Disney buying Lucasfilm for $4 billion! More Star Wars movies coming!

I feel a great disturbance in the force. My initial reaction was that the announcement had to be a fake. Color me stunned.

D&D 5E (2014) Poll: Experience, Leveling, and Groups

As with a lot of the rule system, it depends on the type of campaign and players. On the one hand, if I'm running a west marches style sandbox with a large player base of whom only a limited number will show up for a given day, I will absolutely assign xp on a session by session basis. On the...

    Wing Three

Have only gotten through first couple posts, but just wanted to say this sort of summary where you see how a campaign develops is very interesting. Thanks for posting it!

    D&D 5E (2014) Poll: What is a Level 1 PC?

If I'm playing a sandboxy game, I'm fine starting out with just the same competency as a regular town guard. I have to use the info I gather to pick my own fights. On the other hand, if I'm playing an adventure path, I would rather have my character start a bit better than that so that to be...

    D&D 5E (2014) Weapon Specialization?

I like the idea of specialization opening up special maneuvers rather than damage or attack bonuses. The general problem I see with weapon specialization is that I would like fighters to be able to pick up whatever cool random magical weapon they find without the player feeling that they...

D&D 5E (2014) How it plays vs How it feels and looks

To me, active means that a deity would at least answer a commune spell asking whether something constitutes a heresy.

D&D 5E (2014) How it plays vs How it feels and looks

Here's another one, maybe more setting related. I want gods to have active involvement with their clergy, but I also want priests who secretly worship demons etc.

D&D 5E (2014) How it plays vs How it feels and looks

I agree with much of that. May simply be an issue of meaning of "defining." I think in 3E characters are less defined by their items. I remember 1e discussions of "My wizard who found a wand of lightning bolts" or "My fighter who got a girdle of giant strength." In 3e IME you were more...

A non white male middle class British Doctor?

You could go for in-jokes, like having Scott Baluka, Michael J. Fox and Keanu Reeves show up. To me the most important feature is that the Doctor is British. Age, skin color and social class don't seem important. I think even a female Doctor could work. There are handwaves as to why it...

D&D 5E (2014) How it plays vs How it feels and looks

I don't want characters defined by their magic items. Yet I want magic items to be powerful relative to character abilities.

    D&D 5E (2014) Of Fighters and Sammiches

"Aioli" might sound like some fancy new condiment, but if you leave out the flavorings, it's just mayo. Folks who want their expertise dice spread as plain damage bonus mayo can have that. It seems to me that what CNN has gotten used to is a turkey sandwich with the 3.5 cranberry chutney...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Q&A 9/20

I like the idea the specialists getting a "kicker" on some spells. For example -charm person does normally not affect a creature in combat, but that is waived for an enchanter -magic missile requires a to hit roll, but is auto-hit for an evoker -phantasmal force is level 2 spell, but level 1...

    Base measurement in DDN

Lin kompreno, the beast at Tanagra Paces makes sense, yet there is something about an orc and a pie in a 10 foot square room. However, I think we can all agree that currency should be measured in quatloos.

    Slack Player

This. If you are worried about disruption to the narrative, then the PC is now an NPC. Done. What would you do if the player simply stopped showing up at all?

    Examples of good sandbox campaigns

Vault of Larin-Karr is smaller in scope than Barakas, but is also a very good example of hybrid. Wilderlands struck me as basically pure sandbox, but maybe I'm misremembering. Nod and Hexcrawl Chronicles would be more along the same lines of basically sandbox.
