D&D 5E (2014) Throwing Weapons is Cool! So why is it weak?

Right, so its sort of hyphenated differently...."Melee weapon-attack" not "Melee-Weapon attack"....interesting. Also goes to show how subtle some house-ruling can be...seen a couple of games that let the Barb reckless attack with a thrown axe (largely I think because there's been loads of flying...

D&D 5E (2014) Throwing Weapons is Cool! So why is it weak?

AH, I see....Sorry, the first post was about thrown weapons being broken, and I lost the switch over throughout the posts.....so clearly I did miss something.... The yes, feat support is OK I guess, though just to bring the damage up when CE, SS and Dual Wield would do that seems a bit...

D&D 5E (2014) Throwing Weapons is Cool! So why is it weak?

OK, lets just say, 3 weapons do 1d8 damage (Longbow, longsword, spear). Now look at what they can't do. The Bow is hampered by being useless in melee and requiring 2 hands, and the Longsword can't be used other than melee. Now what can't the spear do? well it can do what the bow does (attack...

D&D 5E (2014) Throwing Weapons is Cool! So why is it weak?

Ooops - forgot about that. However, with the range and damage dice - you might as well carry daggers as they are identical to darts AND have melee use. (Actually, darts would too under the improvised weapons rules I believe - not sure) From what I gathered form the OP was that there lacks a...

D&D 5E (2014) Throwing Weapons is Cool! So why is it weak?

Hang on - So you like that they are hybrid (Range & Melee)? But dislike they are not as good at melee as dedicated melee weapons, nor that they are as good at range as dedicated range weapons? I think you are taking a feature (can attack in both melee and at range) but thinking it's a bug...

D&D 5E (2014) Throwing Weapons is Cool! So why is it weak?

I must be missing something. Isn't the issue here that there's No dedicated thrown weapons, only weapons that do both melee and ranged, not that the entire mechanics of throwing are broken. Therefore, wouldn't the easiest fix be just adding in a dedicated throwing weapon, that operates mostly...

    Homebrew Base Class: The Arcanist

Hi guys & gals So I started a PbP game for the first time, and built my own setting, based around a lot of reskinning/reflavouring. However, I needed something to fill a specific concept I couldn't quite fill with the current classes in the PHB and, well, building your own stuff is fun! I've...

Dark Days in Sion - Act 3: Scene 2

Burrai Steelborn With the world rendered in flattened shades of grey by Burrai’s darkvision, the rain caused it to flicker and shift as though they were caught in a snowstorm at dusk. The rain pinged lightly of his plate mail and added a familiar weight to his beard; it reminded him of times...

    D&D 5E (2014) A matter of weapons

There's also the option of using in game rules to balance things out.....so what you could do is pick through those choices you don't think are meaningful because there is an obvious "better choice" there, and implicitly link a feat to that weapon. Then when designing your encounters, just...

D&D 5E (2014) Homebrewing Weapons guide - Help with Heavy Property wanted!

You know what – I think I’ve only gone and cracked it! Heavy: Due to its unwieldly size, a heavy weapon is not something used without skill and planning. While wielding a Heavy Weapon in One Hand, you cannot make Opportunity Attacks. This has the benefit of not breaking the current rules...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sharpshooter

Personally, I'd go with matt mercer here. He allows sharpshooter with daggers (therefore one presumes all thrown weapons)

    D&D 5E (2014) A matter of weapons

I posted on this recently.....largely because I started a heavily reflavoured game and just let people reskin any weapon as long as it fitted thematically.....so I tried to come up with a table, which I managed to get to work for almost every weapon and property. You start at 0 Add 1 for...

D&D 5E (2014) Homebrewing Weapons guide - Help with Heavy Property wanted!

The greatclub is 2 handed but not heavy.....now granted its not a great example, and I've eliminted outiliers such as the trident and handaxe from my final calcs....but it was the weapin that got me thinking about heavy as a property in its own right....which then lead onto 2 handed light...

D&D 5E (2014) Homebrewing Weapons guide - Help with Heavy Property wanted!

I think thats cos theres only club and hand axe that are light and not finesse.......plus you dont get a huge amount of dual weilding STR builds......maybe this system might change that? But yes.....the Heavy property is there as another descriptor to increase option design and concept......so...

D&D 5E (2014) Homebrewing Weapons guide - Help with Heavy Property wanted!

If they are mutually exclusive then you couldn't have a finesse off hand weapon without a feat. Was that intentional? I dabbled with keeping heavy and 2 handed, but I like the idea of a slightly beefed up on handed weapon. Like an uber mace

Whoops.....yes I ballsed up......amended So positive attributes reduce dice size, negative ones increase it (Heavy being a negative attribute)

D&D 5E (2014) Homebrewing Weapons guide - Help with Heavy Property wanted!

Hi there - looking to crowd-source some ideas! (NB: for everything onwards, I'm ignoring weight and Cost) I've been building a heavily flavoured homebrew world for my game and I've encouraged quite a lot of reflavouring of weapons because the world design is sort of Postapocalytip Magepunk...
