D&D 5E (2024) It goes to show you can't please everbody!

I won’t derail this thread by discussing something that has been discussed to death in the last decade. Suffice to say that no, a smattering of half baked variants in the DMG doesn’t make for a modular game. If you disagree, that’s ok.

    D&D 5E (2024) Cross-class subclasses

i would also like the have cross class subclasses, but in that case, I also believe the subclass level for everyone should be level 1, not level 3. For classed like warlocks, sorcerers and to a lesser degree clerics, it would be weird not to pick your patron/origin/domain right away. Picking...

D&D 5E (2024) It goes to show you can't please everbody!

I do agree that 5e has some broken/busted parts, places where the game's math is just flawed and tends to break. The worst offender I can think of is how the saving throw system fails the scale at higher levels, but there are plenty of smaller issues littering the game (lame rangers/sorcerers...

D&D 5E (2024) Does anyone else think that 1D&D will create a significant divide in the community?

Very well, so we disagree whether having patches and updates for 10+ year-old games is a pretty common thing (your position) or a relatively rare thing (my position). I think we can just agree to disagree on this point and move on, especially since my main point was another. My main point...

D&D 5E (2024) It goes to show you can't please everbody!

Yes. Or actual modularity, which was the original design intent for 5e.

D&D 5E (2024) Does anyone else think that 1D&D will create a significant divide in the community?

In a market that includes literal thousands of titles, am I really supposed to be impressed by half a dozen of hand picked examples?I’m not. I wouldn’t be impressed by a hundred. You forget the announced and upcoming Diablo 4 and Diablo Immortal. They kept patching Diablo 2 for a decade? That’s...

D&D 5E (2024) Does anyone else think that 1D&D will create a significant divide in the community?

If you are a big MMO enjoyer, I’m sure it is by your perspective. If you look at the mainstream market, however, you’ll find it’s all annual releases, sequel grind, remake/remaster like crazy, and egregious monetization (loot boxes, microtransactions). I’ll gladly take a new dnd edition every...

D&D 5E (2024) Does anyone else think that 1D&D will create a significant divide in the community?

Yes, I mentioned that there are some exceptions to the rule, thank you for providing an example. I’m sure we can easily provide a few more examples if we put our minds to it. Then, we’ll have to look at the literal hundreds of examples of the opposite. Besides, how many Diablo games did we get...

D&D 5E (2024) Does anyone else think that 1D&D will create a significant divide in the community?

Sure, but 5e is almost 10 years old. How many games are continually freely updated and patched for 10 years straight? There are some, but they are the exception rather than the rule. Eventually, you want to churn out a full sequel and start making money all over again. Could be. I'm just...

D&D 5E (2024) Does anyone else think that 1D&D will create a significant divide in the community?

Tbh, the only thing that surprises me from your anecdote is younger people getting upset/surprised about this, in a game market where annual videogame releases have been the norm for a decade or so.

D&D 5E (2024) Does anyone else think that 1D&D will create a significant divide in the community?

If we had a disagree button, this is where I would press the heck out of it.

D&D 5E (2024) Does anyone else think that 1D&D will create a significant divide in the community?

No disagreements on my part, then. You can indeed have superbly designed games that just don’t appeal to the right audience, or to a vast enough audience. On the contrary, you can have crappily designed games with amazing general appeal, carried by smart marketing. The video game market offers a...

D&D 5E (2024) Does anyone else think that 1D&D will create a significant divide in the community?

Game designing and marketing are two different skills and fields, though. Making a commercially successful product involves both, but they are not the same thing.

D&D 5E (2024) Fighting Styles Are Not Worth a Whole Feat

I agree with your design intent.

    D&D 5E (2024) Return to the 3 saves for 1D&D?

I still think you’re losing the bigger picture by over focusing on specific examples and anecdotes - but I’ll ask a question. From your Rise of the Drow playtest report, I gathered that you were a player, not the DM. Have you ever DMed high level 5e? Do you Dm at all?

    D&D 5E (2024) A change for Archery Fighting style.

Yes, all fighting styles (except archery) are bad compared to feats, but I think that's fully intentional. If we want fighting styles to somewhat compete with feats, then we should heavily modify all of them.

    D&D 5E (2024) A change for Archery Fighting style.

I agree that archery style is far too strong for a combat style, but +prof to damage would also be an outlier at medium and high levels. If you want archery style to be a damage bonus, duelist style (a fixed +2 damage) should be what we compare it to.

D&D 5E (2024) Fighting Styles Are Not Worth a Whole Feat

I also dislike trap options and Ivory Tower design, but if a feat is marked as a 1st level feat, I would expect it to be less powerful than a 4th level feat, just like epic boons (20th level feats) seem to be stronger than 4th level feats. The numbers should communicate the intent well enough.

    D&D 5E (2024) Return to the 3 saves for 1D&D?

I think you're getting yourself hanged on very specific examples (especially the Psychic Scream one for some reason? I think the example involving multitudes of low CR enemies using low level control spell was way more interesting, I've dismantled optimized and cocky parties with easy encounters...
