D&D 5E (2014) Pros and Cons of Kits, Prestige classes and Paragon paths. How 5e should handle it?

I liked 3es Prestige classes, but I think they need to actually be prestige classes, not just "secondary" classes, and not strictly better than the base class in almost every single way. For example, Radiant Servant of Pelor is better in every single way EXCEPT, HPs. (d6 instead of d8). You...

Blog: Sneak Attack Vs. Backstab 3/28/12

You are correct, I had the 20d6 mentioned in the original article in my head when I was doing the mental math of 5 attacks, etc  Substitute 50d6+ easily where it says 100d6. That being said, I can probably get it to 72d6 without too much trouble, including weapon damage, sans crits :D...

Blog: Sneak Attack Vs. Backstab 3/28/12

A rogue in 3x could easily hit 100d6 (or more) in a full round before weapon damage and crits... IF, the creature wasn't immune to it, IF the creature wasn't immune to flanking or had other abilities that prevented him from losing his dex bonus AND, IF the rogue took 2 weapon fighting, and...

Fireball stopped at 10d6, same as backstab.

It feels right, because it was exactly like this in 3e. I never had anyone get to level 20 as a Rogue (usually multi-class or never reach that level), so it's never actually happened. I think the 6d6 I have right now on my Rogue/Spell Thief is about my max ever.

Can't say I'm a fan. I see nothing wrong with the way sneak attack was in 3E and I'd much prefer that version to this.

D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

I guess I don't see a big difference between "numerous powers that do similar things" and one ability that can be used multiple times with a penalty. To me, having "numerous powers that do similar things" sounds both boring and a waste of a lot of book space. I would rather have a few...

D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

To be fair, I wouldn't consider feeding your hand to a dragon even as a daily. Without regeneration, it's a 2 use power tops.

    Rule-of-Three: 03-27-12

3.5 had the duskblade, which was a nice start. It was not, however, in any way shape or form a stand in for the Wizard, which is a requirement (in my opinion) for a multiclass fighter/mage. Not in power, mind you, but in wizardly things, especially low level The duskblade was more of a...

    Rule-of-Three: 03-27-12

I'm perfectly fine with the planning of feats out to 20, but I do agree that PRESTIGE classes should be limited. I think if they correct the issues with the base classes front loading and making "dips" enticing, that you won't see the 4 base class multiclass characters as much UNLESS, it fits a...

    L&L - Hope for a Hex Grid! March 27, 2012

I played a lot of minis before they botched up the rules for that, 1-2-1 is like second nature now.

    D&D 5E (2014) What 5E needs is a hundred classes

Why would you suggest that assassin be a base class? Isn't the default assumption of D&D (in general) that PCs are non-evil? Seems odd to have an evil only class as one of the very few base classes, while removing some iconic ones like Paladin and Ranger.

    Multiclassing: What I'm hoping for

I prefer 3e's system of wide open multiclassing. It can be fixed by spreading out abilities instead of making those 1 and 2 level dips so attractive. That is the main problem with that system. 2 levels of fighter for 2 BAB, 2 d10 hd and 2 bonus feats, 2-5 MAX levels of Paladin unless you...

L&L: These are not the rules you're looking for

CR isn't perfect, that is for sure. Substitute CR6 Chraal and that level 7 party is in more trouble than they are from the Hill Giant. That is on the designers, in that instance though and MMIII and IV (fastest way to have the players groan...pull out MMIII or IV for an encounter)

D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

I strive for fun all the time too. However not everything can be AWESOME all the time, I fully agree. Your first +2 sword, AWESOME. Your second? Cool 13th? Oh, great, more swords to sell. If all I care about is an AWESOME story, I don't need to use dice or D&D, I can just have story time...

Weapons: What Are They Good For?

Spears are awesome, in that they give reach (in 3.5). Spears are bad, in that they require 2 hands (in 3.5) Because the spear was such an under utilized weapon, our house rule is to allow them with light shields. Now someone actually picks one up once in a while (my current cleric of Saranrae...

    Iconic D&D Clerics (Blog)

Pre-3x, I would agree, Clerics were unpopular. However we have managed to have at least 1 if not more Healer types as CHOSEN, rather than "welll I guess I play the healer" in every campaign. Between Spirit Shaman, Favored Souls, Clerics and Druids, some sort of healer is always one of the...

    Paladins Should Not Cast Spells

My main problem with the dragon as a spellcaster ALWAYS, was that in general, the majority of his spells sucked compared to what he could do with his other abilities. I do think SOME dragons (Golds, Silvers, maybe Greens) should be spell casters by nature, but others are either too firmly...

    Paladins Should Not Cast Spells

I'm ok with Paladins casting spells. They should be very distinct though, not just cleric/priest light. I will continue to beat the drum for the Paladin to be the heavily armorered healer/buffer, while the cleric turns into a light armored divine mage type.
