    Please no monster class levels

I disagree completely. Internal consistency of a world is huge for many players. If it can be done by an NPC, it can be done by a PC, otherwise it DOES became a DM vs Players situation. Because I said so, is not how I DM, nor would I play in a game where that was commonplace.

    Please no monster class levels

What can a Fighter 4 human (with a PC designation) do that a fighter 4 human (NPC designation) can't do? You won't find anything, because a level 4 fighter is a level 4 fighter. Same question with a Fighter 4 human vs a fighter 4 troll? Now, if you found something, remove it if it has to...

    Please no monster class levels

Dragons get to do things non-dragons don't. Trolls get to do things non-trolls don't. Fighters get to do things fighters don'....OH WAIT. Not how it should work. A fighter is a fighter. A wizard is a wizard. A rogue is a rogue. They can be built differently, but if a 4th level troll wizard...

    Please no monster class levels

And in a consistent world, anything a monster of NPC can do, so can the players. Ergo, no need for any rules lawyering or cries of something being unfair. As a DM, I adjuticate a story that they can believe in. If they can't do something because it's against the rules, why can the NPCs?

Making Vancian Casting More "Linear" and Less "Quadratic"

so...just like healing surges. A "resource" to manage. When you are out of rests, you are done for the day, just like in 4e you are done when you are low on healing surges. Not interested. Ok, so if I'm playing a game that is actually heavy on role playing, and not just combat and only...

    D&D 5E (2014) A Thought about 5e Multi-classing...

So...something that could easily be fixed by removing front loading of classes OR requiring that someone take X levels of a class before switching. Just because some people did it to power their character up, doesn't mean it shouldn't exist. I would guess Conan has at least 3 classes(Barb...

Making Vancian Casting More "Linear" and Less "Quadratic"

Because that isn't the kind of game I want to play, where it's assumed you can rest and recover your spells 4 times a day. I want to play and DM a game where you plan ahead and memorize your spells, like the Vancian system always has been.

Making Vancian Casting More "Linear" and Less "Quadratic"

As long as it comes in a 4e module, no I won't. I just won't purchase it. I will have a problem if it's assumed in core.

    Please no monster class levels

Know how I get a dragon breath weapon or troll regenerate? Play a troll or dragon. Those are races, not classes that are open to everyone. Dragon's don't get an extra feat at first level either, because they aren't human. However, if I am a winged PC, Wingover should be available to me, just...

Making Vancian Casting More "Linear" and Less "Quadratic"

I've never had a problem with the 15 minute workday, either as a player or DM, and I've been playing for almost 30 years. As such, I don't need a solution for it. Currently in one campaign, we are on level 3 (30+ rooms) of a dungeon after 2 rests. Had we rested after each battle (as...

Sounds like healing surges for wizards. No thanks.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e's big problem - Balancing "Being D&D" versus "Being Not D&D"

Right...people who don't like 4e, because it doesn't "feel" like D&D, say it doesn't feel like D&D. Makes sense to me. "Well, the only people who say they don't like nachos are the same people who indeed don't like nachos. That's quite a self-reinforcing argument"

Making Vancian Casting More "Linear" and Less "Quadratic"

No, I wouldn't be ok with 9 spells. Would you be ok with a fighter who can only swing his sword 9 times in a day? If you change spells so that they don't scale with level, it effectively makes low level spells less effective. Magic Missle in a 1st level slot - 1d4+1 Is that going to break...

Making Vancian Casting More "Linear" and Less "Quadratic"

Which is just like memorizing. Hey, a battle is looming, better memorize attack spells. Ok, battle is over, there is a door, better memorize knock now instead. Well, we got through that room, better memorize more attack spells instead. That sounds to me more like having everything you want to...

Making Vancian Casting More "Linear" and Less "Quadratic"

How is resting, memorizing, finishing the casting and then forgetting (which is what happened in 1,2 and 3) different than fire and forget? It's not. I also don't care for at-will either. I'll accept it, but it's not ideal. Vancian style magic involves resource management. If you can just...

Making Vancian Casting More "Linear" and Less "Quadratic"

What is wrong with it, is that it isn't Vancian style magic then. You memorize it once per day, fire and forget it, as a wizard. Rememorizing spells wasn't part of that.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e's big problem - Balancing "Being D&D" versus "Being Not D&D"

I know you are wrong. Evidence? 4e. The people who play it, swear it is fun. It's being replaced sooner than normal because it's not selling. It split the player base immensely. What is a HUGE complaint? "It doesn't FEEL like D&D" I would rather have a good game that feels like D&D than...

    Please no monster class levels

Because not all "classic" D&D is equal. In 3rd edition (which he specifically referenced), there are feats, skills (hide, move silently, spot, listen, etc etc) class abilities and more, that all have to be taken into account if you are actually adding class levels. A thief goblin who you only...

    Munsterus Musing- D&D blog 18/04

I would rather have fewer, but fully fleshed out, monster entries in a book (ecology, knowledge check info, fluff in general) than more monsters in the book yet presented as dry numbers.

    Please no monster class levels

No. I like monsters with class levels. Then again, it's not required either. There are 5 books of monsters sans levels.
