Do you buy new versions of TTRPG games when you haven't had time to play the older version sitting on your shelf?

I find that Meetup's usefulness is highly dependent on location. In the Twin Cities, it was great. I built my current group through Meetup and while there has been a few who have come and gone, I've been running campaigns for the core 4 for over a decade now. But I didn't create a meetup for...

Project Sigil 90% Of D&D’s Project Sigil Team Laid Off

Yeah, my two favorite VTTs and the ones I use to run games are Foundry and Maps. If I want to dive in a configure and customize and have all the bells and whistles, Foundry is there to sink many a weekend into. If I just need a simple, solid battlemap that makes it easy to drop token and linked...

Project Sigil 90% Of D&D’s Project Sigil Team Laid Off

I'm a bit bummed out. I was hoping for a VTT developed bespoke for D&D, with solid support for its mechanics and smoothly linked to DDB. I like maps but I think it works because it is simple and I hope they don't over develop it. Really didn't care much for or against it being 3D. I'm not...

    Non-magical fantasy subways

That opens up some neat options. Like could you have it near an ocean, start with lava tubes, make use of tidal flows, expand with both human and fantastic animal labor. That would allow the creation of some cool new monsters that continue to live on and create a new habitat after the fall of...

    Non-magical fantasy subways

Yeah, I thought of that, but thought for the fantasy mystery feel that seemed implied that this was not in the spirit of the question. There are actual example from history where this was done. Derinkuyu had stables and very likely used animals to move goods around. Znojmo Catacombs (iin what...

Do you buy new versions of TTRPG games when you haven't had time to play the older version sitting on your shelf?

When I realized that I had games on my shelf that I bought to read, realizing I would likely never run them, but ended up never getting around to reading them, I accepted I had a problem. :-) My Kindle collection confirms this. Now I really try not to buy on impulse.

    D&D 5E (2024) Sigil Review Thread (+)

Yeah, I've never had a player lift up a piece of paper covering part of a physical battlemap, lift the cloth to peak under a set up piece of terrain, or get up to look behind my DM screen. But it is common for players to immediately move into a room after they open a door in a VTT before I have...

    D&D 5E (2024) Sigil Review Thread (+)

This is why TTRPG players need to spend some time playing with wargamer grognards. The wargame rake serves double duty as a hand slapper. It would be fun if there was a community mod for Foundry that would display one hand slapping away another when you hit the space bar to pause the battlemap.

Minis in a Starter Set? Preferences?

Dozens of 2D minis every time. 3D minis are great when you only need a few for a board game. But for a TTRPG starter set you want a good assortment of PC options and common monsters. If there will be an introductory adventure, I would focus on having enough so every monster in the adventure has...

    Non-magical fantasy subways

So gravity powered rail systems, water-powered systems, pulley and counterweight systems (w/ human-powered crank mechanisms, similar to ancient cranes), have all been mentioned in this thread. Another possibility could be wind-assisted tunnels with bellows and natural ventilation shafts used to...

D&D General Online web sites to help the DM run his game and prep

Fantasy Name Generators https://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/ Parf Edhellen https://www.elfdict.com/ * translates English words to Tolkien elvish (both Sindarin and Quenya). Good for coming up with Elven location names. Dwarrow Schollar https://thedwarrowscholar.com/ Lots of great resources...

Minis in a Starter Set? Preferences?

Nothing beats a 3D mini IMHO. But standees are still nice and allow you to put a lot more in the box. Wood standees feels pretty niche and I think you would get more bang for you buck with full color thick cardboard or flat plastic minis (like Arcknight's). I also worry that wooden minis would...

How Do You Keep Track of All Your RPG Books?

I don't and make an effort not to. My personality can make me pretty compulsive about organization and I try to resist that outside of work. I don't succeed very well with digital material as I save and folder everything in Google Drive. But I don't put too much time into that other than...

Do you buy new versions of TTRPG games when you haven't had time to play the older version sitting on your shelf?

Got back into TTRPGs in 2014. I keep seeing new editions and starter sets for games I've bought and never got around to playing. There is a weird pull to want to buy the new version, just in case I do play them. I've not succumb to this as I've gotten over my earlier impulse buying of...

TTRPG Genres You Just Can't Get Into -and- Tell Me Why I'm Wrong About X Genre I Don't Like

Are you just burned out with running supers games or is there something about them (either the typical systems or just running games for powerful PCs) that you don't enjoy as a GM? I'm in the same boat regarding romance. I might include it in a campaign I'm running with my regular group, but I...

    Gamehole Con 2025 Thread

Yeah, I was upset, but after reading the discussion on Discord, it is clear that it is not the Con organizers fault. I suppose they could have sent out an e-mail as soon as they learned about it, but I'm not sure how early the portal opened and how long it was open before the con organizers knew...

    Gamehole Con 2025 Thread

Yeah, I saw that on Discord. Usually I try to access these kinds of sites early because often the third-party entity operating them doesn't stick strictly to the schedule. Didn't this time, lesson learned.
