The Dilemma of the Simple RPG

Iosue posted a video where WotC people were talking about a survey they conducted. Results: "One interesting tidbit was that there was a positive correlation between complexity of class and non-combat satisfaction, and a negative correlation between complexity of class and combat satisfaction...

The Dilemma of the Simple RPG

There are also the Robin Laws/Ken Hite games which are roll a d6 to decide most everything. The Dungeon World (PbtA) stuff is roll 2d6. Savage Worlds is also roll a few d6 for most everything. Those seem to be the type of games that break through for awards and sales these days. Crunchy systems...

The Dilemma of the Simple RPG

A steep learning curve keeps people from getting involved in your game, but to make money you need more rules, making your steep learning curve steeper. I guess its like Bowhunting.

The Dilemma of the Simple RPG

I think the new way is to sell you the same rules, but on different devices. You have the Players Handbook in print, then you buy a Fantasy Grounds copy, then you pay $5 a month for a subscription.

    D&D 5E (2014) A simple Monster question

+1 is from the attack stat (Strength most likely). So +1 for Strength and +2 for Proficiency (since monsters are proficient in their own attacks listed) for a total of +3. Its proficiency + stat for things the monster is proficient in. Just attribute stat bonus for everything else. If a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Nerfing Great Weapon Master

How about -10 to hit and +10 damage. I think people would still use it quite a bit.

    D&D 5E (2014) DM's, what's your experience with suggested Challenge Ratings?

CR is good, the "adventuring day" aspect is the problem.

D&D 5E (2014) How Do You Find Players?

You could attend a convention and put out a few flyers and see if someone in your area sees it and contacts you later. There are also places you can put yourself on a "google map" of gamers. As someone said with the board game meetup above, you could play some Adventurer's League and then branch...

What Are These Four Unnamed D&D Products?

Great cover on the character sheets. We need some D&D wall art (Gale Force 9?)-at least one poster from 5e for the game room wall.

D&D 5E (2014) No Monsters Immune to Stun?

As a monk player, I would be perfectly fine with some monsters having stun immunity.

D&D Beyond Beta: Your First Thoughts Thread!

Any news on uploading and sharing custom homebrew content? Because the ability to foist my bad homebrew monsters on all of you makes this a must buy. Also, isn't D&D Beyond setting itself up to be a direct competitor to EN World?

A Few More Tidbits About D&D Beyond From The Developer

I'm warming up to the Curse idea. I will probably subscribe for the first year and see what I think. If they can just build a good looking front end for all the homebrew content, I think that's valuable. I'm sure it would be easier and look better than trying to layout and design a unique pdf...

D&D 5E (2014) Monster Creation rules: Anyone else not find them particularly helpful.

I like the monster design rules for this edition. The only problems are some of the judgement calls: e.g. 20-foot-reach does not effect CR or a monster can have all skills, maxed out and it doesn't effect CR unless the DM decides to bump up the CR.

    D&D 5E (2014) Should I Keep My Volo's Guide

I remember this happening with some of the original Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay core books.

A Few More Tidbits About D&D Beyond From The Developer

I took a time machine back a few hundred years and met up with Napoleon. I warned him about the folly of starting a land war in Asia. He told me "Stop worrying, its not like we are trying to create digital tools for Dungeons & Dragons."

A Few More Tidbits About D&D Beyond From The Developer

Will there be a way for me to develop homebrew content and then easily share with other users of the Curse app? For example, I want to share a gazetteer of my homebrew world of mfonkia, could my players with the Curse app easily download and install my file?
