Isn’t it possible to both know what the game is like and roll up a less than effective character? I’m not arguing I'm just discussing making the most of the characters we end up with. I’ve always found that a sub par character makes for great role playing. YMMV of course.

Red shirts are the minions for the good guys. If the narrative wanted the red shirts to be better, they would be. Ensign Rowe was a red shirt. ;) I'm saying that if we make the most of the characters we end up with, the game is still fun.

Is it more about what you roll up, or how you engage with the scenarios based on what you rolled?

It would just be sad if people didn't know what hero means. In any context.

For what it's worth I'm both a player and a DM and I've never read the PHB either. :rolleyes:

In 40 years of gaming I've never had anyone use Charm anything or protection from either alignment. I played an arcane caster ONCE and was mocked relentlessly for taking spells that didn't cause damage. Don't worry, my therapist says i'll be fine. I didn't even know that "charm person" didn't...

If you read these boards long enough you notice that people often contradict themselves. No i do not have any examples. People will say that they don't care for improv but enjoy sandbox. Without going down the definitions rabbit hole maybe someone can explain to me how you play a sandbox game...

Any style that you don’t prescribe to. You run your game your way and I’ll run mine how I like; red flags, highways….whatever.

If no one likes what the DM proposes; that’s a DM without players. Why is everyone so hostile towards different styles of play?

Why must you stir the pot? It’s not for me.
