What would be in your perfect Halloween setting?

Spooky graveyard mandatory, preferably with a run-down, possibly abandoned church connected to it. If it's rural, an old farm with half-collapsed outbuildings, rusting machinery, and a crumbling well is a good choice. Either surround it with disused fields going to seed, or more mysteriously...

Longshoreman Union Strike Could Affect EU/UK Games Shipping To USA

We also use stevedore and dockworker pretty interchangeably, although the official name of the union means you're not going to hear them very often during this mess. Stevedore used to be a separate profession in the US (I had a great-uncle who was one), referring to crane operators on board...

    Playing without the GM present?

This sort of thing used to happen pretty regularly IME, although I haven't seen it much in the last 25 years or so. Sometimes it was like you describe - discussing "domain" stuff in and out of character and telling the GM about it afterward. More often it was scheming about what the PCs would...

[Solo] Barbarian Prince Ultimate Edition 2024

It always felt like more of a sandbox to me than Barbarian Prince, although the official win condition is rather bland by comparison. If you keep playing past the "enough money to retire comfortably" stage you can do some amusingly wonky stuff though.

    Spoilers Agatha All Along discussion

Because they can't write themselves and they're so jealous it makes them snap their teeth impotently in blind idiot rage? My headcanon prefers to believe that was actually HIM jerking around both Matt and Mephisto for the lols. No point in being a shapeshifter if you're not going to use it for...

[Solo] Barbarian Prince Ultimate Edition 2024

Nice to see an old classic revisited and updated. The Dragon Rage reprint/upgrade was also pretty great (a whole second city map was awesome) but it doesn't look like there's ever going to be another print run, which is pretty annoying. Wonder if we'll see Star Smuggler get a similar treatment...

    Spoilers Agatha All Along discussion

No, no, it's much funnier the other way. Mephisto showing up in Daredevil to deliver a C&D letter about the whole "running around calling yourself a devil while wearing nothing but red" thing - and then manages to lose the resulting legal action when he's betrayed by all of the lawyers he's...

Free! AD&D1 and BECMI articles from the 80s

Well, that got bookmarked under favorites immediately. Graeme Davis is a well-remembered name from days past - in part because I was never sure I was pronouncing it right. So many shibboleths in Britain it wouldn't surprise me if even the surname is actually Da-VEESE or something. :)

Is There a Better Way to Illustrate Water on a Dungeon Map Than This?

I do the same thing as aco175, usually sans color. Ripples or current lines depending on how static the liquid is. If I'm feeling fancy or the map is supposed to a diegetic item I might add some little fishes, frogs, whales or sea monsters (depending on what makes sense) like a proper...

    Dragon Reflections #81

Contemporary game reviews are almost always interesting in hindsight. Dragon's okay for that sort of thing, but the Space Gamer used to devote quite a bit of space to a wider variety of reviews, many of them kind of hilariously brutal. Ares (before TSR took over SPI and reduced it to a section...

RPG Print News – Cubicle 7, Goodman Games, and More

Really hits all the right buttons for me. I like surreal adventures, the visual aesthetic is great, and I like Kerr's writing style. Going to have to be selective about who I use it with. I've already subjected about half the people I occasionally run OSR stuff for to my homebrew...

    Spoilers Agatha All Along discussion

Wait, so Agatha and company are persecuted psychic aliens trying to make their way to a mountain refuge for a saucer flight to safety? That'd be a bigger twist than having it turn out Kang was wrong all those years ago and Aggie actually was the Celestial Madonna, not Mantis or Wanda. What...

RPG Print News – Cubicle 7, Goodman Games, and More

The preview for Dream Shrine was good enough to make me want the whole thing. Which is what a preview is supposed to do, of course.

D&D 5E (2014) Amazon US book sales rank.

A look at 13th Age offers a pretty good idea of what more time might have produced, even with much less money, a smaller staff, and no D&D brand recognition behind it. Since one of the criticisms of 4e was that it wasn't really D&D, that last element might even have been for the best.

Titmouse Announces Drunkards, Druggies, & Delinquents, New TTRPG Party Game

Funny. I was just reading a 1983 interview with Kevin Blume of TSR where he opined at some length that the "fantasy adventure" industry should adopt a formal code of ethical guidelines for content like TSR had - the specifics of which he declined to reveal - so that it wouldn't include any...

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

I think you might have meant "sowing" there, although Justin's life does appear to be coming apart at the seams.

OSR Old school wizards, how do you play level 1?

That sounds familiar although I can't quite place it, so perhaps we do have canon confirmation of varied complexity in the sense of very broad "spell levels" as D&D would call it. Yes, pretty excellent. By far the best adaptation of Dying Earth in general IMO. The DCC version has some...

OSR Old school wizards, how do you play level 1?

Broadly speaking, there's three types of "magic" in Dying Earth, none of which are much like any edition of D&D. The closest equivalent are the memorized spells that were either discovered, invented, collected and/or compiled by a legendary guy named Phandal (or something like that - there...

OSR Old school wizards, how do you play level 1?

I'm too lazy to go through all 29 pages of thread to see, but has anyone just answered "briefly, before rolling a new character and hoping for more than one hit point" yet?
