the Road of Ubiquitous Magic?

It doesn't (achieve the goal of the wilderness warrior), it's just the next best thing. But despite the cosmetics, the outlander fighter is just an outdoorsy fighter, not a ranger. There are still things the ranger class has that fit the ranger archetype (Land's stride and favorite terrain...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Has D&D, and 5e in Particular, Gone Down the Road of Ubiquitous Magic?

Just because it can change, doesn't mean it should change. Nor that we should encourage the said change. I did not chose the decimation example in vain. I feel the same way about the way i feel about the ranger. And what makes you think the other classes are more fixated? Today the ranger...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Has D&D, and 5e in Particular, Gone Down the Road of Ubiquitous Magic?

That's like saying words have no meaning, because colloquial use can change their meaning....... take decimation in example. You can use it as much as you want in the context of having a hard time, but in essence it will always be the execution of every tenth man in a legion.

The importance of being a 20

Currently i run with Precision Attack, Maneuvering Attack and Evasive Footwork. I plan to open up with the bow at the start of each encounter (especially if allowed to stealth) and then use as part hit end run tactics. In example, i use mobile to disengage the foes if needed, and then pepper...

D&D 5E (2014) People of the forums I need your help to build a character

Kithas beat me to it. I was going to propose Mounted Combatant as well, if you are going to emulate Knight's Tale :D

The importance of being a 20

Addendum: Sorry to necro this one. But, things have changed a bit. My PC has acquired a magical long bow and is the only one in the party that is proficient in using it. My current array is: 18-13-14-12-14-10 I have an ASI coming up, that would have went to the 18 (to get it up to 20), but now i...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Has D&D, and 5e in Particular, Gone Down the Road of Ubiquitous Magic?

I didn't. I picked a fighter. For the first time in my DnD history, i picked a fighter with an outlander background to be a classical 1E and 2E ranger. I find it a wee bit insulting that a class and background combo represents the class better then the name holder. It also breaks away with the...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Has D&D, and 5e in Particular, Gone Down the Road of Ubiquitous Magic?

True enough. However if other people have already expressed their opinions, and i do agree with them, i would not burden my posts by repeating them. Also true. However having spell casting as a feature means you take the entire baggage with it. Again, as mentioned, dispel, anti magic, spell...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Has D&D, and 5e in Particular, Gone Down the Road of Ubiquitous Magic?

Ah, don't get me started on the liberal proliferation of weapon proficiencies. As i mentioned, that's not what the thread is about :P I guess i we ask this question a large enough number of times, we'll get lots of different answers. But i won't go too much with redundancy here, as...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Has D&D, and 5e in Particular, Gone Down the Road of Ubiquitous Magic?

    1. It would be, if the thread was about people complaining how mundane objects like swords and bows were feeling so mundane because all of a sudden anyone could just pickup and use them. Which i personally wouldn't find all that odd, but that's just me ;) "Tapping" into power sources however, i...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Has D&D, and 5e in Particular, Gone Down the Road of Ubiquitous Magic?

Pretty much so. One of the critics on the spell casting as a feature is that i "blends" the classes. Like the paladin/cleric ranger/druid dichotomy. But also, as you say, some of us prefer class defining abilities to universal spell casting. Oh i .... or better yet we, have. In the old WoTC...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Has D&D, and 5e in Particular, Gone Down the Road of Ubiquitous Magic?

Beat me to it. I probably should have bolded the "meaning and identity to the class". Also, i can see why some people would go for the hunter's mark, but in my eyes this was never a ranger's trademark.... not until 4E. I still stand by my words. I would give up some (belay that, most) casting...

D&D 5E (2014) Is the stat system biased against front-liners?

True..... and it's why i dislike both point buys and standard arrays. However, just yesterday (i kid you not) i played with the idea of trying to create 1E or 2E classes with a point buy system, but retaining the minimal requirements for each class. Naturally i tried the ranger first, as it was...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Has D&D, and 5e in Particular, Gone Down the Road of Ubiquitous Magic?

Bolded by me. That is exactly what i feel. I would rather trade some of the ranger and palading casting for encounter or daily features that would add both meaning and identity to the class. And yes, i agree, the paladins are still probably in a better spot with their spell to smite conversion.

D&D 5E (2014) Why Has D&D, and 5e in Particular, Gone Down the Road of Ubiquitous Magic?

That is true. I know i'm probably in the minority here, but so far i've liked both the Spell less Ranger and the UA's Ranger variant proposals. I also liked some fo the home brews i saw here. It would surely be nice if the Paladins get similar treatment as well. Though..... from my limited time...

    Very good point there!

D&D 5E (2014) Extra attack or defensive tactics

Yeah, but in this case i opted for a mostly melee character. But even if highly versatile and being good at both (like raising Dex and picking up Alert), i don't think shooting first would be enough. Killing first is what prevents you from being hit or dead, not shooting first. And after all the...
