I think you are just annoyed that he doesn't think like you do. It would seem that the general consensus is that he was describing his views on what the game means to him and you are making it sound like he he attacked you personally. Good luck finding what you are after.

Are people defending Mearls or are they trying to explain their point of view regarding his remarks? Is it that you don't like that people might agree with him?

The level of commitment you get from a casual player can be down right demoralizing to a DM that at the very least wants players to understand how THEIR character works. That being said, you would think that people who barely know the foundations of the game that they ARE playing would put up...

My DM used to roll for funsies all the time. Random rolls....scribble on a sheet of paper...ask players at random what their AC was or how many HP they had left....just random inquires that he would never follow up on. He'd also ask us to roll random dice and never tell us why. ;) If...

I GM for the express reason that i CAN make things up. But i accept that I might be GMing wrong.

There is an X factor involved in being fair. You can't define it. You have to have an existing relationship with people to experience "fair". If you trust your DM to do the right thing within the context of the game then "fair" means...some for you and some for me. If you don't like or trust...
