    D&D 5E (2014) [Ro3 4/24/2012] The Action Economy of D&D Next

"has realized"? Shoehorned? You do realize swift actions were in 3.5 long before 4e was even considered right? (Miniatures Handbook 2003) Swift spells were basically the same as Quicken spell (called a free action, but limited to one per round, just like what would become Swift)

    D&D 5E (2014) [Ro3 4/24/2012] The Action Economy of D&D Next

I don't disagree there either. I would rather they last a set amount such as 1 or 10 minutes or From X time until the beginning of an initiative sequence (not a single person's initiative)

    D&D 5E (2014) [Ro3 4/24/2012] The Action Economy of D&D Next

God, please don't let group initiative be the default. I find it much more immersive if people have to work together when they don't all just get to set themselves up exactly how they want and pull it off. Monsters interupting their carefully laid plans with moving or a spell makes it feel...

    Every Edition is a Failure

I assume that people are mad that people are talking bad about their preferred edition and it has wounded them deeply.

Making Vancian Casting More "Linear" and Less "Quadratic"

Cantrips (3e style) at will would be fine with me. Bump Ray of Frost to 1d6 + Int ranged to hit Make Acid Splash 1d4 + Int ranged touch, no SR (thes are just numbers based on 3e, we don't know what damage will look like in 5e) Something like that would be fine with me, as it would also give...

    Please no monster class levels

Can PC's join this cult and get the power? If not, no, I wouldn't allow it in my world. If the players have the chance to do so, it's less of an issue. I really don't care how you guys want to justify it or how you guys play it in your campaign. 3e did the best job, in my opinion, of making...

    Please no monster class levels

Again, those are RACIAL abilities. I don't expect PCs to have access to RACIAL abilities unless they are that race. What I am discussing is more akin to allowing players to be Stirges, but saying they can't fly. If an Orc is a fighter, there is nothing it should be able to do that a fighter...

Blog: Background and Themes a closer look.

That is something I could see and would have no problem with at all. You take a focused theme, you get some minor benefits. As long as they are available to anyone (meeting the requirements), it would be a good solution to offset the custom vs preset background/theme, especially at low levels.

    Blog: Paladin vs. Cleric, fight!

if he's lawful neutral, he should crusade against Chaos. He is "neutral" on the good-evil scale. In theory, he wouldn't care about the good-evil divide.

There should be no bonus given to people who won't take the time to build their character. People who take the time to be invested in the system should be slightly rewarded for their due diligence.

Blog: Background and Themes a closer look.

I'm cautiously optimistic based on my first reading. My concern would be what appears to be the death of the skill monkey. If you only get a few skills based on your background, then feats with your "theme"...Not sure how I feel about that. I do love playing a good skillmonkey

The game is better? That is a matter of opinion.

Why is the Vancian system still so popular?

Real optimizers know CLW wands are a trap. Wands of Lesser Vigor are better. Magic item shops are a good idea, we've had them since 1e. Assuming that everything was available was the problem. We've always rolled X magic items (dependent on city size) randomly to determine what a shop has...

Making Vancian Casting More "Linear" and Less "Quadratic"

You CAN use those spells, but again, they don't consume the resources that a combat does. Duke's and other royalty also don't like being charmed or magically influenced. Don't even get me started on the legal ramifications of wanton charm person abuse :) I also did qualify it this time with a...

    Please no monster class levels

It's not relevant, I'm just pointing out that BAB means BASE attack bonus. While the final number is the same, it's not BAB you are talking about. Some people don't/haven't played 3e, so I was merely correcting your term usage. The Orc, with his +1 str advantage has an attack bonus the same as...

    Please no monster class levels

My players never hound me, because I use the rules of the gaming system and make everything transparent. "Because I said so" is a copout.

    Please no monster class levels

Attack Bonus =/= BAB My problem isn't that 20th level fighters DON'T have whirlwind or <insert power here> it's the 3rd level fighter who CAN'T have it, while an orc of the same level CAN by DM fiat. Personally, if I can't do it right, I'll do something else. The rules exist. Use them

Making Vancian Casting More "Linear" and Less "Quadratic"

Start casting a spell when you are meeting the Duke, see what happens (it involves a lot of crossbow bolts and a flamestrike from his loyal cleric). I don't cast spells to buy goods, I don't cast them meeting royalty or the rich (it's both rude and they tend not to wait and see what it is...

Did we get our first look at the new Forgotten Realms...?

The art style reminds me a lot of the Faiths and Pantheons or one of the Specialty priest books. I forget which, but it had drawings of a priest/priestess from each of the major FR gods and goddesses. I loved that book for the art.

Making Vancian Casting More "Linear" and Less "Quadratic"

Fewer restrictions maybe, but look around the threads here and elsewhere. There is a lot of evidence that the 15 minute adventuring day didn't go away in 4th (some people claim it's more prevalent). It's not a faulty assumption, it's based off players and DMs relating their play experience...
