5e combat system too simple / boring?

This is an excerpt from the podcast Imaginary Worlds, where Paul La Farge talks about the time he sat down and played a game of D&D with Gygax. Starts around 24:35 and is about 3 minutes long. https://soundcloud.com/emolinsky/rolling-the-twenty-sided-dice Interviewer is Eric Molinsky (EM)...

D&D 5E (2014) Levels of literary heroes (and inflation thereof)

The archmages in Jack Vance's Rhialto the Marvelous all cast Time Stop multiple times, so they must be level 18 plus. As a fun side note, let us not forget that the elder god Cthulhu (all praise his name) was defeated by a sailboat.

    D&D 5E (2014) State of D&D

I completely agree with your preconceived notion on the state of D&D (and yes I mean you, you superior internet denizen). Please fill this post with XP and Laughs.

[UPDATED AGAIN] Gary Gygax's Widow & TSR Settle Trademark Dispute

This is turning into a Shakespearean tragedy. (I can't say Gygaxian, there is a trademark on that.)

    D&D 5E (2014) Not liking Bounded Accuracy

If you don't like Bounded Accuracy as is, maybe you can add double stat bonuses to the PCs abilities. You could also have them trade class special abilities for extra to-hit (or skill) bonuses-similar to how choosing between feats and a stat bump.

WotC's Chris Perkins Talks About... Everything! Upcoming Storylines, Products, Staffing, Other World

Sorry, I may have misinterpreted this-are you asking about the value of "official" vs adapted content?

WotC's Chris Perkins Talks About... Everything! Upcoming Storylines, Products, Staffing, Other World

Nothing is stopping me from using any older material. It was an answer to the question of "why can't you just use the old stuff?" and that was in the past, they released books with generic content, the Castles Guide is just an example. The 2e/3e/4e eras were full of those releases so some...

D&D 5E (2014) I don't think Wizards is looking at the whole picture.

No, I think you need him. If you didn't need him you would just put him on ignore.

    D&D 5E (2014) Need a safety net for 1st level characters -- it's complicated

How much of a change to the current system do you want? One idea from Torchbearer, is to declare the goal of the combat at the start. These goals include: Banish, Capture, Convince, Drive Off, Kill. Conduct the combat as normal and the "loser" gets the goal. If the PCs decide the goal is to...

WotC's Chris Perkins Talks About... Everything! Upcoming Storylines, Products, Staffing, Other World

The Gord the Rogue novels had some elements in common to the Rage of Demons storyline. Iuz seems like a natural choice. (For those who haven't read the novles the basic plot is that the demon lords take sides in looking for an ancient artifact of Tharizdun. Grazzt, Yeenoghu, and Kostchtchie...

WotC's Chris Perkins Talks About... Everything! Upcoming Storylines, Products, Staffing, Other World

If you look at the 2e release schedule it had all kinds of books that support the game but give no story lines. Such as, Castles Guide "DMGR2: The Castle Guide (1990), by Grant Boucher, Troy Christensen, Arthur Collins, and Nigel Findley, was the second book in the Dungeon Master's Guide Rules...

    D&D 5E (2014) Minis and no grid?

The wood stirrers at Starbucks can be used as a ruler for the minis to determine how far they can move. Their length is roughly equivalent to a 30 ft move. I sometimes do this when I use felt for a battle mat.

    D&D 5E (2014) Greg Leeds talks about D&D

You're an owner of an internet message board asking people why some poster doesn't have something positive to say. You have to step back for a second and laugh.
