    D&D 5E (2014) A Board Game style Release Schedule

You guys think another setting is likely given FR is the new default setting and there are only three non-core products currently out/announced?

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

Just to be clear, are you referring to 3.0 as opposed to 3E generally?

D&D 5E (2014) So what exactly is Wizards working on?

I'd wager it's not just about being technically "profitable" for Hasbro. That's what a smaller company like Paizo is up to. The owners of Paizo want to make money but they chose to try doing so by running a company that principally makes TTRPG materials. In addition to their profit motive, there...

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

Along these lines, it's worth noting that Paizo is in some ways more of an industry leader than WotC. Not in terms of profit, probably, because they don't control a household name brand. I mean, in terms of shaping the concept of RPG products. I never really looked at Paizo this way because they...

D&D 5E (2014) So what exactly is Wizards working on?

I think this is more of a retail issue than a publisher issue. Go to a box chain book store and you are not likely to find enough PF product to create analysis paralysis. Go to your LGS and you will probably find a wider selection. Go to an online retailer website and it really opens up. Paizo...

D&D 5E (2014) So what exactly is Wizards working on?

Strong point and I never really thought of it. I was excited to hear about PotA because it has "D&D" on the cover. But I am interested in (for example) Iron Gods in spite of it saying PF on the cover (3.X rules are no longer my thing) because I associate Paizo's APs with interesting ideas and...

D&D 5E (2014) So what exactly is Wizards working on?

@Ilbranteloth Fair enough -- Warlord's sale and proifits have(or at least appear to have) gone up as the company has expanded its line over the last five years. So ... not much of a deal breaker in terms of the examples I was using. But sure, it is important to note the difference between sales...

D&D 5E (2014) So what exactly is Wizards working on?

Dude what is your problem? I didn't say either you or the article you linked argued there should be no new products: Note I did not post "should not print anymore 5E material." I understand no one in any of these threads has been arguing that 5E should not print anymore 5E material, even those...

D&D 5E (2014) So what exactly is Wizards working on?

You are not far from what (I think) WotC is currently doing. They need to maintain some physical market presence, however, to make sure their brand is not diluted by Pathfinder or another contender. To most people, D&D and TTRPG are synonymous. WotC has to keep it that way. The rest is...

D&D 5E (2014) So what exactly is Wizards working on?

Ilbranteloth Nice post, I fully agree and have posted the same concept with less examples elsewhere -- BUT what has it got to do with the post you quoted? That post challenges the notion that the link posted by Sacrosanct shows that WotC should not print more 5E material because more materials...

D&D 5E (2014) So what exactly is Wizards working on?

Not at all, Matthan. One of the points of discussion fora is to "think aloud" as it were while you post.

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

The kind of margin possible on TTRPG products is appealing to a much smaller company that only or principally produces TTRPG products ... like Paizo. Could WotC make money on a busy 5E release schedule? Yeah I think it could. But is that margin wide enough to motivate a company like Hasbro to...

D&D 5E (2014) So what exactly is Wizards working on?

My bet is, the real purpose of releasing APs at all is to get even more people to buy the core books.

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

Paizo's core demographic is people who wanted to stick with 3E rules. I really doubt that demographic has changed too much over the years. But some people bought Pathfinder between 2010-2012 because D&D basically did not exist then. Those sales have now slowed/stopped. While that sort of thing...

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

Thanks for posting those words in bold. Even so: producing books costs money, selling a license doesn't. WotC is already producing 5E books. They seem to be confident that profits on those books, along with the larger goal of keeping core books on the shelves by justifying them with minimal new...

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

The story where? Among folks whose primary hobby is playing D&D and other RPGs, yes definitely. BUT like I mentioned above, I don't think WotC is very interested in our demographic anymore. They needed for us not to be a problem at launch. Mission accomplished. The relevant formula must be X +...

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

Why? Producing more D&D stuff costs WotC money. Letting WizKids make D&D minis, Attack Wing, Dice Masters, and board games ... none of that costs WotC. But it certainly makes them money, whether or not those products do okay or do really well.

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

Simply put, more than they think they will make by creating table top RPG books. I don't have any numbers. My evidence is purely anecdotal. The owner of my LGS says its a good seller. I have heard of more non-RPGers starting with this edition than any other. But I should clarify that I'm not...

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

Brand consciousness is an issue of the widest demographic. If anything, the successful debut of 5E after two years of D&D being effectively OOP demonstrates the brand is well-established. (Arguably, WotC waited for the anniversary year to synergize their marketing with press coverage.) What 5E...

    D&D 5E (2014) Help with a simple exp system for 5E

There is a bit of a "problem" (depending on how one feels about raidroading) either way -- I mean, "I better do this because it is an objective" is also railroading. But again, it is a form of railroading less offensive than in-narrative forms (like barring every door except for the "correct"...
