    D&D 5E (2014) Weapons Table

Ooops. Misread brutal. Maths put brutal 1 1d8 at 39/8, or 2d4, or half a step up. Brutal 2 is 44/8, or 5.5, or 1d10. The balance is better for smaller weapons. Makes taking a brutal 1 weapon worse, but gives swingier damage. I actually quite like the exploding dice idea actually regardless of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Weapons Table

Ah ok cool - yeah my main criticism of the current PHB weapon list is that it makes choosing certain weapons for flavour a poorer choice for weapon damage/veratility. Granted it's minimal, but it's still there. For me, if I plan on dual wielding I immediately take Cahulaks, it has loads of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Weapons Table

Ok cool. I obviously like the methodology. What was throwing me initially was the fact finesse and thrown are free. Also some of your calcs seem to have forgotten the martial property (flail), but I'm guessing that's an oversight. I do have some notes on where your balance seems a bit off...

    D&D 5E (2014) Weapons Table

I've been playing around with balancing weapons, and making a process by which you can design anything, so I'd be really interested to see if you had a system to balance/choose properties when you were reworking the table? For instance, How did you decide a club was brutal and a Mace not? Why...

D&D 5E (2014) How to engage a "poke the bear" player?

    1) As mentioned, really, yes, talk to the player. Fastest, easiest solution.....albeit accepted that there may be other factors and so moving on 2) As also mention, tailored advise is tricky considering you may well know WHY the player acts as he does, meanign you're probably not getting the...

    D&D 5E (2014) [Homebrew] − Elf Ability Scores

While you're perfectly entitled to houserule and homebrew to your hearts content....it is a deviation from the PHB assessment of Elves. Elves (high and wood specifically) are not charming beings. Yes, they are physically alluring (The PHB states Slender and 'Graceful' - which sounds like a...

D&D 5E (2014) A quick guide to Homebrewing any weapon concept

They kinda do, for 80-90% of their weapons. I pulled it apart and put it back together. The rules are pretty consistent. It's still an 8% drop. Now fight to fight you might not notice it, and it might not overly impact your fun, but it's still there.....Even the Barbarian Half orc still comes...

D&D 5E (2014) the dex warrior - why make a strength based one?

Then yes - a reach weapon without feat support is not great too close to the squishies. Not a bad offensive option, but defensively not as strong as a normal melee weapon.

D&D 5E (2014) the dex warrior - why make a strength based one?

You're not totally wrong: wielding a sword once you and the monster contact, he has to take an OA to get to the squishy (S). Which is why using a reach weapon without feat support is generally not a great defensive tactic (Reach is great for hit and run battlemasters or rogues though). However...

D&D 5E (2014) A quick guide to Homebrewing any weapon concept

According to the rules built into WotCs own weapon design system it ought to be a d8/d10....The trident is one of the few that break their own rules. The Handaxe, dagger and whip are others. It was one of the reasons I pulled everything apart. Some the weapons had arbitary capabilities, or were...

D&D 5E (2014) A quick guide to Homebrewing any weapon concept

Well yes, obviously. Though worth a sense check as there are a couple of weapons that don't follow WotC own apparent weapon design rules (Dagger, hand axe, trident, whip) Interesting - never noticed that. So in fact, mechanically, the Thrown property on the Dart is kinda pointless other...

D&D 5E (2014) the dex warrior - why make a strength based one?

With Polearm Mastery, you get your OA attack when they Enter your reach range. So you basically get a free attack when something runs up to you, or runs past you. However, if he moves just 5ft away, you can still hit him, therefore losing no combat effectiveness (And now he can't hit you!)

D&D 5E (2014) A quick guide to Homebrewing any weapon concept

I Mean that's probably true - but the point of a concept first method of building weapon does mean that if, somehow, someone comes up with something that would fulfill a particular mix of attributes the capacity is there to design it. I think I watched a program where they beheaded a load of...

D&D 5E (2014) A quick guide to Homebrewing any weapon concept

Heavy finesse.....yeah does seem a bit oxymoronic. I guess you could rename "Heavy" to mean "Unweildly"....so a ten foot rapier could count as a Heavy/Unwieldly weapon. Mechanically, they are just tricky to use and too big for small races. Well, there are no light Thrown Martial weapons...

D&D 5E (2014) A quick guide to Homebrewing any weapon concept

Ah I see. Yeah I was interested in how WOTC put their weapons together and why stuff like the Trident existed and was essentially rubbish. I also wanted proper rules to build a 2-handed finesse weapon (Katana!), or a heavy thrown weapon.....basically something where you could come up with...

D&D 5E (2014) Discriminating Against Sameness: A Case for Readjusting Racial Bonuses and Ability Score Increases

Ah yes, but that would crush my dreams of playing a Dwarf Sorcerer with such a low Constitution he can't handle his drink, and he's been shunned from dwarven society for being a lightweight.....Poor Therom, ye might have lived but a glorious day, but at least ye will have tasted breath sweetened...

D&D 5E (2014) Discriminating Against Sameness: A Case for Readjusting Racial Bonuses and Ability Score Increases

Ah I stand corrected - though you were talking about the initial stats configuration - didn't realise you had posted other ideas further up the thread. Then yes the ASI = 3x +1 is definitely interesting. It benefits traditionally MAD builds benefiting greatly and saving throws in general going...

D&D 5E (2014) Need help dealing with two bard campaign

    1) As people have mentioned, you're maths is wrong. Think someone mentioned you might be adding CHA 20 to the mod instead of CHA (+5) 2) There's also a reason why with bounded accuracy, 5e suggests point buy and standard array up to 15. 3) As mentioned already, Expertise doesn't stack with the...

D&D 5E (2014) Discriminating Against Sameness: A Case for Readjusting Racial Bonuses and Ability Score Increases

To be fair to the OP: His issue with sameness was that every race could essentially (Through ASI and point buy) have any stat combination, rendering all races the same in the long term. His solution therefore was to do the opposite of what you are suggesting and accentuate the racial stat boost...
