GM's: what was your first module?

I'm supposed to remember that far back? HA! Either some homebrewed Melee & Wizard thing or a mini adventure for Runequest out of a magazine. The first real module would have been Apple Lane for Runequest. (I was a gamer for years before ever GMing D&D.)

Backgrounds--Does your PC have one? Does it get used?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The more I know about the world/area background, the more likely I am to write a character background. Or I might just get inspired by some minor tidbit of info. Or not at all.

Just checking... how many times have your players died?

No players. PCs going through ToEE, now at level 7/8. I've lost three characters in the last three sessions. Other than that, there was the TPK where everyone got Res'd due to a homebrew Divine Intervention rule. Before that my cleric and the party sorcerer both got taken out the same session...

Players with problems with other players

Of course he would. I don't see any better way of handling it. I would expect that he'd be less likely to over-react if the GM explained the situation to him than if a almost everyone else confronted him. As for the GM not telling him that the others didn't care for the way he was acting, I...

Level of competency via Skill Ranks

To add a bit to what GuardianLurker said, it depended on when and where, and what guild, you are talking about. Originally there were only apprentices and masters. The journeyman (or valet) position didn't come into existance until later in the guilds. Generally, an apprentice was taken in (and...

Do the PCs follow the same rules as everyone else?

I've done it both ways. 'Roll up' every NPC the characters are likely to run into just like a PC or give them average stats, plus whatever for 'special' skills/crafts. (Smith with higher STR, etc.) So I voted for the PCs are special. Rolling up all those NPCs properly just takes way too much...

D&D 4E Would you have alignment in 4e?

I voted no, because there wasn't an 'other' option. My main problem with alignment is that (IMO) its too vague. I agree that the Palladium system is better, but even that needs one or two more entries. I'd much prefer that alignment were given a (short) chapter as optional rules with various...

D&D II - movie on SciFi

I've heard that it will be on one or two more times before it comes out on DVD. However, I have no idea when.

    Who controls your npcs

That does, indeed, make a difference!

    Who controls your npcs

Might I suggest that you re-read what you wrote? The purpose of the game is to have fun! Why is it a real life dream of hers? And, even more importantly, why are you so willing to Scrooge her out of that dream? Priorities, man, priorities!

My "New World" campaign... I'm stuck!

Forget the natives. Disease ought to wipe out one side or the other, if not both, pretty quick.

How many rest periods per level?

It entirely depends on the adventure. Some sessions our characters will go for days with only normal rest periods at night. Others we'll only go an hour of in game time before all spellcasters are desperate to recharge.

Published adventures - weirdest treasure placement

There are at least a couple of old (1e or Basic) modules with treasure that can only be gotten to if the characters use certain spells in the correct order at a certain place... for absolutely no logical reason! Sorry I can't remember any names, I've done a good job of forgetting them. :heh:

Typical Player Behavior, or Bad Roleplaying?

Is this the same pacifistic Isis who poisoned her daddy Ra?

Oops! Right you are, my bad. :heh:

    The Long Duel

Sounds impressively cinematic. Now what do you do if you're rolling hot and the player is rolling cold that day? That's bad enough when it happens to a party, but when the 'party' is one character it can end the whole campaign in one session.

    Magic signet rings?

Sounds like a Justic Leage of America ring, but without the flight ability. :uhoh: Seriously, the 1K gp cost sounds fine, given how limited it is. In fact, if someone else got hold of one somehow, think of all the fun you could have with it! (They get to the prearranged meeting place and...

    PC's trading in items

Absolutely! My first thought when reading the original post was: "Are these characters insane, or just really dumb?" At worst, you trade it in for an Identify to be cast, plus whatever the caster charges in addition to the price of the pearl. (In other words, not the best gem to use for this...

What do you NEED in a starting town?

Now for the really important question: who makes the booze? (No, really, someone will, and beer/ale is almost always a local product even in a small hamlet. An interesting tid-bit of info you might use from history is that local brewers were often women.) A carpenter, leather worker, cooper...
