Support the OGL v1.0a; sign this change.org petition

I was going to ignore this petition, like I usually do, but then I saw who the author was. Alright, Ryan, we do owe you one, I'll sign this one!

D&D 5E (2024) Have we potentially seen the end of the OneD&D Playtest?

You can bet the players I DM for won't, I was the one pushing the playtest to them. Not anymore. If most groups are like mine, with the DM being the only one buying the books, engaging with the community and caring about the playtest, the playtest may be in deep trouble.

D&D 5E (2024) Have we potentially seen the end of the OneD&D Playtest?

Who even cares about the playtest in the current circumstances? I may or may not vandalize the next survey, but chances are I'll just ignore it.

Ryan Dancey -- Hasbro Cannot Deauthorize OGL

Following it live right now, pretty amazing interview.

D&D Movie/TV Honor Among Thieves to open SXSW Film Festival

Ah, I can't wait to boycott this. Or not. It's all in WotC and Hasbro's little greedy corporate hands.

Brian Lewis, original legal drafter of the OGL, speaks out

That would be very good for the hobby, indeed. In other news, at this point I believe we have enough clues to predict that Paizo will NOT be signing a custom agreement with WotC. Far from it!

Brian Lewis, original legal drafter of the OGL, speaks out

It also means he's not exactly an impartial third party in this dispute. Just something to keep in mind. I really hope the major 3pp manage to create a strong front against WotC's abuse.

OGL: What Are The Publishers Saying [UPDATED]

Actually, if you read between the lines a little bit, it is pretty major. He said that Pathfinder will go on, and Paizo won't give up their core values, open gaming being one, which could mean they are ready to take on WotC if they don't back down on this OGL revocation nonsense.

OGL: What Are The Publishers Saying [UPDATED]

Having contingency plans and multiple potential avenues of attack and defense is never a bad idea. US citizens often forget there are different legislations and court systems out there, some of which aren't as disproportionally favorable to ultra rich corps as their own.

OGL: What Are The Publishers Saying [UPDATED]

Hopefully nobody makes the mistake of signing the new “””Open””” Game License. Making a lot of noise and defending the 1.0 OGL’s non-revokability seems like the best strategy right now. However, if I was a 3pp I’d also consider moving my company in the EU or opening a new company there. EU laws...

Hello, I am lawyer with a PSA: almost everyone is wrong about the OGL and SRD. Clearing up confusion.

It some 3pp decided to band together and produce a D&D "clone" game, it would probably be good idea to do that as a EU based brand new company, right? It should make waging lawfare for WotC more difficult.

New OGL - what would be acceptable? (+)

I'd say that really depends on how high the royalties are, and whether they are based on revenue or profit. I believe the concept of royalties itself wouldn't be a dealbreaker for the new OGL. The dealbreakers are the ability for WotC to change terms at will, the ability for them to swipe your...

New OGL - what would be acceptable? (+)

I'm not saying your argument is completely invalid, but the Steam comparison might be flawed. When a 3d party store sells, say, a digital copy of Crusader Kings 3, that's not Steam's IP being sold, it's Paradox Games'. There is no lost revenue for Steam there. Steam offering a Steam key for that...

New OGL - what would be acceptable? (+)

I would say that "supremely and utterly selfish" is the standard I expect from a corporation, with "comically evil" being a path further down the road they often take. A corporation that allows people to make money off their properties with no royalties and no questions asked? That's above and...

New OGL - what would be acceptable? (+)

Seriously? The WotC leadership at the time wasn't just nice, it was super nice. It was stupidly nice, nice beyond the economical interest of their own company. We all owe a debt of gratitude to them, they somehow managed to steer a company into making a choice that hurt its own self interest and...

We can only hope the backlash will convince them, if their own intellect didn't already.

D&D 5E (2024) Long rests getting better but GM needs still not being considered

True enough, and some of those changes are present, to a degree, in 5e as well (short rest recharging powers, rituals). Roles might be making a sneaky comeback in 5.5 (experts, priests, mages, warriors). But I still think those changes didn't really change the way we played D&D at the table...

D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Cleric and Species playtest survey is live.

I would like 5e to have more overall balance among the classes, and have actually taken steps in that direction via home rules, but discussing that would be pretty off topic. Interestingly, I don't even allow the standard Help action (boring auto-advantage) unless you are proficient in the...

New OGL - what would be acceptable? (+)

That's exactly what I would have done in their shoes, and I can't fathom why they aren't doing that. "Hello 3rd party publishers! The OGL for OneD&D will have royalties. We will determine the exact amounts after consulting with all of you and the OGL document will state that we'll never...
